They did not return to normal operations after the mission.
Kael felt the change before it was announced. The atmosphere inside the guild carried a heavier tension than before, not just from curiosity or unease, but from something more structured. Movements were more controlled, conversations quieter, and the usual rhythm of activity had been replaced with something deliberate.
He glanced toward Lyra as they stepped inside.
"They're not just watching anymore," he said.
"No," she replied. "They are preparing."
That word settled uneasily.
The authority figures were already present.
This time, they did not remain at the edges of the room. Instead, they stood closer to the center, positioned in a way that made their presence unavoidable. The space around them remained clear, not because anyone was told to move, but because no one chose to stand near them.
Kael exhaled slowly. "That's new."
"Yes," Lyra said. "It is escalation."
One of the figures stepped forward as they approached.
"You will report," they said.
Kael glanced at Lyra.
"You're really committed to this tone," he muttered.
Lyra ignored him and stepped forward.
"The disturbance was not chaotic," she said. "The field exhibited structured instability. Initial adjustment failed due to overcorrection. Secondary adjustment succeeded when applied incrementally."
The authority figure's gaze shifted to Kael.
"You altered the field twice," they said.
Kael nodded once. "The first time didn't hold."
"Because you exceeded acceptable parameters."
Kael tilted his head slightly. "Or because I tried to do too much at once."
The figure did not respond immediately.
Instead, they studied him.
"You are demonstrating adaptive behavior beyond imposed limits," they said.
Kael crossed his arms. "You keep saying that like it's unexpected."
"It is not expected within human constraints."
Kael exhaled quietly.
"…Then maybe the constraints are wrong."
The statement hung in the air.
No one spoke.
For the first time—
The room felt like it was waiting.
