The disturbance revealed itself quickly.
The ground did not fracture this time.
The field shifted instead.
Kael felt it immediately, the alignment forming unevenly as the structure around them began to distort.
The wolf-type stepped forward, his posture tightening.
"Stay focused," he said.
Kael nodded, already tracking the pattern.
The creatures emerged in sequence.
Not chaotic.
Not random.
Structured.
That was new.
"They're following the field," Kael said.
"Yes," Lyra replied.
"That means the field is directing them."
The wolf-type glanced back briefly.
"Then adjust it," he said.
Kael exhaled slowly.
He stepped forward.
This time, he didn't wait for an attack.
He reached for the alignment directly.
The response came immediately.
The field shifted.
The creatures faltered.
For a brief moment—
Everything stabilized.
Then—
It broke.
The structure snapped out of alignment, the field collapsing unevenly as the creatures surged forward with renewed force.
Kael staggered slightly, thrown off by the sudden shift.
"…That's not right," he said.
"No," Lyra replied. "It isn't."
The wolf-type moved in, cutting through one of the creatures with controlled precision.
"Your adjustment destabilized the structure," he said.
Kael frowned, refocusing.
"I didn't misalign it," he said. "It didn't hold."
He reached for it again.
More carefully this time.
The alignment formed.
He adjusted it—
Slightly.
Not forcing.
Not correcting everything at once.
Just enough.
The field held.
The creatures slowed.
The team moved.
This time, the structure remained stable long enough to finish the engagement.
When it ended, the clearing fell silent once more.
Kael lowered his hand, breathing steadily but focused.
"…That worked," he said.
"Yes," Lyra replied.
Kael looked at the space around them.
"The first time failed," he said. "Because I tried to fix everything."
Lyra nodded.
"And the second time worked," she said, "because you didn't."
Kael exhaled slowly.
That was the difference.
He wasn't controlling the system.
He was learning how to adjust it—
Without breaking it.
