Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Public Variable

The school didn't return to normal.

That was impossible.

By the next morning—

Everyone knew.

"…did you see what happened?"

"…the scaffolding collapsed."

"…someone got trapped."

"…two students helped—"

Names spread quickly.

"…Jared."

"…and that new guy—Evan."

Jared walked through the hallway.

Eyes followed.

More than before.

Different this time.

Not curiosity.

Recognition.

"…hero," someone whispered.

"…reckless," another said.

Jared didn't react.

Attention level: critical.

"…this is bad," Iris muttered beside him.

"…confirmed."

"…no, I mean REALLY bad."

"…clarify."

She gestured around.

"…everyone is watching you."

Jared already knew.

Visibility increased.

Risk increased.

"…temporary," he said.

"…STOP SAYING THAT."

Her voice cracked again.

Jared paused.

Looked at her.

She looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

"…you almost got crushed," she said quietly.

"…did not."

"…THAT'S NOT THE POINT."

Silence.

"…you jumped in without thinking," she continued.

"…incorrect."

"…Jared—"

"…calculated risk."

A pause.

"…you could've died."

Jared didn't answer.

Because—

That variable had been considered.

And accepted.

Iris looked at him.

Long.

Then shook her head.

"…I don't recognize you anymore."

That—

Landed differently.

Jared paused.

Identity drift detected.

But he didn't respond.

Because he didn't have an answer.

Across the hallway—

Evan stood.

Watching.

Not hidden.

Open.

Their eyes met.

No words.

Just understanding.

System escalation confirmed.

Evan walked over.

"…they're accelerating," he said quietly.

"…confirmed."

"…this wasn't just a test."

"…no."

A pause.

"…it was exposure," Evan added.

Silence.

Jared processed it.

Public visibility increased.

Pressure applied externally.

"…they want reaction," Jared said.

"…and now they have it," Evan replied.

Iris looked between them.

"…can someone explain in normal language?"

"…they're making it harder to stay hidden," Evan said.

"…and easier to break," Jared added.

Silence.

That answer—

Didn't help.

Then—

Footsteps.

The professor approached.

But his expression—

Was different.

Not neutral.

Concerned.

"…both of you," he said, looking at Jared and Evan.

"…principal's office."

Silence dropped again.

Iris stiffened.

"…that's not good."

"…confirmed."

Jared stepped forward.

Evan followed.

Because now—

The system wasn't the only thing watching.

The school was involved.

And that—

Made everything more dangerous.

As they walked—

Whispers followed.

Louder.

"…they're in trouble."

"…they caused it."

"…or saved people."

Two narratives.

Both spreading.

Jared's mind processed it all.

Public perception: unstable.

Control: decreasing.

And for the first time—

The pressure wasn't just internal.

It was everywhere.

Hallways.

Students.

Teachers.

All variables—

Uncontrolled.

Jared stepped into the office.

Evan beside him.

And behind them—

Iris.

Still there.

Despite everything.

The door closed.

And whatever came next—

Wouldn't stay contained anymore.
