Chapter 12 - Chapter 11: A Blade Beneath Calm Skies

⋆﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏⋆

Morning arrived gently over the vast grounds of the imperial palace.

Sunlight filtered through layers of carved wooden screens and curved rooftops, spilling into the imperial gardens in soft waves of gold.

The air was fresh, touched by the faint fragrance of blooming flowers and damp earth, as if the world had momentarily forgotten the quiet tensions that lived within the palace walls.

In this rare pocket of peace, Shen Yunxi walked slowly along a stone pathway lined with flowering trees.

At his side, as always, was Mei Lian.

The path curved gently beside a koi pond, its surface shimmering beneath the morning light.

Petals floated across the water like drifting silk, and the soft hum of distant activity echoed faintly through the gardens.

It was quiet.

Peaceful.

For Shen, moments like this felt almost unreal.

Mei, however, had no intention of letting the silence remain.

"So," she began, clasping her hands behind her back as she walked slightly ahead of him, "you know what I heard this morning?"

Shen glanced at her, his expression calm but curious.

Mei grinned.

"Another rumor."

Of course.

Shen tilted his head slightly, encouraging her to continue.

Mei leaned closer, lowering her voice as if the flowers themselves might be listening.

"One of the kitchen maids said that the Empress has been in a particularly bad mood lately."

At the mention of the Empress, Shen's gaze lowered slightly.

He had heard the title many times.

Yet he had never met her.

Still... something about the way servants spoke of her always carried a certain tension.

Mei continued, clearly enjoying herself.

"They say she rarely leaves her palace unless necessary," she said. "But when she does... even the highest-ranking consorts are careful around her."

Shen absorbed the information quietly.

Mei straightened and waved her hand.

"And that's not all."

She turned toward him, walking backward now with a playful expression.

"I also heard that the Royal Consort has been unusually quiet since yesterday."

Shen paused slightly.

He knew why.

The memory of the pavilion... the spilled tea... and the quiet but heavy presence of Princess Xiao Lihua confronting the concubines still lingered in his mind.

Mei smirked.

"I think the princess scared them."

Shen almost smiled.

Almost.

They continued walking along the garden path, the gentle crunch of gravel beneath their feet blending with the soft rustle of leaves overhead.

For a while, nothing interrupted the calm.

Until-

The sound of approaching footsteps broke through the quiet.

Measured.

Steady.

Not hurried, but purposeful.

Mei stopped mid-sentence.

Her expression shifted immediately.

Shen followed her gaze.

Walking along the path ahead of them was a figure dressed in dark armor, the polished surface catching faint glimmers of sunlight.

He moved with controlled precision, each step grounded and deliberate.

There was no mistaking him.

This was not a servant.

Nor a court official.

This was someone who carried authority.

Mei immediately lowered her head.

"General," she whispered.

Shen's attention sharpened.

As the figure drew closer, Shen was able to see him clearly for the first time.

This was General Liang Fengxiao.

Shen had heard of him before.

The emperor's most trusted general.

A man who commanded armies.

But seeing him in person was different.

Liang Fengxiao was younger than Shen had expected.

Perhaps in his late twenties.

His frame was tall and well-built, his posture straight with the natural discipline of someone who had spent years in training and battle.

His armor was not overly ornate, yet it fit him perfectly, emphasizing the strength of his shoulders and the firmness of his stance.

His face was sharp and composed, his features defined but not harsh.

There was a quiet intensity in his eyes-dark, observant, and steady, as if nothing escaped his notice.

Yet beneath that intensity, there was something else.

Control.

Restraint.

The kind of calm that only came from experience.

He did not look like a man who spoke unnecessarily.

But neither did he seem cruel.

He stopped a respectful distance away.

His gaze settled briefly on Shen.

Recognition flickered across his eyes.

"You must be Concubine Shen."

His voice was deep and even.

Shen lowered his head in a respectful greeting.

Mei followed quickly.

"Greetings, General Liang."

Liang Fengxiao inclined his head slightly.

