CHAPTER 24 – "She Doesn't Compete"

Zara Valtoria doesn't chase people.

She doesn't argue.

And she definitely doesn't fight over a man.

She replaced. She outclassed.

She ended things—quietly.

"Julie," Zara said, stepping into her dressing room, already halfway into a sleek champagne-colored silk gown.

Julie followed behind her with a tablet.

"Elena Marquez has been invited to the Valtieri charity gala tonight," she said carefully.

Zara paused.

Just for a second.

"Invited?" she repeated.

Julie nodded.

"By Mrs. Isabella Valtieri."

Of course.

Zara didn't look annoyed.

Didn't look threatened.

If anything—

She looked… interested.

"Good," she said simply.

Julie blinked.

"…Good?"

Zara turned, adjusting her earrings in the mirror.

"Yes," she said calmly.

"Now I don't have to look for her."

......

The Valtieri charity gala was exactly what one would expect.

Grand.

Polished.

Filled with people who measured power in silence and wealth in presence.

Zara arrived late.

Not by accident.

By design.

Her Rolls-Royce Boat Tail pulled up slowly, drawing attention without needing to demand it.

When she stepped out—

The room shifted.

Her gown flowed like liquid gold, fitted perfectly to her body, elegant but bold enough to remind everyone exactly who she was.

Diamonds rested against her skin like they belonged there.

Julie stayed just a step behind her.

Silent. Efficient.

"Where is she?" Zara asked under her breath.

Julie didn't need clarification.

"Near the west wing. With Mrs. Valtieri."

Zara nodded once.

Then she walked in.

Lucien Valtieri noticed her immediately.

Of course he did.

His conversation paused mid-sentence.

His attention shifting fully.

Ken leaned slightly toward him.

"She's early tonight," he murmured.

Lucien didn't respond.

Because Zara didn't look like she came to attend.

She looked like she came to finish something.

......

Elena Marquez was smiling when Zara approached.

Soft. Elegant. composed.

Isabella stood beside her, clearly dissatisfied.

Then Zara stopped in front of them.

Silence fell—not completely, but enough.

"Elena," Zara said calmly.

Elena's smile didn't drop.

"Zara."

Polite.

Measured.

Zara's gaze moved briefly to Isabella.

Then back.

"I heard you've been busy," Zara said.

Elena's expression stayed composed.

"I don't hide my presence."

Zara nodded faintly.

"That's good," she said.

"Because I don't hide my decisions."

A pause.

Then Zara reached into her clutch.

Julie already knew what was coming.

She stepped forward slightly, placing a slim document into Zara's hand.

Zara held it out—

Not to Elena.

To Isabella.

"What is this?" Isabella asked, frowning slightly.

"Guest list," Zara replied.

Silence.

"For the wedding."

That landed.

Elena's smile faltered—just slightly.

Zara continued, her voice calm, almost conversational.

"I personally reviewed every name," she said.

A pause.

"And I removed anything unnecessary."

Isabella's eyes sharpened.

Elena didn't speak.

But she understood.

Perfectly.

Zara's gaze finally rested on her.

"You're not on it," she said simply.

No insult.No raised voice.No drama.

Just truth.

The kind that stung more.

Silence stretched.

Elena's composure cracked—just slightly.

"Lucien should decide that," she said quietly.

Zara smiled.

Soft.

Dangerous.

"He already did," she replied.

And just like that—

It was over.

Zara didn't wait for a reaction.

Didn't stay for a response.

She turned and walked away.

Lucien was already watching her.

When she reached him, he didn't ask.

Didn't question.

"You handled it," he said.

Zara picked up a glass of champagne from a passing tray.

"I don't repeat myself," she replied.

Lucien's lips curved slightly.

"No," he said."You don't."

And keep your dog in chain, I won't be nice next time.

........

The days that followed moved fast.

Designers came and went.

Venues were built from scratch.

Details adjusted repeatedly—until Zara approved.

Nothing was rushed.Nothing was average.

Julie managed Zara's side with precision.

Ken handled Lucien's with equal control.

And somewhere between decisions and deadlines—

The tension between Zara and Lucien changed.

Less resistance.

More… understanding. Not soft.Never soft. But steady.
