Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Labyrinth of Hubris and a Frosty Encounter

The murmurs in the Hall of Resonance eventually died down, replaced by a tense, suffocating anxiety. Phase Two had successfully weeded out nearly seven thousand applicants. The remaining three thousand were a mix of genuine prodigies, lucky survivors, and those with enough family wealth to afford high-tier artifacts to boost their scores.

And then there was Kaiser, casually leaning against a pillar and eating an apple he had swiped from the VIP buffet table during the chaos.

Instructor Varg, the wolf-eared brute whose fur was still slightly on end from Kaiser's display, stepped up to a massive podium. He cleared his throat, glaring out at the remaining hopefuls.

"Phase Three!" Varg bellowed, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "The Practical Combat Exam. You aren't just here to show us pretty lights; you're here to prove you won't die the second a low-tier demon looks at you funny."

Behind Varg, the massive stone wall of the hall split open, revealing a swirling, violent portal of green and violet mana.

"Through this gate lies the Artificial Labyrinth—a pocket dimension controlled by the Academy. It is stocked with Grade-F to Grade-C mana beasts. Your objective is simple: Collect ten 'Crest Tokens'. These tokens are ingested by the beasts. You kill the beast, you get the token."

Varg flashed a predatory, canine grin. "However... there are only three hundred open spots in this Academy. And there are exactly three thousand tokens in the Labyrinth. Do the math. You are entirely permitted, and encouraged, to take tokens from each other. Murder is strictly prohibited and will trigger an automatic teleportation out of the arena. But anything short of lethal force? Broken bones? Humiliation? Utterly fair game. You have twenty-four hours. Enter!"

The applicants surged forward like a tidal wave.

Kaiser didn't rush. He finished his apple, tossed the core into a nearby ornate vase, and stretched his arms. [Otaku's Insight] was already analyzing the situation.

A Battle Royale with PvE elements, Kaiser thought, a familiar thrill coursing through his veins. Loot drops, PvP enabled, safe zones likely non-existent. My E-Rank core won't win a battle of attrition. Stealth and third-partying are the optimal strategies.

He stepped through the portal.

The transition was nauseating. The pristine marble of the Academy vanished, replaced instantly by the suffocating humidity of a dense, primordial jungle. The canopy above was so thick it blocked out the artificial sun, casting the forest floor into a permanent, eerie twilight.

[System Notification: Entering Hostile Territory.]

[Minimap unavailable. Tracking hostile intents...]

Kaiser immediately crouched, his boots sinking silently into the damp moss. He drew the standard-issue blunted iron shortsword he had grabbed from the armory racks outside the portal.

A bloodcurdling scream echoed through the trees to his left, followed by the concussive boom of an explosive fire spell. The PvP had already begun.

"Idiots," Kaiser muttered, applying a thin, almost invisible layer of his heavy Abyssal mana to the soles of his boots to muffle his footsteps completely. "Day One of any Battle Royale: let the try-hards thin the herd while you farm the outskirts."

For the next two hours, Kaiser moved like a ghost. He avoided the chaotic, noisy skirmishes breaking out between the noble factions. Instead, he tracked the subtle disturbances in the ambient mana to locate isolated, low-tier beasts.

A Grade-E shadow panther lunged at him from a thicket. Kaiser didn't even flinch. He channeled his mana, executed a flawless [Void Step], and materialized directly above the beast. He brought the pommel of his iron sword down on the back of its skull, augmented by a surge of heavy, dark gravity. The panther crashed to the ground, unconscious.

Kaiser casually pried its jaw open, retrieved a glowing bronze Crest Token, and moved on.

Token Count: 4/10.

"This is almost too easy," he whispered, wiping a smear of monster saliva on a giant fern.

"Think you're clever, hiding in the bushes, anomaly?"

Kaiser sighed heavily, dropping his shoulders. He slowly turned around.

Standing in a clearing behind him was Alaric, the arrogant blonde noble who had been frozen by Princess Valeria earlier. He was flanked by four other heavily armored youths. Alaric was shivering slightly, his lips still a faint shade of blue from the absolute-zero ice, but his eyes burned with humiliated fury.

"You embarrassed us back there, making the crystal glitch out," Alaric sneered, drawing his gleaming, enchanted rapier. "I don't know what kind of cheap parlor trick you used, but out here, raw power is all that matters. Hand over your tokens, peasant, and we might not break your legs."

Kaiser looked at the five of them. He then looked up at the dense canopy, praying for patience.

"Look, Alaric, was it?" Kaiser said, leaning heavily on his iron sword like a walking stick. "I'm currently trying to min-max my time-to-token ratio. Engaging in a completely pointless five-versus-one with a walking cliché is a severe detriment to my hourly farm rate. So, kindly, screw off."

