Monday morning. The apartment felt unusually tense. Ethan was already dressed for work, checking his emails, while I sat on the edge of the sofa scrolling through my phone. I tried to shake off the lingering unease from the weekend, but something didn't sit right.
Then my phone buzzed. It was a message from my new co-worker, Rafael, thanking me for helping him with a project.
I frowned at the text. "Thanks for your help today. Can I buy you coffee later?"
Before I could respond, Ethan's phone lit up with a notification. He glanced at it and immediately tensed. His jaw tightened, and the smile he usually wore disappeared.
"Ethan?" I asked cautiously.
"Who's Rafael?" he said quietly, not looking at me.
My stomach dropped. "He's just a co-worker… we were working on a project together. That's all!"
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, sighing. "Okay… but why would he want to take you out for coffee alone?"
"It's not like that!" I protested, frustration creeping into my voice. "He's just asking as friends… and work-related!"
Ethan looked away, his expression unreadable. "I don't know, Lara… I guess… I just feel uneasy. I mean, after everything… I don't want to lose you. Or feel like I'm competing with someone else."
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself. "Ethan, you're not competing with anyone. I'm with you. Only you. Rafael is just… someone I'm helping at work. You have to trust me."
He exhaled slowly, still tense. "I know… I'm sorry. I shouldn't let it get to me. But… I can't help feeling a little… jealous."
I reached for his hand, squeezing it. "Ethan… we've been through so much. Remember the hospital… the misunderstandings… the fights? We survived all of that. Trust is what keeps us together. You have to believe in us. In me."
He finally looked at me, eyes softening. "I do… I really do. I just… I hate feeling like I'm not enough."
"You're more than enough," I whispered, leaning closer. "You always will be. Rafael… anyone else… they don't matter. It's you. Only you."
He pulled me into a quick hug, the tension in his shoulders slowly melting. "Okay… I believe you. I'm sorry for doubting."
I smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair from his face. "It's okay. But you see… little moments like this… they test us. They show us how much we really trust and care for each other."
He nodded, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead. "You're right. And I love that we can talk about it. I… love you, Lara."
"I love you too, Ethan," I said softly, leaning against him.
Even though jealousy and doubt had tried to creep in, the conversation reminded us why we fought to stay together: because trust, honesty, and love were stronger than any challenge life could throw at us.
