Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: A Dangerous Feeling

The moment Elena stepped back into the house

She felt it.

That invisible weight pressing down on her again.

The air inside was different.

Heavy.

Cold.

Unwelcoming.

Just hours ago, she had been outside, breathing freely, talking to someone who looked at her like she actually existed.

Now

It was gone.

"Elena."

Her name stopped her mid-step.

She didn't need to turn to know who it was.

Adrian.

Still, she faced him.

Slowly.

Calmly.

He stood at the far end of the hallway, one hand in his pocket, his expression unreadable as always.

But his eyes

His eyes were different.

Sharp.

Focused.

On her.

"You went out."

It wasn't a question.

Elena nodded. "Yes."

Silence followed.

Adrian took a few steps closer.

Each one slow.

Measured.

"You didn't inform anyone."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Elena tilted her head slightly.

"I didn't think I needed permission."

That made him pause.

Just for a second.

Then his gaze darkened.

"You're my wife."

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Possessive.

Elena let out a soft breath.

"And you made it very clear what that means."

A flicker of something crossed his face.

Irritation?

"Don't twist my words."

"I'm not," she replied calmly.

"You said this marriage means nothing."

Her voice didn't shake.

Didn't break.

"And I agreed."

The silence between them grew tighter.

Adrian stared at her.

Like he was trying to understand something that didn't make sense.

"You were with someone."

This time

It was a question.

Elena didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

His jaw tightened.

"Who is he?"

The question came out sharper than he intended.

Elena noticed.

Of course she did.

And for the first time

Something inside her shifted.

"You don't get to ask me that."

Her words were quiet.

But firm.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"I'm your husband."

"And I'm your contract," she replied.

That hit harder than expected.

For a brief moment

Adrian had no response.

Then

He stepped closer.

Close enough for her to feel the tension radiating off him.

"Don't forget where you are."

His voice dropped.

Lower.

Colder.

Elena didn't step back.

Instead

She held his gaze.

"I haven't," she said softly.

A pause.

"But maybe you have."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Something unstable.

Before he could respond

Another voice cut in.

"Adrian?"

Both of them turned.

Lillian stood at the entrance of the hallway.

Her expression was soft.

Gentle.

But her eyes

Her eyes went straight to Elena.

And lingered.

"Is everything okay?" she asked.

Adrian stepped back immediately.

The tension broke.

Just like that.

"Nothing," he said.

Nothing.

Elena almost laughed.

Lillian walked closer, her presence calm yet calculated.

"I was looking for you," she said to Adrian.

Of course she was.

Her gaze shifted to Elena again.

A small smile formed on her lips.

"Good afternoon… Elena, right?"

The way she said her name

Like it barely mattered

Didn't go unnoticed.

Elena nodded politely. "Yes."

"I've heard a lot about you."

Something about the way she said it didn't feel right.

Elena smiled faintly.

"I can't say the same."

A brief silence followed.

Adrian looked between them.

Something about the atmosphere felt… off.

"Well," Lillian continued, "we'll get to know each other better now that I'm back."

Back.

Like she had never left.

Like she still belonged.

Elena's chest tightened slightly.

But she didn't show it.

"I'm sure we will," she replied calmly.

Another pause.

Then

"I'll excuse myself."

She walked past them.

Slowly.

Gracefully.

But she could feel it.

Adrian's gaze.

Following her.

Watching her.

And for the first time

It wasn't indifferent.

Later that night

Adrian stood by the window in his study.

His mind wasn't on work.

It wasn't on his family.

It wasn't even on Lillian.

It was on her.

Elena.

The way she spoke.

The way she looked at him.

The way she didn't look at him.

It was different.

Too different.

She wasn't reacting the way he expected.

She wasn't trying to please him.

Wasn't trying to get his attention.

And for some reason

That bothered him.

A lot.

His grip tightened slightly.

Then

A thought crossed his mind.

Her smile.

The one she gave that man.

Daniel.

Something sharp twisted in his chest.

Unfamiliar.

Uncomfortable.

Dangerous.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"This is ridiculous."

But deep down

He knew it wasn't.

Because for the first time

Adrian Cole was feeling something he couldn't control.

And it had everything to do with a woman…

He never wanted.
