Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Shape of What’s Coming

They did not stop until the forest began to thin and the distant outline of the city walls came back into view, and only then did Ayan finally slow his pace, his breathing steady but heavier than before, not from exhaustion alone, but from the weight of what he had just witnessed. His mind replayed the scene over and over, the positioning of the creatures, the way they reacted, and most importantly, the way that central kobold had looked at them, not like a beast reacting to movement, but like something aware, something that had noticed them and made a decision.

"…That wasn't normal."

The thought came again, but this time it carried more certainty than before.

It wasn't just strength.

It wasn't just evolution.

It was behavior.

Ayan ran a hand lightly through his hair, his gaze lowering slightly as he continued walking, his thoughts moving faster now, connecting pieces that no longer felt separate. The earlier encounters, the unstable transformations, the different forms, and now this, a stable, commanding variant that could direct others. The pattern was becoming clearer, and that clarity was what unsettled him the most.

"They're not just changing…"

He muttered quietly.

"…They're developing."

The word felt strange even as he thought it.

Because development implied progression.

And progression implied—

Time.

Process.

Direction.

Beside him, Aelira walked in silence, her steps steady, her expression unchanged, but Ayan could feel her attention on him, not intrusive, not overwhelming, just present, as if she was observing the way his thoughts were shifting rather than the situation itself.

"You're connecting it."

Her voice came softly.

Ayan didn't look at her.

"…Yeah."

Because now it was harder to ignore.

"They started as scattered changes… different forms, unstable… but now…"

He paused, his jaw tightening slightly as the conclusion formed.

"…Now they're becoming organized."

Aelira didn't respond immediately.

And when she did, her answer was simple.

"Yes."

Again—

Too simple.

Ayan's steps slowed slightly.

Because there it was again.

That same pattern.

She wasn't figuring this out with him.

She was confirming it.

"…You already knew that."

The thought surfaced more clearly this time.

Closer to the surface.

Closer to being spoken.

But once again—

He held it back.

Because he still didn't have enough.

Because right now—

The situation in front of him mattered more.

They reached the outskirts of the city shortly after, the guards at the gate giving them only a brief glance before allowing them through, their expressions unchanged, unaware of what had just occurred beyond the walls. The contrast felt almost surreal, stepping from something that felt on the edge of collapse back into a place where everything continued as if nothing had changed.

Ayan didn't slow.

Not this time.

He moved straight toward the guild, his pace steady, his mind focused, because whatever he had seen, it wasn't something that could be ignored, not even for a moment. The guild was just as active as before, the noise filling the space, but as soon as Ayan stepped inside, that noise felt distant again, his attention locked on one thing.

The counter.

He approached without hesitation, the receptionist from earlier looking up as he reached her, her expression shifting slightly the moment she recognized him.

"You're back."

Her tone was more serious this time.

Ayan nodded.

"There's more."

That was all he needed to say.

Her expression tightened immediately.

"Explain."

And he did.

Everything.

The group.

The structure.

The central kobold.

The reaction.

The pursuit.

This time, as he spoke, people nearby began to listen again, the surrounding noise lowering slightly as fragments of his words reached them, and unlike before, there was no disbelief, no immediate doubt, only tension building quietly in the air.

When he finished, the receptionist didn't hesitate.

"Wait here."

Her voice carried urgency now.

More than before.

She moved quickly toward the back, and the moment she disappeared, the murmurs began again, louder this time, more focused, more uneasy.

"…Organized?"

"…That doesn't happen…"

"…If that's true…"

Ayan didn't react to any of it.

His thoughts remained inward, sharper now, more focused, as he stood there, waiting, but not idly. Because now, there was something else forming alongside the situation itself.

A question.

Not about the monsters.

But about her.

Beside him, Aelira stood quietly, her gaze steady, her presence unchanged even as the tension around them grew, and that contrast made it harder for Ayan to ignore.

"You're not surprised."

This time—

He said it.

Out loud.

Not loud enough for others to hear.

But clear enough between them.

Aelira turned her head slightly, her silver eyes meeting his, her expression calm as always.

"I told you."

Her voice was soft.

"This world is unstable."

Ayan held her gaze for a moment longer.

"That's not an answer."

The words came out before he could stop them.

Not harsh.

But direct.

A brief silence followed, and for the first time, Aelira didn't respond immediately. Her gaze lingered on him, not avoiding, not deflecting, but measuring, as if considering how much to say and how much to hold back.

Then—

"You don't need to know everything yet."

The same line.

Different moment.

But now—

It felt heavier.

Ayan's expression tightened slightly.

"…Yet."

He repeated the word quietly.

Because that meant—

There would be a time.

A time when he would know.

But not now.

Ayan looked away.

Because pushing further here wouldn't change anything.

Because whatever she was hiding—

She had already decided not to say.

The door behind the counter opened again, and the guild manager stepped out once more, his presence immediately drawing attention as the murmurs died down almost instantly. His gaze locked onto Ayan again, sharper this time, more focused, as he approached.

"You saw something else."

It wasn't a question.

Ayan nodded.

"…They're organizing."

The man's expression didn't change.

But his eyes—

Did.

"Saw a leader."

Ayan nodded again.

The silence that followed carried more weight than anything spoken.

Because this—

Confirmed it.

The man exhaled slowly, his posture straightening slightly as he spoke.

"This changes things."

And Ayan knew—

Exactly what that meant.

Because now—

This wasn't just a problem.

It was the beginning of something far worse.
