Chapter 13 - Chapter 12: A Kingdom of Shadows

⋆﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏⋆

The garden path stretched quietly beneath the late afternoon light.

Petals drifted lazily from the trees, carried by a gentle breeze that softened the world into something almost peaceful-almost safe.

But peace within the imperial palace was never real.

It only wore a gentle face.

Walking side by side along the stone path were Shen Yunxi and Mei Lian.

Behind them, the presence of General Liang Fengxiao had already faded into the distance, swallowed by the winding paths of the imperial garden.

Yet his words lingered.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

Mei was the first to break the silence.

"...He's not wrong, you know."

She walked with her hands clasped behind her back, her steps slightly quicker than Shen's as she glanced at him.

Shen kept his gaze lowered, his pace steady.

Mei sighed.

"I mean, the general isn't the type to say things without reason."

She slowed slightly, matching his steps.

"What he said about the concubines... and especially the Royal Consort and the Empress..."

Her voice lowered.

"...you should really take that seriously."

Shen's fingers shifted faintly at his sides.

The memory of the tea incident flickered in his mind.

The heat.

The sting.

The quiet laughter disguised as concern.

Mei noticed the slight movement.

Her expression softened.

"...Your hands still hurt, don't they?"

Shen paused for just a moment.

Then nodded.

It was small.

Almost unnoticeable.

But Mei saw it.

She frowned.

"I knew it."

Her voice carried a hint of frustration.

"They said it was an accident, but anyone with eyes could tell it wasn't."

She crossed her arms, her brows knitting together.

"They think just because you don't speak, you won't fight back."

Shen's gaze lowered further.

Not in agreement.

But in understanding.

Mei sighed again, this time more quietly.

"...Still."

She glanced ahead, then back at him.

"The general noticing it... that means something."

Shen looked at her.

Mei gave a small shrug.

"He didn't have to say anything."

"But he did."

Her lips curved slightly.

"And he warned you."

Shen remained silent, but something in his expression shifted.

A faint thought.

A quiet realization.

Not everyone in the palace was indifferent.

Mei nudged him lightly with her elbow.

"So... what do you think of him?"

Shen blinked, slightly surprised by the question.

Mei grinned.

"I mean, he's kind of intimidating, right? But also... not?"

She tilted her head, thinking.

"He looks like someone who's really strict... but he didn't talk down to you."

Shen's gaze drifted slightly.

He remembered the general's eyes.

Steady.

Observant.

Not cruel.

Not mocking.

Just... aware.

Shen gave a small nod.

Mei's grin widened.

"I knew it!"

She clasped her hands together.

"See? I told you, not everyone in this palace is terrible."

Her expression softened again.

"...Even if most of them are."

They continued walking.

The path curved, leading them back toward the quieter section of the palace where Shen's chambers were located.

The air grew calmer.

Stiller.

Yet beneath that calm, something unspoken lingered.

Mei slowed her steps slightly.

"...Still, you should be careful."

Her voice was softer now.

More serious.

"The general's warning... it wasn't just advice."

Shen looked at her.

Mei met his gaze.

"It sounded like he's seen things."

Her words hung in the air.

"And people like him don't say things like that unless they mean it."

Shen's fingers tightened faintly.

He understood.

More than she realized.

The palace was not simply a place of beauty.

It was a place of quiet battles.

And he had already stepped into one.

.......

Far beyond the southern empire-

Beyond its fertile lands and golden palaces-

Lied a kingdom shaped by something entirely different.

The Kingdom of Liangyu.

Where Tianzhou thrived in warmth and abundance, Liangyu stood in contrast.

Its lands were harsher.

Windswept plains stretched endlessly beneath colder skies.

Mountain ranges rose like jagged blades along its borders, forming natural defenses that had protected the kingdom for generations.

Its cities were built not for beauty-

But for strength.

Stone walls thick and unyielding.

Structures designed to endure.

To withstand.

Even its people carried that same nature.

Disciplined.

Reserved.

Sharp.

At the center of it all stood the Liangyu imperial palace.

