Things would have taken a messy turn if I had brought it up to Cheryl, but Ethan remained calm. He blinked for a second and answered quietly.
“…Let’s see what Cheryl says. Give me that.”
He swiftly took the shopping basket from my hand.
“By the way, why did you go out on your own?”
“We only arrived in this village a couple of days ago, so I thought it would be fine.”
“Fair enough… they’ve never caught up to us that quickly either.”
Ethan mumbled about how we had rented a house for no reason. There were always lots of people coming and going from the inns, so we preferred to rent empty houses with the shortest leases they could offer.
“Let’s just head back to the house for now.”
Ethan suggested, urging me to pick up the pace.
I walked with him as we chatted quietly amongst ourselves. Ethan checked the ingredients in my basket and told me about his ideas for dinner.
“What if I use the beef and eggplant in a tomato stew?”
