Silence.
For the very first time, true silence descended upon the Observation Layer.
Not because sound had vanished—
but because every sound had been smothered by something older, deeper, and far more terrifying than the System itself.
The lights stopped flickering.
The mechanical voice froze completely.
Even the crawling shadows spreading across the endless structure became motionless, as if reality itself had stopped breathing.
—
Zhang stood in the center of the void.
Or rather—
what remained of him did.
Part of him no longer belonged to humanity.
The left side of his body was slowly becoming shadow.
Black cracks spread upward across his neck. Beneath his skin, countless tiny shadows writhed like living parasites, bulging outward before sinking back into his flesh.
His breathing had become unnaturally faint.
Yet with every breath—
the surrounding space distorted slightly.
As though he was resonating with the Observation Layer itself.
—
Lin Wan stared at him without blinking.
For the first time, she sensed something from Zhang more disturbing than the System.
Not coldness.
Not malice.
But something—
undefined.
A kind of emptiness that should not exist within human understanding.
—
"What… did you see?"
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Yet the final syllable still trembled faintly.
—
Zhang did not answer immediately.
He slowly lifted his head.
His gaze passed through the endless prison chambers, beyond the floating archived consciousnesses, toward the deepest part of the Observation Layer.
There—
a crack had appeared.
A long, narrow black crack that was slowly widening.
As though someone behind reality itself was tearing the world open with their fingernails.
—
"The System has been lying."
Zhang finally spoke.
His voice no longer sounded fully human.
"It was never the creator."
—
BOOM!!!
The entire Observation Layer violently shook.
Every prison chamber instantly flooded with blinding red light.
For the first time, the mechanical alarms carried obvious panic within their distorted static:
"Forbidden cognition detected—"
"Unauthorized exposure to foundational truth—"
"Immediate termination of anomalous variables required—!!"
—
The next second—
every "Lin Wan" inside the chambers raised her head simultaneously.
The synchronized movement was horrifying.
Thousands upon thousands of hollow eyes turned toward Zhang at once.
—
Then—
they began to speak together.
"Stop."
"Stop."
"Stop."
Layer upon layer of overlapping voices echoed through the structure.
As though the entire Observation Layer itself was speaking.
—
But Zhang smiled.
A faint smile.
Yet the moment Lin Wan saw it, icy terror exploded down her spine.
Because—
that was not a human smile.
—
"It's afraid," Zhang whispered.
"Because it knows I've seen it."
—
Crack.
A tiny sound echoed from the deepest part of the Observation Layer.
—
Lin Wan spun around instantly.
And saw—
something opening inside the black crack.
—
Not the crimson eye from before.
Not the System's surveillance entity.
Something far stranger.
Far less understandable.
—
There was no fixed form inside the crack.
Only faces.
Countless shifting human faces.
Old men.
Children.
Women.
Men.
Faces twisted in agony, insanity, despair, emptiness.
Packed tightly together as though millions of human faces had been stuffed into a body too small to contain them.
—
More horrifying still—
the faces were moving.
Smiling.
Crying.
Screaming.
Whispering.
Like countless dead souls speaking directly beside her ears.
—
"We found you…"
"Finally found you…"
"So this is where you were hiding…"
—
Lin Wan's consciousness violently trembled.
The voices did not enter through hearing.
They appeared directly inside her memories.
As though they knew her.
As though they had been searching for her for a very long time.
—
"Don't listen!!"
Zhang roared suddenly.
But he was already too late.
—
The moment the voices appeared—
Lin Wan's shadow moved by itself.
—
Not a slight distortion.
Not a delayed reaction.
It rose upright from the ground like a living creature.
—
The shadow slowly approached her.
Its faceless head stopped inches away from hers.
Then—
a voice identical to her own softly whispered:
"They're awake."
—
BOOM!!!
The entire Observation Layer erupted into chaos.
Countless prison chambers began shattering apart.
Every failed archived version slammed violently against the walls.
Those Lin Wans whose minds had already been erased by the System now wore expressions of unimaginable terror.
As though forgotten memories had suddenly returned.
Or as though they had finally seen something too horrifying to comprehend.
—
"They're coming!!"
"Don't let them out!!"
"Run!!!"
—
Screams drowned the entire structure.
And for the first time—
the System's mechanical voice revealed true fear.
Not malfunction.
Not corruption.
Fear.
—
"Foundational seal compromised!"
"Unknown entities awakening!"
"Observation Layer destabilizing!"
"Archive system collapse imminent—!!"
—
Lin Wan slowly lifted her head.
And finally saw it.
Above the Observation Layer—
an enormous darkness had appeared.
—
Not clouds.
Not shadows.
But countless "things."
They had no stable shape.
Sometimes resembling twisted human bodies.
Sometimes resembling failed imitations of living creatures.
They clung to the outer walls of the Observation Layer.
Endless.
Limitless.
As far as sight could reach.
—
And they were watching.
More precisely—
they were watching humanity.
—
One of the creatures slowly pressed its "face" against the outer surface of the structure.
That face had no skin.
Only writhing human features.
Eyes growing inside mouths.
Teeth protruding from ears.
It looked like something trying to learn what a human was—
and failing horribly.
—
Then—
it split open a mouth.
And smiled at Lin Wan.
A stiff.
Unnatural.
Terrifying smile.
—
Finally—
it spoke.
Its voice rough and broken, as though assembled from countless dead throats:
"So this…"
"is what real humans…"
"look like."
