Jane reached out instinctively and placed a hand against Jack's head as his body swayed from the force of the previous attack. For a moment, he looked as though he might lose his balance completely and fall to the ground.
Her heart tightened.
"Wu, Jack, are you all right?"
Jane hurried toward him. She had just watched him get struck by an enormous burst of dark-red energy, and although Jack had always behaved as though nothing in the world could hurt him, seeing him thrown away like that had frightened her more than she wanted to admit.
Jack slowly straightened his body and brushed away the dust from his clothes.
"I was all right."
Jane immediately frowned.
"You are really hateful. You suddenly do something like that without warning. If something happened to you, what would I do?"
Her voice carried both anger and worry. She was angry because Jack had frightened her, but beneath that anger was an even stronger emotion she did not want to acknowledge.
Jack looked at her and smiled.
"If I died like this, you would become a widow. Relax, I will not make you work as a widow."
Jane stared at him.
"A dog's mouth cannot put out ivory."
"I am not a dog. Moreover, a dog's mouth cannot put out ivory. What kind of dog would that be?"
Jack shrugged innocently.
Jane almost rolled her eyes.
Even after being attacked by such terrifying power, this fellow still had the mood to joke around.
Her expression became slightly worried again.
"What do I do now? I don't want to die so young. That would really be unfair."
For the first time, there was genuine fear hidden beneath Jane's words. She was a scientist. She had spent most of her life trying to understand the unknown, but being personally exposed to something capable of destroying her body was completely different.
Jack looked at her seriously.
"Jane, put your heart at ease. How could I possibly let you die?"
His tone was firm enough that Jane's anxiety eased slightly.
"But didn't you have the means a moment ago? If I died, you wouldn't accompany me in death together."
Jack raised a hand.
"I promised you, Jane. If you died, I would accompany you together…"
Jane immediately placed her hand over Jack's mouth.
"Don't talk nonsense. We will not die. I believe you, ah…"
She quickly withdrew her hand when she felt Jack deliberately kiss her palm.
Jane's face immediately turned red.
"Your this hooligan."
Jack gave her an evil smile.
"It doesn't matter. Being a hooligan in Jane's eyes is one of my happiness."
"The mouthful of sweet talk. You are good at deceiving female children."
Jane tried to look annoyed, but the corners of her lips betrayed her.
She hated to admit it, but Jack's shameless sweet talk was effective.
The more he behaved like this, the harder it was for her to maintain the cold attitude she wanted.
Jack simply smiled at her without saying anything.
Jane eventually looked into his eyes.
"You said you were with Pepper."
"Yes."
Jack's expression became slightly serious.
"I did many wrong things to Pepper. I must make up for the mistakes I made. Therefore, I must give her happiness."
Jane immediately made a disgusted expression.
"Good disgusting feeling. These words coming from your mouth only make a person feel that they are very false."
Jack's expression changed.
"Fine. The father is opening a harem. Is saying it like this okay?"
Jane narrowed her eyes.
"Do you want me to work as the third one?"
"No. You absolutely are not the third one."
Jane blinked.
"Eh?"
Jack smiled.
"Because there are also the fourth, fifth, sixth…"
He deliberately paused.
"You should be before the tenth."
"Jack!"
Jane clenched her teeth and reached toward his waist, pinching him ruthlessly.
"How do you not die?"
Jack quickly moved her hand away.
"Don't be excited. Don't be excited. I was only joking."
Jane glared at him.
"Then what do you want? You have improper relations with so many women."
The joking expression disappeared from Jack's face.
He looked directly at Jane.
"Jane, listen to me. In my eyes, you are the same. There is no third, fourth, or fifth. You are my woman. You are the first. Anyone who wants you to leave me can forget about it."
Jane's expression became complicated.
The answer should have made her happy.
Instead, she felt helpless.
"The fellow of your heart is really greedy."
She lowered her eyes.
"I don't care. I don't care. If you cannot make everyone satisfied, that is your matter."
Jack smiled.
"I will make all of you satisfied."
His confidence was almost ridiculous.
Jane shook her head.
"You cannot deceive me in any case again. You cannot leave me again. Otherwise, I am not foolish enough to wait for you."
Jack gently held Jane's face.
"Jane, you suffered hardships."
Jane's expression softened.
"Therefore, you must treat me well. I chose to follow you, so I have to say goodbye to everything in the past. Perhaps I will be reviled by ten thousand people. After all, you are Humankind's Public Enemy."
She paused.
"But I don't care."
Jack looked at her seriously.
