Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 19 — MESSAGES FROM A LAYER THAT SHOULDN’T EXIST

The silence no longer felt like a condition.

It felt like a decision.

As if something out there—unseen, untouchable, even incomprehensible—had chosen to sever this space from the rest of the world.

The small room remained.

The walls did not change.

The lights stayed on.

But the way the room "existed"... was different.

Lin Xuan stood in the center of the room.

He tried to move his feet.

Just a little.

But his body seemed to hesitate.

Not out of weakness.

But because every part of him seemed to say: stay here… do not disturb the process.

He inhaled.

Air entered normally.

And yet, there was something strange—

as if every breath brought in something that wasn't just oxygen.

The phone in his hand was still glowing.

The screen no longer felt like a piece of technology.

It felt more like the thin surface of something much deeper.

📡 CORRECTION PHASE: START

Lin Xuan stared at the text without blinking.

A few seconds.

A few more.

Finally, he spoke.

"...If this has already begun..."

"...is there any way to stop it?"

Long Yuer stood before him.

Closer than before.

No longer keeping her distance.

No longer looking relaxed.

"...Not by ordinary means," she answered softly.

Lin Xuan frowned.

"...Unordinary means?"

Long Yuer looked deep into his eyes.

"...By refusing."

"...Refusing what?"

"...Everything they consider to be 'correct'."

Silence.

The answer sounded simple.

But its weight felt unnatural.

Lin Xuan looked at his phone again.

"...And if I fail to refuse?"

Long Yuer didn't answer immediately.

A few seconds passed.

"...Then you won't even realize that you ever refused at all."

Silence.

That sentence made Lin Xuan's chest feel a little heavier.

Suddenly, the phone vibrated.

This time, it was deeper than before.

As if the vibration didn't originate from the device... but from something connected deep inside him.

The screen changed.

Not text.

Not numbers.

But patterns.

Fine lines reappeared.

More complex.

More orderly.

More... perfect.

Lin Xuan stared at it.

And this time—

he realized he was beginning to sink into the pattern.

"...I can see the structure..." he murmured softly.

"...This isn't random..."

"...It's like... a way of thinking..."

Long Yuer moved instantly.

Her hand covered part of the screen.

"Enough," she said firmly.

Lin Xuan jolted.

As if his mind had just been yanked back from something profound.

"...That was almost..." he paused.

"...I almost understood everything..."

Long Yuer watched him sharply.

"...And that is not a good thing."

"...Why?"

"...Because the more you understand the pattern..."

"...the more you become part of the pattern."

Silence.

Lin Xuan immediately looked away.

Yet, the sensation did not vanish.

He could still "feel" the pattern.

Like an echo lingering in his mind.

"...It's not going away..." he said quietly.

"...It's like it's still here..."

Long Yuer nodded.

"...Because it has already entered your consciousness."

"...Does that mean I'm too late?"

"...Not yet."

The answer was quick.

Decisive.

"...As long as you are aware it isn't yours..."

"...you still have control."

The phone changed again.

📡 SYNC PROCESS: 29%

Lin Xuan stared at the number.

"...It's going up again..."

Long Yuer glanced at it.

"...The process continues, even while you stand still."

"...So what do I have to do?"

Long Yuer looked at him.

"...Stay out of sync."

Lin Xuan frowned.

"...How?"

"...By never ceasing to question."

Silence.

The answer felt simple.

But it was difficult to execute when the mind began to be "facilitated."

The pressure in Lin Xuan's head intensified.

It was more palpable now.

As if something was slowly reshaping the pathways of his thoughts.

"...This is getting stronger..." he muttered.

"...It's like... there's a faster way to think..."

"...more efficient..."

He stopped for a moment.

"...And I want to follow it."

Long Yuer looked at him instantly.

"...That is the most dangerous part."

"...Why?"

"...Because it feels like your own choice."

Silence.

And that made Lin Xuan realize something.

What they were doing... wasn't using crude force.

They were making him want to give in on his own.

Suddenly—

the room lights flickered.

Longer than before.

The light dimmed for a moment.

Then returned.

But this time—

the change was clear.

Lin Xuan looked around.

The objects were the same.

But their response had changed.

He moved his hand.

And for a split second—

the space seemed to lag in response.

"...Did you see that?" he asked softly.

Long Yuer nodded.

"...Yes."

"...It's like the world isn't immediately following me..."

"...Because the world is being adjusted."

"...Adjusted to what?"

"...To the version of 'you' that they desire."

Silence.

And that was more terrifying than simply changing one's mind.

The phone changed again.

📡 STRUCTURAL CORRECTION: ESCALATING

📡 REALITY ALIGNMENT: ACTIVE

Lin Xuan read it slowly.

"...They are even changing reality..."

Long Yuer answered quietly.

"...Only a small fraction."

"...Just enough so that you don't feel anything is wrong."

The pressure in his head grew stronger.

The pattern became clearer.

More tempting.

Lin Xuan closed his eyes.

He took a long breath.

"...I know this pattern..." he said softly.

"...I know how they want me to think..."

Long Yuer didn't answer.

She just waited.

A few seconds passed.

Lin Xuan opened his eyes.

"...And it makes sense."

Silence.

"...It makes too much sense."

Long Yuer finally spoke.

"...That is exactly why you must reject it."

The phone changed again.

📡 HIGHER LAYER DIRECT ACCESS: CONFIRMED

The air in the room shifted instantly.

Heavier.

Denser.

Lin Xuan felt something different.

Not pressure.

Not a pattern.

But a presence.

"...This is different now..." he whispered.

Long Yuer nodded slowly.

"...Yes."

"...What is this?"

"...This isn't the System anymore."

Silence.

And in that moment—

a voice emerged.

Not from the outside.

Not from the phone.

From within his consciousness.

"SUBJECT LIN XUAN."

Lin Xuan's body froze instantly.

His breath hitched.

His thoughts seemed to stop for a moment.

"...This... isn't a normal voice..." he said quietly.

Long Yuer nodded.

"...This is direct intervention."

The voice appeared again.

Clearer.

Deeper.

"YOU ARE NOT WITHIN ACCEPTABLE STRUCTURE."

Lin Xuan swallowed hard.

"...They can't fit me into their system..."

Long Yuer answered.

"...And that makes you dangerous to them."

Silence.

For the first time—

the situation had flipped.

The phone changed one last time.

📡 CORRECTION PROGRESS: 42%

The number climbed again.

The pressure mounted.

The pattern grew stronger.

The temptation grew larger.

Lin Xuan stood still.

His eyes stared straight ahead.

"...I could follow this now..." he said softly.

"...I could stop fighting..."

Long Yuer didn't move.

"...And?"

A few seconds passed.

Lin Xuan took a long, deep breath.

"...But that wouldn't be me."

Silence.

For the first time—

in the midst of a system trying to determine everything—

he chose to remain imperfect.

And that choice—

did not align with what the system wanted.

Outside the room—

the world went on.

But inside—

something far greater than the world itself...

had just realized one thing:

This Node cannot be repaired.
