Chapter 26 - Fix things

Tphe morning sun filtered softly through the blinds, casting long lines across Aduni's apartment. She sat at the small kitchen table, a cup of tea steaming in her hands, eyes fixed on the phone. Tade had texted her

"Can we meet? I need to explain. I want to fix this."

Aduni tilted her head, lips pressed together. Fix this… or convince me it's nothing?

When Tade arrived, he was visibly tense, but careful. His usual confident posture was tempered by uncertainty. He knocked softly before entering, giving her a small, respectful nod.

"Morning," he said, voice calm but with an undercurrent of anxiety.

Aduni didn't rise immediately. She sipped her tea, eyes locked on him. "Morning. You wanted to explain?"

He took a seat across from her, hands folded on his knees. "Yes. Look… I need you to know that Grace… she's in my past. That's it. I didn't mean to make you doubt me, and I realize now how my actions might have done that."

Aduni set her cup down slowly, letting the pause stretch. "Past or not, Tade, actions matter more than words. I gave you the benefit of the doubt, but benefits are not infinite. Do you understand?"

Tade nodded, swallowing. "I understand. I don't want to lose you, Aduni. I want to prove that what we have… is real. That you can trust me fully."

Aduni leaned forward slightly, a calm sharpness in her gaze. "Then prove it. Not with speeches, not with apologies. Actions. Consistency. Let me see that you choose me, every single day."

Tade's jaw tightened, and he reached across, brushing her hand lightly. "I will. I promise. I've waited this long… I can wait longer. But I want you to know, I'm here, and it's you I care about. No one else. Not Grace, not anyone. You."

Aduni's eyes softened just slightly but her lips held that teasing edge. "Words are cheap, Tade. Actions are priceless. Show me the difference."

For the first time, Tade realized how serious she was, her patience wasn't weakness; it was strategy. And he had been careless. But now, every fiber of his being was focused on proving himself worthy of her trust.

Aduni leaned back, a faint smirk forming. "You have work to do, Tade. Don't disappoint me."

He smiled, a mixture of relief and determination. "I won't. I swear. I'll do everything I can to earn your trust, and keep it."

Aduni tilted her head, observing him. Let's see… she thought, if he really wants this, he'll show it. Not words. Actions.

The morning passed slowly, quietly, but the air between them was charged. A subtle shift had occurred the tentative first steps of a relationship tested by past shadows, now moving toward honesty, patience, and something real.

Outside, the world carried on, unaware that two hearts were carefully navigating trust, loyalty, and the fragile beginnings of love that could withstand storms or crumble under carelessness.
