Sarah was completely dependent on others for even the smallest things—like eating, drinking, moving from one place to another, and even for bathing. So Kevin arranged a nurse from his own hospital and assigned her to take care of Sarah. The nurse would look after her from morning till afternoon and evening, and after that, Kevin himself would take care of her.
Every day, Kevin would wake Sarah up at 5:00 in the morning and give her therapy for the movement of her hands and legs. The first therapy was range of motion exercises. Kevin would gently move Sarah's arms and legs slowly.
The second exercise was ankle pumps. In this exercise, Kevin helped Sarah move her ankles up and down, which improved her blood circulation.
The third exercise was quadriceps sets. In this, she had to tighten her thigh muscles, hold for 5 seconds, and then relax.
As the therapy steps increased, Sarah's pain also started increasing. It felt to her as if her muscles were about to break. Tears filled her eyes during the exercise.
"Doctor, it hurts so much… I can't do this anymore," Sarah said while crying.
"Hey beautiful, how can you give up so easily?" Kevin said, holding her cheeks gently. "Look at me… do you trust me? I am here with you. As long as I'm here, nothing will happen to you."
Hearing this, even though Sarah was still in pain, something inside her ignited. Her motivation woke up. She gathered her strength and said, "Yes… I won't give up. I can do this."
Then came assisted walking. In this, Kevin supported her by holding her hands and slowly tried to help her walk.
"Now it's time for my favorite exercise, the one I do every day myself, and you won't feel much pain in this—it will feel very relaxing. Deep breathing," Kevin said.
He demonstrated it himself and then made Sarah do it as well. Sarah was learning everything very quickly. Whatever Kevin taught her, she followed like a good student, and Kevin felt happy seeing that his efforts were not going to waste.
Kevin continued giving her this therapy every day, and slowly Sarah started improving. She was able to walk a little, which made Kevin very happy.
"Wow beautiful, you are improving so fast. I am really happy," Kevin said.
After a few days, Kevin asked Sarah to try walking without any support. But Sarah was scared.
"Doctor… I am really scared," she said in a trembling voice.
"Look, even if your steps falter even a little, I am here. I won't let you fall. Trust me," Kevin said, looking into her eyes.
Something changed in Sarah at that moment. She felt a deep trust in him. Looking into his eyes, she smiled and said, "I trust you completely. You have brought me this far, and I know you won't let me fall."
Then Sarah tried to stand up from her chair without any support. She took small steps, slowly moving forward. Kevin kept cheering her, "Come on beautiful… you can do it."
Step by step, Sarah finally started walking without stumbling. Seeing this progress, Kevin was overwhelmed with happiness, as if it was his own recovery, not hers.
He suddenly hugged her tightly and said, "Beautiful, you're fine now. Look, you're standing on your own feet. You don't need anyone's support anymore. You can do your work yourself. You can go anywhere you want. I am so happy for you."
Hearing this, Sarah was filled with happiness. Tears rolled down her eyes. She didn't know whether they were tears of joy or something deeper.
She folded her hands in front of Kevin, as if thanking God, and knelt down. "Doctor, you are truly like God to me. If I can walk today, it is only because of you. I will never forget this favor in my life," she said, her voice trembling.
Her tears wouldn't stop.
Kevin immediately lifted her up from the ground, held her folded hands, and said, "Hey beautiful, what are you doing? Whatever I did for you, I did it as a friend. You are my friend, and I couldn't see you in pain. Believe me, seeing you stand on your own feet today makes me happier than anything."
Sarah hugged Kevin tightly. She didn't say anything. Tears kept flowing from her eyes. She was silent, just holding him in her arms. Kevin also held her close. Their hearts were beating fast, as if two hearts were becoming one. It felt like they were finding peace in each other's embrace.
All this was being watched from a distance by Kevin's mother, and she was very happy. She was happy to see Kevin smile after so many days, and she was happy for Eva too—that she had finally found a mother.
After some time, Sarah suddenly saw a flash of her past—a memory where she was hugging someone in the same way and expressing her feelings.
Slowly, Sarah loosened her hold and stepped back. Kevin also came back to his senses and moved away.
In his mind, Kevin thought, What is happening to me? Why do I keep getting drawn toward her again and again? Why do I lose control like this?
On the other side, Sarah also thought, What was I about to do? What is happening to me? I don't know why, but whenever he is around, I feel so comfortable. I like spending time with him. Why is this happening to me?
They both looked at each other.
Then Kevin quickly changed the topic and said, "Oh, I'm getting late for the hospital. Come, I'll drop you to your room, and then I'll get ready and leave. Till then, take care of yourself."
