I just stared at a wide-eyed Zahid, too flustered to speak. Unable to maintain eye contact with him, I lowered my gaze to the floor. It was like we were back to square one in our relationship.
Actually, it wasn’t even square one. When he and I had first met, I was struck with fear. That fear, however, derived from the uncertainty of whether or not he was going to eat me as he did in the original story, but I gradually came to trust him as more time passed. I had faith that he would protect me no matter what and that trust gradually began to solidify to a point where I assumed it could never be broken.
What happened that day at the Ronaell River, meant that all of that was in vain… Being in Zahid’s arms offered me no reassurance anymore, he was no different from the other men who had made me scared in the past. That was the harsh reality of it.
“…Can you move back a bit?”
