Chapter 1 - The Interview

The elevator ride to the 28th floor

felt longer than it should have.

Evelyn adjusted her blazer for the

third time, staring at her reflection in the polished metal walls. Calm face.

Steady breathing. Ignore the pounding in your chest.

"This is just an interview," she

whispered to herself.

But it wasn't just anything.

Aurelian Group wasn't a company people

casually applied to. It was the company—powerful, influential, and rumored to

be as ruthless inside as its CEO.

The elevator dinged.

The doors slid open to silence so

clean it felt expensive.

The reception area was all glass,

marble, and intimidating beauty. Even the air smelled like control.

"Good morning," the receptionist said

with a practiced smile. "Name?"

"Evelyn Adebayo. I'm here for the

executive assistant interview."

The receptionist's expression

shifted—just slightly.

"Of course. Please, have a seat."

That of course didn't feel welcoming.

It felt like a warning.

Ten minutes later, Evelyn was led down

a hallway so quiet her heels sounded too loud.

They stopped in front of a door.

The assistant leaned in slightly.

"Just so you know… he doesn't like mistakes."

Evelyn blinked. "Who?"

The assistant gave her a look.

"The CEO."

Her stomach tightened.

Before she could respond, the door

opened.

"Go in."

The office was massive—but that wasn't

what froze her.

It was him.

Adrian Cole stood by the window, back

turned, hands in his pockets as he looked out over the city. Tall. Still.

Controlled.

He didn't turn immediately.

Didn't acknowledge her.

For a full five seconds, Evelyn stood

there, unsure if she was supposed to speak.

Then—

"You're late."

His voice was low. Calm.

Cold.

Evelyn frowned slightly. "No, I'm

not."

That got his attention.

He turned.

And suddenly, the rumors made sense.

Adrian Cole wasn't just handsome—he

was intense. The kind of man whose presence pressed against your chest.

Sharp jaw. Dark eyes. Expression

unreadable.

He looked at her like he was already

evaluating whether she was worth his time.

"The interview was scheduled for

10:00," he said.

"It's 9:58."

A pause.

His gaze flicked to his watch.

Then back to her.

Something shifted—just slightly.

"Most candidates arrive early."

"I did," she said. "I was asked to

wait."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Evelyn held his gaze, refusing to

shrink.

For a moment, the room felt like a

test.

Then—

"Sit."

She sat.

He didn't.

Instead, he walked around the desk

slowly, like he had all the time in the world.

"Why do you want this job?"

Straight to the point.

"Because I'm qualified," she said.

"That's not an answer."

Evelyn tilted her head slightly. "It's

the honest one."

His eyes narrowed—just a fraction.

"Honesty is rare in interviews."

"So is asking real questions."

Silence.

Then—

He smirked.

It was brief.

Gone almost immediately.

But Evelyn saw it.

And something in her chest tightened

in a way she didn't like.

Adrian finally sat down, folding his

hands.

"Your resume is impressive," he said.

"Top of your class. Previous experience in high-pressure environments."

"I don't panic easily."

"We'll see."

His gaze dropped briefly to the file,

then back to her.

"Working for me isn't easy."

"I didn't apply for easy."

Another flicker of something in his

eyes.

Interest.

Dangerous interest.

"What's your weakness?" he asked.

Evelyn didn't hesitate.

"I don't tolerate disrespect."

Silence.

Heavy this time.

Adrian leaned back slightly.

"And if that disrespect comes from

your employer?"

Evelyn met his gaze directly.

"Then we'll have a problem."

For the first time since she walked

in—

He looked genuinely intrigued.

Not amused.

Not dismissive.

Interested.

Like she had just stepped into a space

no one else dared to enter.

The air shifted.

Something invisible.

Something neither of them named.

Adrian closed the file slowly.

"You're not what I expected."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Is that a

bad thing?"

He studied her.

Long enough to make most people

uncomfortable.

But she didn't look away.

Didn't fidget.

Didn't shrink.

Finally, he said—

"Report here tomorrow. 7 a.m."

Evelyn blinked.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

"You're not going to ask more

questions?"

"I already have my answer."

"And what is it?"

A pause.

Then—

"You won't break easily."

Evelyn stood, picking up her bag.

"Good," she said. "Because I don't

plan to."

She turned to leave—

"Miss Adebayo."

She stopped.

Looked back.

Adrian's gaze held hers.

Sharp.

Unreadable.

But something in it had changed.

"Don't make me regret this."

Evelyn gave a small, confident smile.

"Don't give me a reason to."

And just like that—

She walked out.

Adrian sat in silence for a long

moment after the door closed.

Then, quietly—

He exhaled.

"Interesting."