"No need for formalities."

His attention returned to Shen.

"I have heard of you."

Shen remained still.

There was no hostility in the general's tone.

But there was a certain weight behind his words.

"I trust you are adjusting to the palace."

Shen gave a small nod.

The movement was subtle, but clear.

Liang Fengxiao studied him for a moment.

His gaze drifted briefly to Shen's hands.

The bandages were still faintly visible beneath his sleeves.

"...I see."

The general did not ask directly.

But it was clear he had already heard.

Mei shifted slightly, glancing between the two men.

"The garden is peaceful this morning," she said quickly, as if trying to ease the atmosphere.

Liang Fengxiao gave a faint nod.

"It is."

He looked around briefly, his eyes scanning the surroundings with practiced awareness.

"I was conducting a patrol."

Mei blinked.

"In the garden?"

"The inner palace is not exempt from vigilance."

His answer was simple.

But it carried meaning.

The palace was beautiful.

But it was not safe.

His gaze returned to Shen.

"Concubine Shen," he said calmly, "there is something you should be aware of."

Mei straightened slightly.

Shen lifted his gaze.

The general's tone remained steady.

But there was a subtle seriousness beneath it now.

"The inner palace is... complicated."

That word again.

Complicated.

Shen had begun to understand what it truly meant.

Liang Fengxiao continued.

"You are in a position that draws attention."

Shen remained silent.

"You are the emperor's first male concubine."

The words were not harsh.

But they were direct.

"There are those who will see you as a threat."

Mei frowned slightly.

"That's not fair," she muttered under her breath.

The general did not disagree.

But neither did he deny it.

"Fairness is rarely a factor in the palace."

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"Especially among the concubines."

Shen felt a faint tightening in his chest.

The memory of the tea incident surfaced again.

Liang Fengxiao noticed the subtle shift in his expression.

His voice softened-only slightly.

"I have heard about what happened yesterday."

Mei looked up quickly.

"You have?"

"The palace has many ears."

That much was true.

The general paused.

Then he added:

"You should be careful."

His tone was not commanding.

But it carried quiet authority.

"Especially around the Royal Consort."

Shen's gaze lowered.

"And the Empress."

At the mention of the Empress, something in the air seemed to change.

Even Mei fell silent.

Shen had never met her.

But the way the general spoke her title...

It was not casual.

It was a warning.

"The Empress does not act without purpose," Liang Fengxiao said.

"And she does not tolerate disturbances within the inner palace."

Mei swallowed slightly.

"What kind of disturbances?" she asked.

The general looked at her briefly.

Then back at Shen.

"Anything that disrupts the balance of power."

The words settled heavily between them.

For Shen, the meaning was clear.

His existence alone... might already be considered a disturbance.

Liang Fengxiao straightened slightly.

"I do not say this to frighten you."

But his expression suggested otherwise.

"I say it so you understand where you stand."

Shen met his gaze for a brief moment.

And for the first time-

He realized something.

The general was not warning him out of obligation.

He was warning him because he had seen things.

Things Shen had yet to encounter.

Shen lowered his head again in silent acknowledgment.

Liang Fengxiao nodded once.

"Good."

He stepped back slightly.

"I will not keep you longer."

Mei quickly bowed again.

"Thank you, General."

Shen followed her gesture.

The general turned, his cloak shifting lightly behind him as he resumed his patrol.

Within moments, his figure disappeared beyond the curved path of the garden.

Silence returned.

But it was no longer peaceful.

Mei exhaled slowly.

"...He's scary."

Shen glanced at her.

She crossed her arms.

"But also kind," she added.

After a moment, she looked at Shen again.

"You should listen to him."

Shen lowered his gaze.

The weight of the general's words lingered in his mind.

The Royal Consort.

The Empress.

The balance of power.

The palace suddenly felt larger.

Colder.

And far more dangerous than before.

As the wind stirred the petals around them, Shen Yunxi stood quietly in the garden-

Realizing that surviving the palace would require more than silence.
