Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Cold First Meeting

The Obsidian Group tower looked less like a building… and more like a warning

Glass stretched endlessly upward, reflecting the morning sky like it didn't belong to the earth below. People moved in and out with purpose—fast, polished, untouchable

Ava stood at the entrance, gripping the strap of her bag

"Okay… you can do this," she whispered

Her reflection stared back at her in the glass doors—slightly messy hair, tired eyes, but determined

She stepped inside

"Name.

The receptionist didn't look at her when she spoke

"Ava," she replied quickly. "I'm here for the interview.

A pause

A long one

Then the receptionist finally looked up, scanning her with quiet judgment

"You're late.

Ava's heart dropped

"I know, but—

"Top floor.

That was it

No explanation. No warmth

Just direction

The elevator ride felt too quiet

Each passing floor felt heavier than the last

By the time she reached the top, her palms were slightly sweaty

The doors opened

And there he was

A man stood by a large glass window, his back turned to her

Tall

Still

Completely composed

"Close the door," he said

His voice

The same one

Ava stepped inside and quietly closed it behind her

She stood there, unsure of where to go

He didn't turn around

"You're late," he said again

Her fingers tightened slightly. "Yes, I am.

A pause

Then, finally—he turned

His eyes were sharp

Cold

Unfriendly

They scanned her like she was something that didn't belong in his world

"You think showing up late is acceptable?

"I think showing up at all when I didn't have to… says something," she replied calmly

Silence

Something shifted in his expression—just for a second

But it was gone almost immediately

"You're bold," he said

"I'm desperate.

That got his attention

His gaze lingered on her a little longer this time

"Most desperate people are willing to beg," he said

Ava held her ground

"I didn't come to beg.

Another silence

Tension

Heavy

Uncomfortable

Alive

He walked toward her slowly

Each step deliberate

Controlled

He stopped a few feet away—close enough to make her aware of his presence, but not enough to touch

"Tell me," he said quietly, "why I should hire someone who couldn't even meet a deadline?

Ava lifted her chin slightly

"Because I'm the only one who showed up anyway.

Something flickered in his eyes

Interest

Faint

But there

"You're confident.

"I have to be.

"And if you fail?

She didn't hesitate

"Then I'll learn.

He studied her

Really studied her this time

Not just her words

But her posture

Her voice

The quiet fire in her eyes

"…We'll see," he said finally

He turned slightly

"Sit.

She sat

Carefully

And that was when the real test began

Questions

Sharp

Unforgiving

"Your experience?

"Minimal, but I'm a fast learner.

"Your weaknesses?

"I trust too easily.

His brow lifted slightly

"Not something I expected you to admit.

Ava met his gaze

"I don't believe in lying to impress people.

That earned a pause

A longer one this time

For the first time, he didn't respond immediately

He leaned back slightly, studying her like she was something unfamiliar

Something unpredictable

Something… interesting

"Why this company?" he asked

Ava hesitated for just a second

Then

"Because it's the only place where people either survive… or get broken trying.

A flicker

Not a smile

Not even close

But something in his expression changed

"Good answer," he said quietly

She blinked

"Does that mean—

"It means nothing yet.

A beat

"Don't misunderstand," he added. "You're not hired.

Her heart dropped

"Then why am I still here?

He looked at her again

And this time

there was something unreadable in his gaze

Something deeper than coldness

"Because I don't waste time on people who don't interest me.

Ava froze slightly

"…And I interest you?

A very brief pause

Too brief to mean nothing

Too long to mean nothing

Then

"Don't read too much into it.

But the tension didn't leave

Not even a little

"Go home," he said

"Prepare properly.

She stood slowly

"Does that mean I get another chance?

His eyes met hers again

Sharp

Controlled

But something behind them—something quieter—lingered

"Don't make me regret it.

Ava nodded

"I won't.

She turned to leave

But just before she reached the door

"Miss Ava.

She paused

Didn't turn around

"Yes?

A small silence

Then

"…9 AM," he said

"Don't be late.

The door closed behind her

And for a moment, she just stood there

Breathing

Trying to steady her heart

Because something about that man

Was dangerous

Not because he was cruel

But because

she could feel it

That invisible pull

That quiet tension

That something between them

Already starting.Chapter 2: The Cold First Meetin
