Chapter 18 - WHAT IT COSTS TO STAY

Chapter 18: What It Costs to Stay

When his words finally died away, there was no relief in the hush. It felt like the instant before something shattered. Emily remained rooted to the spot. Her heart was still pounding from the pressure, from the shadows, from the instinctive response she'd felt inside her. But now, with Lena just behind her and her mate dueling a few feet away, a different sensation began to swell. Not fear. Not power. Something achingly human. Confusion.

"What do you mean… good?" she whispered, her defiance drained, her voice small.

The taller man studied her face, as though weighing each flicker of emotion. "It means you're not as lost as you believe."

Emily exhaled in disbelief. "You don't know anything about me."

He shook his head gently. "On the contrary—we understand exactly what happens to people like you."

Those words dug into her chest, people like you. She forced herself to speak. "Then tell me why this is happening."

He hesitated. That pause unsettled her more than any battle cry. Behind her, Lena's fingers curled around her sleeve..tentative, anchoring. "Emily… please" Lena murmured. "Let's go. We can figure this out later. We don't have to stay."

Emily wanted to agree. She longed to retreat to the safety of home, to the rhythm of her mother's late-night worries, to the part of herself that was just Emily. But that familiar self felt unreachable now.

A sharp crack echoed to her left. Emily spun toward the noise. Her mate and the other man collided again, their movements tight, practiced, each strike purposeful and far more dangerous for it. For a heartbeat, she held her breath. Not because of the fight, but because of him. He moved with urgency, tension, a desperate intensity she'd never seen before.

"Focus" the taller man's voice cut through her thoughts. Emily turned back to him, her expression hardening. "You can't ignore this" he said. "You've already crossed the line."

"I didn't choose any of this" she shot back.

"No," he admitted quietly. "But you are choosing what happens next."

His words landed deeper than she expected. She glanced at Lena—pale, shaken, clearly terrified, yet still by her side. Fear warred with something stronger in Lena's eyes. Loyalty. The knowledge twisted Emily's gut.

"I never wanted you caught up in this" Emily said softly.

Lena's head shook firmly. "Too late for that." A fragile smile trembled on her lips. "You think I'd just walk away?"

Emily's throat constricted. "I don't even understand what's happening to you" Lena continued, voice wavering. "But I know you. And this"—her gesture took in the shadows, the tension…"you won't face it alone."

Emily stared at her, really looked. For the first time that night, power wasn't her only companion. Emotions surged, fear, guilt, gratitude, all knotted together. "You should be scared," Emily finally said.

"I am" Lena admitted.

"Then why are you still here?" Emily asked.

Lena paused, then whispered, "Because you are."

The answer struck Emily harder than any blow. She didn't deserve that loyalty—not anymore. "You're not the only one changing" Lena added gently. "And I'm not leaving."

Emily looked away, afraid that if she didn't, she'd break.

Another crack sounded. Her mate faltered for a fraction of a second—just enough for her to feel it. Her body moved before her mind caught up, she stepped forward. The shadows obeyed instantly, twisting around her.

"Stay back," he ordered, not even glancing her way.

She stopped but his command felt hollow. "You don't get to tell me that," she said softly.

He finally turned to her, his eyes conflicted. "Do you think I want this?" he asked.

"Then stop acting like you have the right," she replied. Her words were sharp, unforgiving. Regret flickered across his face, then vanished.

"This isn't about rights," he said quietly. "It's about keeping you alive."

Emily let out a bitter sigh. "I was alive before you decided I wasn't worth saving."

Silence fell. Even the fight backed off. The second man hung back, watching. The taller one stayed silent, studying her. Emily's heart thundered again—not from fear or power, but from everything she'd left unsaid.

"You don't get to come back and pretend you care," she said, her voice steadier now but no less raw. "Not after what you did."

His jaw clenched. "I didn't reject you because I didn't care."

"Then why?" she demanded.

He didn't answer. That silence cut deeper than any sword. Emily shook her head. "Right. That's what I thought."

He stepped forward, slow and deliberate. "You're asking the wrong question."

Her eyes snapped to his. "Then ask the right one."

He met her gaze steadily. "Why did you survive?"

The question fell over her like a weight—inescapable, crushing. Her breath stuck in her throat. She didn't have an answer. And that terrified her more than anything.

The shadows around her wavered, uncertain, as if echoing her doubt. The man's expression softened just a fraction. "That's what you should fear" he said quietly.

Behind her, Lena's hand squeezed hers. "Emily…" she whispered.

Emily didn't move. Deep inside, she knew something was wrong…not just with them, not just with the power, but with herself. And the worst was that part of her no longer wanted to resist. It wanted the answer.
