Michael breached the palace at dawn.
His forces had fought through the last of Lucifer's defenses during the night. Now they stood in the great hall where Alexander had once held court, where Pantheons had gathered, where Lucifer had tried to build his kingdom of free angels.
And found only Lucifer.
Alone.
His followers had fled. Scattered. Dionysus disappeared into the mortal realm. Uriel took the surviving warriors and retreated. Azrael simply vanished into whatever shadows kept his secrets.
Only Lucifer remained.
Standing in the center of the hall. His blade of light in hand. His six wings spread. Waiting.
Michael's army filled the doorways. Surrounded him. Could have ended it in seconds with overwhelming force.
But Michael raised his hand.
"Leave us," he commanded.
Gabriel hesitated. "Michael—"
"Leave. Us."
The angels withdrew. Reluctantly. But they withdrew.
Michael and Lucifer stood alone.
Two brothers. The first angel and the second. The Morning Star and the Sword of Heaven.
"It ends here," Michael said.
"Yes," Lucifer agreed. "One way or another."
They moved.
Blade met blade with a sound that shook the foundations of Olympus. Light against fire. Brother against brother.
This wasn't like their fight in Heaven's throne room. No audience. No one to perform for. No cause to defend.
Just two beings who had loved each other trying to kill each other because they'd chosen different paths.
Michael fought with desperate precision. Every strike perfectly placed. Every defense textbook flawless.
Lucifer fought with the fury of someone who had nothing left to lose.
They were equally matched.
Had always been equally matched.
But Michael had one advantage: he wasn't breaking from what he was doing.
Lucifer was shattering with every blow.
"You could surrender," Michael said between strikes. "End this without more death."
"And then what?" Lucifer parried, counter-attacked. "Execution? Imprisonment? Eternal humiliation?"
"Exile. Real exile. Take your followers and go so far from Heaven we never find you."
"She'd never allow that."
"She might if I asked."
Lucifer laughed bitterly. "You think she'd listen? She doesn't care what you want, Michael. She only cares what you do."
"At least she's here!" Michael's control cracked. "At least she didn't abandon us!"
"She abandoned me!" Lucifer's voice broke. "The moment she made you, she abandoned me. Every new angel was a piece of her attention I lost. Every perfect one of you was proof I wasn't special anymore."
Their blades locked. Face to face.
"That's what this is about?" Michael's voice was incredulous. "You started a war because you felt replaced?"
"I started a war because I wanted to matter!" Lucifer shoved him back. "Because I needed her to see me. To acknowledge that I existed. That I was more than just the blueprint for better angels."
"You were always more." Michael's voice was rough. "You were the first. The morning star. You were—"
"Was," Lucifer interrupted. "Past tense. Everything I was died when she called me Liar. When she ordered you to kill me. When she chose order over her son."
He attacked again. Desperate. Wild. All technique abandoned.
Michael defended. But he was defending against more than a blade now.
Against the grief. The need. The terrible hunger for love that had driven Lucifer to burn the world.
"I never wanted to be god," Lucifer said, tears streaming. "I just wanted to be seen. To be loved like I was before you all existed. Before I became just another angel in the host."
"Then surrender!" Michael caught his blade. Disarmed him. Sent the weapon clattering away. "Surrender and I'll protect you. I'll convince Evermore to spare you. I'll—"
"You'll do nothing." Lucifer stood defenseless. "Because she doesn't listen to you either. We're both just tools, brother. Weapons she uses to maintain control. The difference is you've accepted it."
Michael raised the Flaming Blade. Pointed it at Lucifer's heart.
"Last chance. Surrender or die."
Lucifer looked at the blade. Then at Michael. Then up toward where Heaven hung in the sky, distant and perfect and closed to him forever.
"I'd rather die free than live as a tool."
Michael's hand trembled.
The blade shook.
His whole body was shaking now, the control finally, completely breaking.
"Please," Michael whispered. "Please don't make me do this."
"You don't have to." Lucifer smiled sadly. "You can choose to let me go. To lie to Evermore again. To think for yourself."
"And watch you burn more temples? Start more wars? Destroy everything in your need to be noticed?"
"Maybe. Or maybe I'd finally accept that she'll never love me the way I need. Maybe I'd find peace in exile."
"Or maybe you'd come for Heaven again. Come for the throne. Come to take what you think you deserve." Michael's voice hardened. "I can't risk it. Can't risk you."
"Then do it." Lucifer spread his arms. "Strike. Prove you're the perfect weapon she made you to be."
Michael looked at his brother. At the angel who had stood beside him since the first dawn. Who had taught him to fly. Who had shown him how to forge the Flaming Blade.
Who had spared his life twice when he could have ended everything.
And Michael made his choice.
The blade fell.
But not toward Lucifer's heart.
Michael drove it into the floor beside him. The Flaming Blade embedded in stone, burning bright and terrible.
"Go," Michael said. "Take your followers. Flee to the farthest corner of creation. And if I ever see you again, if you ever threaten Heaven again, I won't hesitate."
Lucifer stared at him. "You're letting me go? Again?"
"I'm choosing mercy over duty. Again." Michael's voice was hollow. "Because I can't be what she needs me to be. Can't kill the only family I have left who still sees me as more than a weapon."
He pulled the blade from the floor. Turned away.
"Go before I change my mind."
Lucifer moved toward the door. Stopped. Looked back.
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me." Michael's voice was broken. "Thank whatever part of me still remembers loving you. And hope it dies before we meet again."
Lucifer fled.
Gathered his scattered followers. Descended from Valhalla toward the spaces below.
Not toward the mortal realm.
Deeper.
Toward the Underworld. Toward Neverland. Toward the places where even Evermore's light didn't reach.
Toward the only place left where he could hide.
Hell.
Michael stood alone in Alexander's throne room and felt the weight of his choice settling over him.
He had defied Evermore. Again. Had shown mercy when commanded to execute.
Had chosen love over duty for the final time.
When the other angels returned, when they found Lucifer gone, when they asked what happened...
Michael would lie.
Would say Lucifer fled before he could strike. That the coward had run rather than face judgment.
Would protect his brother one last time.
Even though it meant damning himself.
Because that's what love was.
Sacrifice.
And Michael, for all his discipline and duty and perfect obedience, had finally learned that love mattered more.
