Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Administrative Interest

The principal's office was too quiet.

That was the first detail.

No papers on the desk.

No clutter.

No distractions.

Environment: controlled.

Jared stepped inside.

Evan followed.

Iris hesitated—

Then entered anyway.

The door closed behind them.

"…sit," the principal said.

His voice was calm.

Measured.

Too measured.

Jared sat.

Evan did the same.

Iris stayed standing.

"…I prefer standing," she said.

The principal glanced at her.

"…noted."

He didn't insist.

Unusual.

Silence stretched.

Then—

"…yesterday's incident," the principal began.

"…was unfortunate."

A pause.

"…but revealing."

Jared's eyes shifted slightly.

Word choice: intentional.

"…you acted," the principal continued, looking at Jared.

"…under pressure."

Then at Evan.

"…and you observed."

Silence.

"…both approaches have value," he said.

Iris frowned.

"…people almost got hurt."

"…they did get hurt," the principal corrected calmly.

That—

Shifted the tone.

Jared analyzed him carefully.

Emotional response: none.

Tone: neutral.

"…why are we here?" Evan asked.

Direct.

Efficient.

The principal leaned back slightly.

"…because," he said,

"…your actions attracted attention."

A pause.

"…not just from the school."

Silence.

Jared didn't move.

But inside—

Confirmation.

"…we've received recommendations," the principal continued.

"…for both of you."

Iris blinked.

"…recommendations for what?"

The principal didn't look at her.

"…advancement."

The same word.

Again.

Jared's thoughts aligned instantly.

System involvement confirmed.

"…define advancement," he said.

A faint smile appeared.

"…an opportunity," the principal replied.

"…insufficient explanation."

"…expected," the principal said calmly.

Silence.

Then—

He opened a drawer.

Took out two envelopes.

Placed them on the table.

"…inside," he said,

"…are instructions."

A pause.

"…and an invitation."

Evan didn't hesitate.

Picked his up immediately.

Jared didn't.

He looked at it.

Unknown variable.

Potential risk.

"…take it," Iris whispered.

"…analysis pending," Jared replied.

"…Jared—"

"…if it was harmful," he said,

"…it would not be optional."

The principal watched that exchange.

Closely.

"…you assume you have a choice," he said quietly.

Silence.

That—

Was new.

Jared picked up the envelope.

Decision point.

He opened it.

Inside—

A single card.

Black.

Minimal.

Three words.

"Level Two Begins."

Below it—

A location.

And a time.

Jared's eyes narrowed slightly.

Evan had already read his.

"…same," he said.

Of course.

Iris stepped closer.

"…what does that mean?"

Neither of them answered.

Because they understood.

This wasn't school anymore.

This was something else.

The principal stood up.

"…attendance is expected," he said.

A pause.

"…absence will be noted."

Silence.

Then—

"…dismissed."

Just like that.

They stood.

Walked toward the door.

But before Jared left—

He stopped.

Turned slightly.

"…you're part of it," he said.

Not a question.

The principal smiled faintly.

"…I manage variables," he replied.

Silence.

Jared understood.

Even here—

Inside the school—

The system existed.

Everywhere.

He stepped out.

Iris followed.

"…I don't like this," she said.

"…irrelevant," Jared replied.

"…STOP saying that."

But this time—

He didn't correct her.

Because now—

Something had changed.

The game was no longer hidden.

And the next phase—

Wouldn't be contained.
