Chapter 1 - I killed him

Ikilled him.

His lifeless eyes stare back at me.

The malice is gone now — like it was never real. Just a mirage… of a face I once loved.

A few hours before the incident

"Your bills are outstanding. Please connect with your supplier immediately before the water supply is cut off."

Susan stared at the message, her chest tightening.

It was always something — some bill, some due, some reminder that life was slipping through her fingers.

Two jobs still weren't enough. Every rupee she earned vanished the moment she reached home… like it was never hers to begin with.

Four years since she married her high school love.

Three years since she discovered the truth — he was a junkie, living from one high to the next.

Nothing had been the same since.

Slaps. Kicks. Punches.

Even eye contact could set him off.

She worked as a Taekwondo teacher in the mornings and a swimming instructor at a local gym in the evenings.

Exhausting?

Yes.

But exhaustion helped. It numbed everything — the pain, the people, the truth.

Shit.

She checked the time.

Late.

It would take her 45 minutes to walk home.

The moment she stepped inside, the smell hit her.

Smoke.

White powder scattered across the table.

And there he was — sprawled, disheveled, lost in himself.

It was the usual drill.

She placed her bag on the table.

He lunged for it like his life depended on it.

Because it did.

He found nothing.

Not a single rupee.

The first blow came fast.

Then another.

Curses flew between hits.

His hand wrapped around her neck.

They stumbled toward the balcony.

For the first time… fear gripped her.

She tried to push him away.

But he was different today.

Empty.

No hesitation. No control. Just… malice.

She kicked his knee.

Hard.

His grip loosened.

For a second — just a second — his balance slipped.

And then—

He fell.

"No… no, no, no…", Her voice broke as she rushed forward.

She looked down.

His body lay twisted, unnaturally still.

His eyes… wide open.

"Please… get up… please…"

She ran downstairs, her legs trembling.

Her fingers pressed against his neck.

Nothing.

No pulse.

"I… I killed him."

Her breath quickened.

Her mind spiraled.

What happens now?

Where do I go?

They'll find him… they'll find me…

Anywhere.

Anywhere but here.
