for Advance Chapter
That was a regular afternoon a few weeks later.
The sun spilled through the villa's floor-to-ceiling windows, casting warm spots of light on the floor.
I was sitting at the dining table, enjoying the lunch Kafka had carefully prepared; the deliciousness of the food and the satisfaction in my heart made me feel happy.
Kafka was sitting opposite me, propping her chin with one hand, her elbows on the table, her posture languid and elegant.
She didn't touch her cutlery, just quietly watched me eat with those deep, charming purple eyes, carrying a tender smile that was nearly doting.
Her gaze was so focused, as if I were the most worthy scenery in the world.
Just when I was feeling a bit embarrassed by her gaze and was about to say something, she suddenly opened her mouth gently, her voice still soft, yet carrying a trace of solemnity that couldn't be ignored:
"Dear."
I raised my head, meeting her gaze.
"I'm afraid... I have to leave for a while."
"Clatter—"
The fork in my hand fell onto the plate, making a crisp sound.
Shock and disbelief gripped my heart instantly.
Leaving again?
My wife... is leaving me again?
First Ruan Mei, for the sake of research, took away our unborn child.
Then Herta, to verify conjectures, went to find Ruan Mei for joint research, and also left.
Now, even Kafka, who gave me ultimate happiness and tolerance, is leaving me too?
Why? Is this villa destined to be left to me alone?
My complexion must have looked terrible, because the smile in Kafka's eyes subsided somewhat, adding a trace of comfort and apology.
"Don't look at me like that, my little Trailblazer." She stretched out her hand, gently covering the back of my hand on the table; her palms were warm and soft. "It's not what you think; I'm not abandoning you."
Her gaze moved down, falling on her own lower abdomen, a complex and gentle look appearing on her face, carrying a maternal radiance.
"Because... I'm pregnant." She said softly, her voice carrying a trace of imperceptible fatigue. "It's been a while. The reactions of my body have become more and more obvious recently, I'm afraid... it's reached the limit, and I need to recuperate properly."
Pregnant?!
My gaze subconsciously followed her line of sight, landing on her flat lower abdomen.
Looking closely, that originally tight and smooth lower abdomen, seemed to have a trace of soft bulge.
It wasn't obvious, but under her form-fitting casual clothes, a little change in arc could still be seen.
A strong sense of shame swept over me instantly.
I... I actually didn't notice it at all!
For these past few weeks, I indulged in endless lovemaking with her, caring only for my own pleasure and satisfaction, while completely ignoring the changes that might have occurred in her body!
She silently endured all kinds of discomfort in the early stages of pregnancy, while still forcing herself to meet all my needs, and even never refused when I made those "ludicrous" requests...
I am simply... too much of a bastard!
"I'm sorry, Kafka..." My voice was filled with remorse and self-blame. "I... I was too selfish, caring only for my own happiness, and, and I didn't notice your body..."
Unexpectedly, not only did Kafka not show any sign of blame, she instead gave me a gentle smile.
She stood up, walked to my side, leaned down, and gently left a comforting kiss on my forehead, which was burning a bit from shame.
"Fool, how could I blame you for this?" Her voice was so gentle it could drip water. "I was also very happy every moment I was with you. And, being able to conceive our child is something I have been looking forward to for a long time."
Her fingers gently stroked my cheek: "It's just that the process of nurturing life is indeed a heavier burden for me than for ordinary people. Elio also suggested that before the fetus is stable, it's best to find an absolutely safe and quiet place to nurture the fetus and avoid any accidents."
"So..." She paused, her tone carrying a trace of reluctance. "It might not be very suitable here at your place. I need to leave home temporarily for a while."
Leave home... this word made my heart sink again.
Seeming to see through my thoughts, Kafka added: "But don't worry, I won't let you be lonely for too long. And..." She winked slyly, her tone carrying a trace of mystery, "I will give you some 'compensation'."
Compensation? What compensation?
Before I could ask in detail, she had already begun to pack some simple luggage.
The movements were quick and clean, obviously planned long ago.
In the afternoon, a luxurious black car with smooth lines stopped silently at the villa's courtyard entrance.
The car windows were dark, making it impossible to see if anyone was inside.
Kafka, carrying that small suitcase, stood at the door, looking at me deeply for the last time.
"Take care of yourself, wait for me to come back." She stepped forward and gave me a powerful, love-filled hug, followed by a lingering, deeply affectionate, and sorrowful deep kiss.
Her lips were soft and warm, carrying the familiar scent and taste.
I greedily drank it in, as if wanting to engrave this feeling in my heart forever.
A long while later, our lips parted.
She looked at me one last time, her purple eyes filled with thick reluctance and love.
"Miss me," she whispered, then resolutely turned around, pulled open the car door, and sat in.
The black car started silently, slowly driving away from the villa, and finally disappeared at the end of the road.
Once again, I stood alone at the entrance of the empty villa.
Ruan Mei left, Herta left, and now Kafka has also left.
They all left me because of "children" or research related to children.
Looking at the direction Kafka left, feeling the lingering warmth on my lips, my heart was filled with mixed feelings.
There was loss, reluctance, worry for her and the child, and also a trace of... curiosity about the "compensation" she mentioned.
My life seems to always be in a constant cycle of gaining and losing.
This time, what kind of changes will it bring?