Alaric's face twisted in rage. "Kill him! Take his tokens!"

The four cronies charged, their weapons glowing with various elemental enhancements.

Kaiser's sapphire eyes darkened. He didn't have the raw power to block a combined elemental assault. But he didn't need to.

"You guys have an aggro radius the size of a continent, and zero tactical awareness," Kaiser mocked.

He didn't retreat. He stepped forward.

As the first crony swung a flaming broadsword at his neck, Kaiser triggered [Void Step]. He dissolved into a wisp of black smoke, the flaming blade passing harmlessly through the space he just occupied.

He reappeared precisely in the center of their formation.

Before they could react to the sudden spatial shift, Kaiser unleashed a compressed burst of the [Basic Abyssal Breathing Technique]. He didn't aim it at them; he aimed it at the ground.

The heavy, gravitational force of the Abyss slammed into the mossy earth, creating a localized, instantaneous shockwave of immense pressure. The four cronies, caught completely off guard by the sudden invisible weight, had their legs swept out from under them. They crashed violently to the forest floor in a heap of tangled limbs and groans.

Alaric stared in horror as his entire squad was neutralized in exactly two seconds without Kaiser even swinging a weapon.

"W-What was that?" Alaric stammered, taking a step back.

Kaiser slowly walked toward him, the faint, terrifying aura of the Abyss clinging to his clothes like a physical shadow. He spun his blunted sword lazily in his hand.

"Basic crowd control, my blonde friend," Kaiser smirked. He closed the distance in a blur of agility, grabbing the front of Alaric's expensive breastplate and pulling him close.

For a fraction of a second, Kaiser dropped his disguise.

Alaric found himself staring into twin pools of absolute, endless black void. The temperature around Kaiser didn't drop, but Alaric felt a primal, soul-deep chill that was infinitely more terrifying than the Princess's ice. It was the feeling of standing at the edge of a bottomless cliff in the dark.

"Now," Kaiser whispered smoothly, his eyes returning to sapphire blue before Alaric's brain could fully process the horror. "Be a good loot-goblin and hand over the tokens."

Trembling violently, Alaric reached into his pouch and handed over six glowing Crest Tokens.

"Pleasure doing business with you," Kaiser winked, releasing the noble, who promptly collapsed to his knees in a cold sweat.

Token Count: 10/10.

"Objective complete in three hours. Time to find a nice tree to sleep in until the timer runs out," Kaiser stretched, extremely pleased with himself.

The temperature in the clearing suddenly, violently plummeted.

The damp moss beneath Kaiser's boots instantly froze, shattering like glass as he tried to take a step. The dense humidity of the jungle rapidly condensed, falling as a localized blizzard.

[SYSTEM WARNING: EXTREME DANGER DETECTED.]

[Target [Valeria Vespera] is approaching. Intent: Hostile/Investigative.]

Kaiser cursed under his breath, instinctively diving sideways just as a massive, jagged spear of solid, absolute-zero ice violently erupted from the ground exactly where he had been standing.

Through the swirling snow, Princess Valeria emerged.

She looked ethereal, a goddess of winter gliding over the frozen earth. Her silver eyes were locked onto Kaiser, burning with an intense, analytical fire.

"You did not use a parlor trick," Valeria spoke, her voice carrying over the howling wind like shattered crystal. "The spatial shift. The localized pressure. It was dense. Dark. And anomalous. I despise things I do not understand."

"Princess, if you wanted an autograph, you just had to ask," Kaiser chuckled nervously, his breath misting in the freezing air. He was actively cycling his Abyssal breathing just to keep the blood in his veins from freezing solid. "Attempted impalement is a terrible way to start a conversation."

"Draw your weapon, anomaly," she demanded, raising a delicate hand. The air around her shimmered as dozens of razor-sharp ice blades materialized, pointing directly at his heart. "If you are weak, you will be teleported out to the infirmary. If you are hiding something, I will carve it out of you."

Dammit, Kaiser panicked. An SS-Rank Ice Core. I can't block that. I can't outrun it. And I can't use Void Step continuously; I don't have the mana pool.

"Sorry, Princess, but I don't fight beautiful women unless they buy me dinner first," Kaiser yelled, turning on his heel and sprinting into the dense, frozen underbrush.

Valeria's eyes narrowed in genuine irritation. "Insolent."

She flicked her wrist. The barrage of ice blades fired like a volley of sniper rounds, tearing through the ancient trees, turning trunks into splintered, frozen shrapnel.