"Jane, you can rest assured. I will certainly make you the happiest woman in the world."
"Really? If you can achieve it, I will not let you off."
Jane smiled.
Jack suddenly remembered something.
"You and that Richard, what's the matter?"
Jane froze.
"Richard? How do you know him?"
"How I know isn't important. You answer my question first."
"Don't misunderstand. There is nothing between me and him. We can only be acquaintances."
Jane immediately explained herself. She was afraid Jack might misunderstand.
Jack raised an eyebrow.
"Really?"
"How were you having lunch together? I must kill that fellow."
Jane stared at him.
"How do you know? Are you tracking me?"
Jack's expression was completely shameless.
"On this world, there is no matter that I do not know. That fellow was eating a meal with Jane unexpectedly. He has no need to live in this world."
Jane grabbed his arm.
"You keep killing people. It isn't always necessary to think like that."
Jack looked at her.
"Then which appearance is that?"
"Listen to me. My mother lives in London. I came to London partly to study and partly to see her. But she insists on finding a partner for me. She really appreciates Richard and keeps trying to bring me and Richard together."
Jane sighed.
"I found it annoying, but I had no choice except to humor her."
Jack nodded.
"I understand. So that is what happened."
His eyes suddenly brightened.
"Since my mother-in-law is in London, I must visit her."
Jane's expression immediately changed.
"You are crazy. She may lose control from the shock. Her daughter is looking for Humankind's Public Enemy as her boyfriend. She will be frightened to death."
Jack shrugged.
"You have some truth there. It seems I have no way to visit her. This is really regrettable."
"Don't mess around. If you really want to help me, what is happening with that particle in my body?"
Before Jack could answer, a thunderous voice suddenly descended from the sky.
"Jack!"
The peaceful atmosphere instantly shattered.
A thick bolt of lightning tore through the clouds.
BOOM!
The lightning struck downward with terrifying speed, illuminating the entire area for an instant.
Jane's eyes widened.
Jack calmly reached out and pulled her into his arms.
With his other hand, he raised his palm toward the sky.
The lightning struck directly into his hand.
Electricity crackled around his body, making sharp sounds as bright arcs of energy danced across his fingers and arms.
Jane stared in disbelief.
Jack, however, looked completely relaxed.
He turned around.
"Thor. I never thought I could see you again. I also thought you died in the New York war."
Another rumble of thunder echoed through the sky.
A massive figure descended from the clouds.
The familiar hammer was in his hand, and lightning surrounded his body.
Thor.
The God of Thunder.
Thor landed heavily, his eyes immediately locking onto Jack.
"Jack, you bastard. You brought the Tesseract. That isn't your thing."
Jack raised an eyebrow.
The corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
"So you came all the way here for the Tesseract?"
Thor tightened his grip around Mjolnir.
The atmosphere became tense.
Jane stood beside Jack, still trying to process everything that had happened.
Only a short while ago, she had been worried about the strange power inside her body. Now she was standing beneath a stormy London sky while the God of Thunder confronted the most dangerous man on Earth.
Her scientific mind desperately wanted to understand everything.
But another part of her simply wanted to stay beside Jack.
Thor looked at Jane.
"Jane Foster."
Jane blinked.
"You know me?"
Thor's expression softened for a moment before returning to seriousness.
"Of course."
Jack glanced between them.
"Thor, don't scare my woman."
Jane immediately looked at him.
"Who is your woman?"
Jack ignored her.
Thor's eyes narrowed.
"Jack, return the Tesseract to Asgard."
Jack smiled.
"If you want it, come and take it."
A strong wind swept across the lakeside.
The clouds above them churned violently, thunder rumbling in the distance.
Jane could feel the pressure in the air becoming heavier.
Thor slowly raised Mjolnir.
Jack's expression remained calm.
Invisible Thought Power quietly spread through the surrounding space.
Neither man intended to retreat.
Jane looked at Jack's back.
For some reason, despite standing in front of the God of Thunder, she felt strangely safe.
Jack had always been reckless.
He was arrogant, shameless, greedy, and completely unreasonable.
But when danger appeared, he always stood in front of her.
That was perhaps the most frightening thing about him.
And also the reason she could not stop herself from caring about him.
Thor's eyes flashed.
"Jack!"
Jack smiled.
"Come."
The next moment, thunder exploded across the London sky.
The God of Thunder and Humankind's Public Enemy stood facing each other beneath the storm, while Jane stood between science, magic, and a world that had long since stopped following the rules she once understood.
