ANDREW'S POV
The previous day was extremely stressful and draining. From one problem to another. Also, Vivian, the Queen of Gossip, such a wonderful girl. As I prepared for the day, I couldn't help but still think about the background of the school.
Betrayal.
However, by the time I was done preparing for class, I was already late for class so instead of going to the cafeteria to make the cupcake as usual, I walked over to the class area. However, on my way, I over head some student talking about Emma's case.
"I heard she was sent home." One said.
"That is a lie. The school gate opens yearly, that is, once a year. " The other replied.
If they were the only ones talking about it, I would have ignored but it was everyone...when I say everyone,
I meant everyone.
I hurried to the class to check if it was true…
As I entered the class, I looked around…..no Emma, just her weird minions who kept staring at me.
Also Jane was back, she was seated at her seat at the second to the last row with her head on her table. She raised her head up a little though still slightly lowered as she stared at her notebook.
From where I stood, I could tell she was exhausted not physically but mentally like she had not slept all night.
"Well who wouldn't be" I thought then walked over to my seat.
For a second, I considered walking up to her, but after everything that had happened recently, I stopped myself. Jane already looked overwhelmed enough, and somehow, every time I got involved lately, things only became worse.
So instead, I pulled my chair in front of the classroom back quietly and sat down
Suddenly, she stood up and walked over to the door like she was being controlled. At first, I laughed it off as a usual Jane's weirdness until a pen fell from her hand the sound echoed softly against the floor. It was then I looked at her and I realized..
Her pupil was gone,
all that was left, just white.
And she stood at the entrance, frozen
Still, Lifeless.
I stood up, shoved past two students and stood beside her instantly. Her skin looked pale, terrifyingly pale, while her breathing came out unevenly.
I held her hand and kept calling her name but she was not responding.
By this time, the whole class attention and that of some Passers-by were on us.
"Jane come on" I begged but still no respond.
"Jane!" I called again, gripping her shoulder carefully.
No response.
"I will go get the school nurse." Nafisat said and then ran off.
Around us, the classroom had already exploded into chaos.
"Oh my God"
"What happened to her?!"
"She's not waking up!"
"She's cursed too" Another panicked.
"Shut up!" My voice came out louder than I intended.
The entire classroom fell silent immediately. I looked up furiously at the students surrounding us.
After a while, a student brought water to be poured on her hoping it will bring her back to reality but instead…
She started convulsing…..foaming in mouth, shaking violently as she fall backwards. I supported her with my hand, by the time she reached the ground, she was calm a bit.
I lost my patience waiting for the nurse, so I carried.
With the help of a random student, I placed her on my back and head for the clinic. On the way, there were so many student wanting to see what was going on. As I was struggling to go through, the way started to clear,
Vivian
She was standing right in front of me. A silent sigh escaped my lips.
"I came as soon as I heard. Lets go." She said then cleared the road for us to pass. Some other girls with her also did the same.
Students moved aside immediately the moment they saw us, whispers spreading faster than our footsteps.
"That's Jane the girl that I said her roommate accused her of poisoning her roommate"
"What happened to her?"
"She collapsed"
"Do you think it's another letter?"
"I heard she was already being investigated"
"It is probably Emma."
The voices kept following us all the way to the infirmary, by the time we arrived, the nurse immediately rushed forward.
"What happened to her?"
"She collapsed in class," I answered quickly.
The Head Doctor Temi and another staff member quickly took her from me before wheeling her inside.
The doors closed directly in front of us. I stared at them silently, my chest still rising heavily from panic.
"Thank you for coming." I said to the people that came with us and after which they left.
"Let us know how she is. I will report to the teachers too." The class President, Jola said then left.
"you are not going for class, are you?" I asked Vivian.
For once, she was not smiling.
"Na." She said, paused before continuing. " Also, Emma is still in school." Vivian said with a straight face.
That caught me off guard.
"What!!"
"It is just a rumour. I saw her this morning, she is very sick. She might not last."
"Can I see her?"
"I can make it work." She replied then rest on the wall beside me.
There was silence of a while.
"What happened to her?" she asked breaking the silence.
I shook my head slightly. "I don't know."
A few minutes later, hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Nafisat arrived.
The moment she saw us at the infirmary doors, her expression changed completely.
It looked like she was afraid.
"Oh my God…" she whispered weakly.
Vivian immediately wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"It's okay," Vivian said softly, though even she did not sound convinced.
"You said you will get the nurse?" I asked no caring about the whole drama she was painting.
"I was told she wasn't around so I went to look for a teacher by the time I got back I was told you guys were here." Nafisat explained but for some reason, it just didn't sit right with me.
I leaned against the wall tiredly before running a hand through my hair. None of this made sense anymore. Everything around Jane kept becoming stranger, though she did not get the letter or any threat but why all of this? Also, Nafisat behaving so sus. There is more to all this.
The hallway remained tense for what felt like forever before the infirmary door finally opened.
The Doctor stepped out slowly.
"She's stable for now," she said.
The relief that hit all of us was immediate but before anyone could ask another question, the nurse continued.
"She collapsed from severe mental stress and exhaustion… but there's something strange."
My stomach tightened slightly.
"What?" Vivian asked carefully.
Temi hesitated.
"She's been talking in her unconscious state."
All of us exchanged confused looks immediately.
"What was she saying?" I asked.
The Doctor frowned slightly before answering.
"One particular name repeatedly."
The hallway suddenly felt quieter.
"What name?" Nafisat asked softly.
Temi looked directly at us.
"Jason."
It felt like a joke when I heard what the nurse said.
"but why would she call his name?" Nafisat asked.
"I have no idea."
"Can we see her?" Vivian asked moving closer to the nurse.
"Sure, why not" Miss Temi replied pointing to the door.
Vivian entered first, then Nafisat followed behind.
"Is she fine?" I asked the Doctor as she was about to enter the clinic. She paused, turned then looked at me in the eyes.
"You want the truth or the lie?"
The truth or the lie?
From a Doctor?
What hope is left?
"The lie first." I answered her.
"Jane is fine." She said smiling like she was trying to lighten my mood.
"Will she be?" I asked further.
"At the moment, she is still unconscious and she is running a fever. She should get better, we hope so but the doctor said she might slip into a coma." The nurse said then hit my shoulder playfully.
"That was the truth?" I asked, she replied with a nod.
A hot tears dropped from my eyes subconsciously. I wiped it immediately.
"You can come in when you are read but I couldn't save Nathan but I will try to save her." She said then entered.
At that point, I broke down…..sat on the floor.
Tears flowed from my eyes like they have been held in for years.
I cried…
I was so scared that I would lose Jane and I remember clearly siting at the same spot waiting for Nathan but he never came out just to hear that he is gone.
Will this happen again? Or am I the problem? I kept thinking.
My face towel at this time was soaked in tears. I think this time I cried a lot because I like her and I never moaned my friend because I was to stubborn to admit that he is gone and it was my fault.
"Really Andrew, clean your tears she is fine." A very familiar voice called out, one in which I could recognize from anywhere in the world it is no other person but…...