Kaiser ran like a man possessed. He utilized [Otaku's Insight] to predict the trajectory of the ice, ducking, weaving, and occasionally using a short-range [Void Step] to bypass the massive walls of frost she was erecting to trap him.

He was burning mana at a terrifying rate.

Suddenly, a solid wall of ice erupted right in his path, thirty feet high. He skidded to a halt, trapped in a narrow canyon of frozen trees. He spun around.

Valeria was walking slowly down the canyon, entirely composed, not a single hair out of place.

"You are surprisingly evasive for someone with such a weak outward aura," she noted, tilting her head slightly. "But you are out of mana, and out of space."

She raised her hand, gathering a terrifying amount of freezing energy. This wasn't a test; it was a localized execution.

Kaiser gritted his teeth. Desperate times.

As Valeria unleashed a concentrated beam of freezing energy aimed at his chest, Kaiser didn't try to dodge sideways. He triggered his very last, dregs-of-his-core [Void Step].

He bypassed the beam entirely.

But his spatial calculation, fueled by exhaustion, was off by exactly three feet.

Instead of appearing behind her, he materialized directly in front of her, completely inside her personal guard, their bodies crashing into each other.

The momentum sent them both tumbling to the frozen ground.

Kaiser hit the ice hard, his ribs groaning in protest, but the soft, surprising weight that landed squarely on top of him absorbed most of the impact.

The localized blizzard instantly ceased.

Kaiser blinked, clearing the stars from his vision. Valeria Vespera, the untouchable Frost Empress of the Academy, was currently straddling his waist. Her hands were planted flat on his chest, and her face was mere inches from his own.

Her silver eyes, normally pools of calm, indifferent ice, were blown wide in absolute, unadulterated shock. No one—literally no one in her entire life—had ever bypassed her defensive aura, let alone physically tackled her to the ground.

For a moment, neither of them moved. The silence in the frozen forest was deafening.

Kaiser could feel the freezing temperature of her body through his tunic, contrasting sharply with his own frantic, hot body heat. She smelled sharply of winter pine and ozone.

Before her shock could transition into lethal, world-ending rage, Kaiser seized the initiative.

He didn't scramble away. Instead, he relaxed perfectly into the ice beneath him. He looked up at her, releasing the absolute maximum output of his [Alluring Abyss] passive skill through his eyes, letting the sapphire disguise melt away completely for three long, agonizing seconds.

Valeria froze.

The endless, terrifying magnetism of his pitch-black eyes seized her soul. It was a dark, consuming gravity that completely contradicted the pristine, absolute order of her ice. It was chaotic. It was terrifying.

It was utterly, intoxicatingly beautiful.

Kaiser reached up slowly, his bruised knuckles gently brushing a stray lock of moonlight-silver hair away from her stunned face.

"You know, Princess," Kaiser murmured, his voice a low, vibrating purr that cut through the cold air. "If you wanted to get me alone on the ground, the ice spears were entirely unnecessary. A simple 'please' would have sufficed."

A full, heavy second passed.

Then, a frantic, violent blush exploded across Valeria's flawless, pale cheeks, staining her skin a deep, furious crimson. Her breath hitched, her heart suddenly hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The intoxicating pull of his eyes, the physical intimacy of the position, and the sheer, unfathomable audacity of his words created a perfect storm of emotional short-circuiting.

"Y-You...!" she gasped, her voice entirely losing its regal composure. She scrambled off him as if he were made of hellfire, backing up several paces, her chest heaving as she pointed a remarkably shaky finger at him. "You vile, degenerate, anomalous...!"

[Target: Valeria Vespera. Emotion detected: Unprecedented Fluster, Shock, Deep-Rooted Intrigue, Latent Possessiveness.]

[Affection updated: 5% -> 15%. (She has never felt this before. She does not know how to process you. She will not let you out of her sight.)]

Kaiser slowly sat up, groaning, his eyes safely back to sapphire blue. He pulled the ten Crest Tokens from his pouch and held them up.

"As delightful as this has been, Your Highness," Kaiser smirked, tapping the token on his palm. "I've hit my quota. See you in class."

He reached out and crushed a small teleportation crystal built into his token pouch, the standard escape mechanism for those who finished early.

A pillar of golden light engulfed him.

As Kaiser faded away, leaving the freezing forest behind, he caught one last glimpse of Princess Valeria. She wasn't preparing another attack. She was standing perfectly still amidst the shattered ice, her hand pressed against her own heavily beating heart, staring at the spot he had just vanished from with an expression of terrifying, unblinking intensity.

Phase Three complete, Kaiser thought as the world dissolved into light. And I definitely just woke up the Yandere.
