The Lower District woke to the sound of a bell. One ring. Then another. People continued with their morning routines. Children walked toward the underground school. Mechanics opened the workshop. Volunteers carried food from the community kitchen.
Kai stood outside the safehouse with a cup of hot tea. For the first time in days, he almost felt normal.
Then the bell rang a third time. The entire station froze.
Kai remembered Owen's warning. If you hear three bells, don't ignore them.
A fourth bell echoed through the tunnels. This one was loud enough to shake the steel beams overhead.
A guard ran into the station. "Hunters! They've entered the eastern tunnels!"
Panic spread through the Lower District. Parents rushed toward the school. Shopkeepers closed their stalls. Volunteers hurried to the barricades carrying shields and homemade weapons.
Kai put down his cup. "It's happening."
Lira was already moving. "We need to help evacuate the civilians."
Mira tightened the straps on her backpack. "I'll get the children to the shelters."
Kai nodded. "We meet back at the central platform."
The three separated without another word.
Kai ran toward the school. Children were crying as teachers hurried them into a nearby train car. One little girl stood alone, looking around in panic. "I can't find my brother!"
Kai knelt beside her. "What's his name?"
"Leo."
Kai scanned the crowd. A small boy was standing near the station fountain, too frightened to move. Kai rushed over and picked him up. "Your sister's looking for you."
The boy clung tightly to Kai's jacket. When they returned, the little girl threw her arms around her brother. "Thank you!"
Kai smiled. "Stay with your teacher."
The children disappeared into the shelter.
A loud explosion shook the station. Dust rained from the ceiling. The Hunters had reached the first barricade.
Kai hurried toward the eastern platform. Volunteers struggled to hold the line. Unlike the monsters Kai had fought before, the Hunters moved with discipline. Two advanced with large black shields. Another fired bursts of dark energy from behind them. The fourth stood farther back, scanning the battlefield with a strange device.
"They're working together," Kai whispered.
Reginald answered inside his mind. "They are trained."
Marcus added, "Do not underestimate them."
Kai picked up a steel pipe lying beside a damaged barricade. A familiar blue screen appeared.

Rowan shook his head. "They're searching for an Echo user. If they discover it's you, they won't stop."
Kai looked beyond the barricade. A volunteer fell after being struck by a Hunter's weapon. Another rushed forward to take his place. More civilians were still trapped behind the defensive line.
Kai's jaw tightened. "I can't stand here."
Lira reached him. "The western shelters are full. We're moving everyone to the maintenance tunnels."
Kai nodded. "I'll buy you time."
She grabbed his wrist. "Kai." He looked at her. "If you use your Echoes, don't lose yourself."
For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. Then Kai smiled. "I'll come back."
Lira wanted to believe him. She let go of his wrist.
Kai stepped toward the barricade. On the other side, the Hunters had almost broken through. One of them slowly raised its scanning device. A faint yellow light swept across the defenders. The Hunter stopped.
The first Hunter charged through the broken barricade. Kai met it head-on. The Hunter swung a black blade toward his shoulder.
Marcus spoke calmly inside Kai's mind. "Step left."
Kai moved without hesitation. The blade missed him by inches. He drove the steel pipe toward the Hunter's ribs. The Hunter twisted its body and blocked the attack with its forearm. The force of the impact sent a sharp vibration through Kai's arms.
A second Hunter rushed in from the right. Kai realized he couldn't keep up with both of them.
Then Reginald spoke. "They're coordinated. The one on the left attacks half a second after the one on the right."
Kai understood immediately. Marcus sharpened his reflexes. Reginald read the rhythm of the battle. For the first time, the two Echoes worked together.
Kai ducked beneath the first attack. He spun behind the second Hunter before it could react. The steel pipe slammed into the back of its knee. The Hunter dropped to one leg. Before it could recover, Kai struck its wrist. The black blade clattered across the platform.
Lira saw everything. She wasn't just watching Kai fight. She was watching him become someone else. His movements carried Marcus's discipline. His calm expression belonged to Reginald. It lasted only seconds. But it was enough for her to notice.
"Kai!" she shouted. "Behind you!"
Mira threw one of her modified Echo Crystals. It burst into a brilliant flash of white light. The third Hunter instinctively covered its visor.
"Now!" Mira yelled.
Kai didn't waste the opening. Marcus guided his body forward. Reginald calculated the safest angle. Kai struck the Hunter's shoulder with all his strength. The impact knocked it backward into the broken barricade.
The remaining Hunters immediately regrouped. Instead of charging again, they slowly retreated toward the tunnel entrance. They had tested the defenders. Now they were leaving.
The station fell strangely quiet. Volunteers quickly rushed to help the wounded. Parents emerged from the shelters, searching for their families.
Kai lowered the steel pipe. His hands were shaking. Not from fear. From exhaustion.

"Yes." He paused. "I know we came from there." He rubbed his forehead. "But I can't remember where it is."
Mira's smile faded. "Kai... we were there this morning."
"I know." He closed his eyes, trying to picture the path. Nothing came. It was as if that small piece of memory had simply been erased.
Lira's expression grew serious. She remembered Rowan's warning. Every time Kai pushed his Echoes too far, he would pay a price.
She gently placed a hand on his shoulder. "It's all right. I'll take you there."
Kai forced a small smile. "Thanks."
Neither of them mentioned it again. But all three understood what had happened. Kai had won the fight. And in return, he had lost a small piece of himself.
Far above the Lower District, hidden inside a collapsed office building, a Hunter scout studied a handheld scanner. The screen displayed a new reading.

The scout pressed a communication device. "This is Scout Three. We've confirmed an unidentified Echo user."
A calm voice answered. "Can you identify the target?"
"Negative. But the synchronization level is unlike any we've recorded."
There was a brief silence. Then the voice replied, "Maintain surveillance. Do not engage. The Captain will handle this personally."
The connection ended. The scout looked once more toward the underground entrance. A faint smile appeared beneath the mask. "The search is almost over."
Deep below, Kai looked toward the dark tunnel without knowing why. He had the uneasy feeling that the next time the Hunters came, they would not come merely to search. They would come prepared.
