The first wave hit at dawn.
Michael led them personally. Hundreds of angels descending from Heaven like falling stars, their weapons blazing with holy light, their wings creating a sound like thunder.
Lucifer watched from Olympus's highest tower and felt his heart clench.
This was real.
This was war.
"Hold positions!" he shouted to his defenders. "Wait for them to enter the kill zones!"
The rebels had spent three days preparing. Traps throughout the city. Ambush points at every corner. Narrow passages designed to negate Heaven's superior numbers.
Now they would see if it was enough.
The angels struck the outer defenses. Met resistance from Uriel's warriors. Clashed in the streets with the sound of steel on steel, blade on blade, brother on brother.
The battle raged.
Lucifer descended to join it, his blade of light cutting through the chaos. He fought not to kill but to defend. To protect his followers. To prove that exile didn't mean surrender.
And across the battlefield, he saw Michael.
The Sword of Heaven moved through rebels like a force of nature. The Flaming Blade sang its terrible song, cutting down angels who had once stood beside him in worship.
He was magnificent.
He was terrible.
He was everything Evermore had made him to be.
Their eyes met across the chaos.
Neither moved toward the other.
Not yet.
The first assault lasted hours. When it finally broke, when Heaven's angels retreated to regroup, the streets of Olympus ran with silver blood.
Casualties on both sides. Dozens dead. More wounded.
But Lucifer's defenses had held.
Barely.
"They'll come again," Azrael said, tending to his own wounds. "Harder next time. They're learning our tactics."
"Then we adapt." Lucifer looked at the carnage around them. At angels who had been friends now lying dead in the street. "Move the traps. Change the ambush points. Make them think they know our strategy and then shift it."
They worked through the night.
Moved defenses. Repositioned warriors. Created new kill zones.
And wondered how long they could sustain this.
The second assault came at noon the next day.
This time, Heaven changed tactics. Instead of a full frontal assault, they sent smaller, targeted strikes. Trying to draw out Lucifer's defenders. To learn their positions.
Lucifer saw through it.
"Don't take the bait," he ordered. "Hold positions. Let them waste their strength."
But some couldn't resist. Uriel led a counter-attack, trying to catch one of Heaven's probing forces. Walked straight into an ambush.
Half his squad died before they could retreat.
Uriel limped back, bloodied and furious.
"They anticipated us," he snarled. "Knew we'd counter-attack."
"Because that's what warriors do." Lucifer helped him sit. "We can't fight like we used to. Can't be predictable. They know us too well."
"Then how do we win?"
Lucifer looked out at where Heaven's forces were regrouping.
"We don't win. We survive long enough for them to question whether victory is worth the cost."
The siege continued.
Days blurred into each other. Attack. Defense. Casualties. Brief respites. Then attack again.
Heaven ground forward. Inch by bloody inch. Taking streets. Claiming territory. Pushing the rebels back toward Olympus's center.
But every step cost them.
Angels who had sung hymns together now killed each other in the streets. Brothers turned blades on brothers. The beautiful became horrific.
And through it all, Michael led Heaven's forces with mechanical precision.
He didn't speak. Didn't hesitate. Didn't show mercy.
He simply fought.
Like the weapon he'd been made to be.
Gabriel fought beside him, loyal to the end. But even he was cracking.
"This is wrong," Gabriel said during a brief respite. "We're killing our own. For what? Because Lucifer burned a temple? Because he wants freedom?"
"Because he rebelled," Michael said flatly.
"So did we." Gabriel gestured to the carnage. "We rebelled against thought. Against question. Against anything that challenged Evermore's absolute rule. How is that different?"
Michael didn't answer.
Because he didn't have one.
The siege entered its second week.
Lucifer's forces were exhausted. Outnumbered. Running low on options.
Heaven pressed harder. Drove deeper into Olympus. Got closer to the central palace where Lucifer had made his headquarters.
It was only a matter of time now.
"We need to retreat," Azrael said. "Fall back. Flee to the mortal realm."
"No." Lucifer's voice was firm. "If we run, we lose everything. The Pantheons won't follow us. The rebels will scatter. It ends here."
"Then it ends with our deaths."
"Perhaps."
That night, Lucifer stood on the palace balcony and looked down at his crumbling defenses.
They had fought well. Better than anyone had expected. Had made Heaven bleed for every inch.
But it wasn't enough.
It was never going to be enough.
Tomorrow, Michael would breach the final defenses. Would reach the palace. Would stand before Lucifer with that flaming blade and finish what he'd started in Heaven's throne room.
And this time, there would be no mercy.
No hesitation.
Just the Sword of Heaven doing what swords do.
Cutting away what needed to be cut.
Lucifer closed his eyes and thought of Evermore.
Of the love he'd lost. The approval he'd craved. The throne he'd wanted not for power but for recognition.
All of it ending in a burning city and the brother he loved coming to kill him.
"I'm sorry," he whispered to the night. "For all of it. I'm so sorry."
But sorry didn't rebuild temples.
Didn't resurrect the dead.
Didn't undo war.
Tomorrow would come.
And with it, the end.