Unlike the golden elegance of Tianzhou, this palace was constructed of dark stone and polished wood. Its architecture was precise, symmetrical-every line purposeful, every space controlled.

It did not shine.

It commanded.

And within its inner chambers, as evening settled into night, a meeting was underway.

At the head of a long table stood Emperor Liang Jianyu.

The room was lit by rows of candles, their steady flames casting shifting shadows along the walls.

Maps were spread across the table.

Documents stacked neatly beside them.

The atmosphere was heavy with quiet focus.

Liang Jianyu did not sit.

His presence alone filled the space.

His robes, dark and refined, blended with the shadows around him, making his sharp gaze all the more striking.

Around him stood his ministers and trusted officials.

None spoke unnecessarily.

They waited.

Finally, the emperor spoke.

"The southern empire grows comfortable."

His voice was calm.

Measured.

One of the ministers stepped forward.

"The alliance between Tianzhou and Guo'an strengthens their stability."

"Through marriage," another added.

Liang Jianyu's gaze shifted to the map.

His finger traced the southern borders.

"Yes."

His lips curved faintly.

"Peace is a dangerous illusion."

The ministers remained silent.

Listening.

"It breeds complacency," the emperor continued.

"And complacency... weakens vigilance."

He looked up.

His eyes sharp.

"Tell me."

"Do you believe Emperor Xiao Zhenyu is immune to such weakness?"

The room fell still.

One minister answered carefully.

"He is known to be disciplined."

"Cautious."

"Not easily swayed."

Liang Jianyu nodded slightly.

"All true."

A pause.

"But even the most disciplined ruler has something he cannot control."

His gaze darkened.

"Attachment."

The word settled heavily in the room.

Another minister spoke.

"Your Majesty refers to his sister?"

Princess Xiao Lihua.

Liang Jianyu's expression did not change.

"She is his only remaining family."

Silence followed.

The implication was clear.

"An emperor who values something," Liang Jianyu said softly, "can be made to fear losing it."

A quiet tension filled the room.

Then-

The emperor spoke again.

"Fear is more effective than force."

His fingers tapped lightly against the table.

"It clouds judgment."

"Disrupts control."

"And forces mistakes."

One of the ministers frowned slightly.

"You intend to provoke him?"

Liang Jianyu's gaze flickered.

"I intend to remind him that his empire is not untouchable."

The words were quiet.

But absolute.

He turned slightly.

"Qingren."

The name alone shifted the atmosphere.

From the shadows at the edge of the chamber-

A figure stepped forward.

This was Mo Qingren.

Silent.

Unnoticed until he chose to be seen.

Dressed in dark garments that seemed to merge with the dim light, Qingren moved with effortless control. His presence was calm-too calm.

He stopped before the emperor and bowed.

"You called."

Liang Jianyu regarded him for a moment.

Then spoke.

"I have a task for you."

Qingren lifted his gaze.

"Tianzhou."

The emperor nodded.

"The imperial palace."

The ministers remained still.

Watching.

Listening.

Liang Jianyu stepped closer.

"You will enter unnoticed."

"You will not kill."

The words were deliberate.

Clear.

Qingren did not question.

But he waited.

"There is someone I want you to approach."

A pause.

"The princess."

Princess Xiao Lihua.

The room seemed to grow colder.

"You will not harm her."

Another pause.

"But you will make it known that you could."

The meaning settled.

Heavy.

"You will leave fear behind."

Liang Jianyu's gaze sharpened.

"For her."

"For the emperor."

"And for the entire palace."

Silence.

Absolute.

Qingren's expression did not change.

But his understanding was clear.

A message.

Not of blood-

But of vulnerability.

Liang Jianyu stepped back.

"Can you do this?"

Qingren lowered his head.

"Yes."

The emperor's lips curved faintly.

"Good."

The room remained still as the weight of the plan settled over them.

And in that silence-

The first move against Tianzhou had already begun.

Qingren bowed once more.

Deep.

Silent.

Accepting the mission.

And with that-

The night of shadows had truly begun.
