Kai Voss woke up already thinking about quitting his job.
Not because he had another option.
But because every day at work felt like repeating the same mistake with different lighting.
He worked as a game tester for a company that built large scale virtual reality systems. His job was simple. Find bugs. Report them. Wait for nothing to change.
That morning started the same as always.
He checked his phone. He saw messages from his supervisor reminding everyone that the system had failed again overnight and no one was leaving until it was fixed.
Kai sighed and put the phone away.
Outside, the city was already loud. Traffic moved slowly. People rushed through the streets without looking at each other. It was a normal day in a place that never felt fully normal.
Kai went underground to the testing facility and started his shift.
For the first few hours, everything seemed normal. He ran tests. He recorded errors. He submitted reports that would probably be ignored.
Then the system started acting strange.
At first, it was small. A delay in response time. A visual glitch that lasted half a second too long. Someone in the room joked that the servers were just tired.
Kai did not laugh.
He had seen enough system failures to know when something was different.
The lights in the building flickered once.
Then again.
Then they did not stop flickering.
Monitors across the room filled with static lines. One of the testers stood up and asked if the power was unstable. Another person tried to restart the system manually.
Kai looked at his screen and felt something shift in his chest.
"This is not a normal crash," he said quietly.
Before anyone could respond, a sound came from above the building. It was sharp at first, then deep, like something large cracking under pressure.
The ceiling lights shut off completely.
A thin line of light appeared in the air above Kai's desk.
It was not on any screen.
It was in the air itself.
Kai stood up slowly.
"That is not part of the system," he said.
The line widened.
It became a crack.
Through it, he saw a color that did not belong in reality. A deep purple glow leaked out, faint at first, then stronger.
People in the room started to panic. Someone shouted that it was a server breach. Someone else ran toward the exit.
Kai stayed still for a moment longer than he should have.
Then the building shook.
Hard.
The crack in the air expanded again, and this time it did not look like a glitch anymore. It looked like space itself was breaking.
Outside the windows, Kai saw the sky.
And it was splitting.
Large fractures stretched across it like shattered glass. Purple light poured through those fractures into the city below.
Sirens began to sound everywhere at once.
The building shook again, stronger this time. Concrete cracked somewhere above them. People started running.
Kai finally moved.
He followed the crowd toward the emergency stairs. The structure of the building groaned as if it could no longer support itself. Lights failed one by one. Dust fell from the ceiling.
Halfway down the stairs, the building shifted.
Not just shaking.
It tilted slightly, like gravity was no longer fully stable.
Kai pushed forward, keeping his balance as best he could. People shouted. Some fell. Others kept running without helping.
When he finally reached the street, he stopped.
The city was wrong.
Cars were lifted slightly off the ground in some places and pinned down in others. Pieces of broken concrete floated in the air without falling. The sky was filled with glowing fractures that continued to spread.
It looked like reality had been damaged and was still breaking.
Kai stood still for a moment, trying to understand what he was seeing.
Then he noticed a man trapped under a large piece of metal near the road.
The man wore an expensive suit. He was bleeding heavily. He could not move.
Most people ran past him without stopping.
Kai hesitated.
He did not know why, but something about the man felt important. Not emotionally. Not logically. Just a feeling he could not ignore.
He walked over and knelt beside him.
The man looked at him through pain. "You should leave," he said weakly.
Kai looked around at the collapsing city. "I think that is not really an option anymore."
The man coughed. "They are already waking up," he said. "The Echoes are returning."
Kai frowned. "What does that mean?"
The man grabbed Kai's wrist with surprising strength. "Do not trust the System."
Kai froze.
A message appeared in his vision.
Not on a screen.
Directly in his sight.
[ECHO SYSTEM DETECTED]
Host Compatibility Found
Fractured Echo Interaction Available
Warning: Target is in terminal state
Extraction possible
Kai's breath slowed.
"This is not real," he said quietly.
The man's grip weakened. "Survive," he whispered.
Then his hand fell away.
The man stopped moving.
Kai stared at the message in front of him.
Another line appeared.
[ECHO AVAILABLE]
Name: Reginald Ashford III
Type: Cognitive Echo
Traits: Analytical reasoning, social behavior adaptation, ego preservation
Status: Ready for extraction
Extract Echo? (YES / NO)
Kai took a slow step back.
"This is impossible," he said.
But there was no one left to answer him.
The city continued collapsing around him.
Something moved in the sky through one of the cracks, but Kai could not see what it was clearly.
The system prompt stayed in front of him.
He looked at the dead man.
Then at the broken city.
Then at the message again.
After a long moment, he made a choice.
He reached out and touched the man's shoulder.
Everything changed.
Kai did not feel pain.
He felt information.
Memories that were not his own poured into his mind. Places he had never visited. Conversations he had never had. Emotions that did not belong to him.
A second awareness appeared inside his thoughts.
Calm. Structured. Observant.
It spoke without surprise.
"You should not have done that without preparation."
Kai stumbled back. "What is happening to me?"
His voice came out slightly different. More controlled. More precise.
A new message appeared.
ECHO EXTRACTION SUCCESSFUL
Active Echo Count: 1
Current Echo: Reginald Ashford III
System Note: Cognitive overlap detected
Warning: Identity stability reduced
Kai looked at his hands.
"I took his memory," he said slowly.
Inside his mind, the voice responded.
"Yes."
Kai closed his eyes for a moment.
When he opened them again, the sky was still breaking apart, and the city was still collapsing.
But something had changed.
He was no longer just running from destruction.
He was part of something he did not understand yet.
And the System was now active inside him.
