Chapter 27 - Chapter 26: The Venomous Vine

The tranquil facade of the ninety-day reprieve shattered not from an external assault by the Imagawa, but from a sudden, venomous rot within the Oda clan's own borders.

In the southern district of Owari, guarding the critical border castles of Narumi and Sakuma, sat Yamaguchi Noritsugu and his son, Yamaguchi Noriyoshi.

They were veteran retainers who had long chafed under Nobunaga's radical centralization policies.

To them, Subaru Ryu's new land surveys and the Rakuichi Rakuaza laws were not progress—they were a direct threat to their traditional feudal autonomy.

With the Imagawa temporarily frozen by the Takeda marriage negotiations, the father and son saw a golden, desperate window to switch allegiances.

[COVERT DETECTOR ALERT: INTERNAL FACTION MUTATION]

[FACTION: YAMAGUCHI RETRAINERS (NARUMI CASTLE)]

[LEADERS: YAMAGUCHI NORITSUGU (POL: 64) & NORIYOSHI (ATK: 71)]

[TREASON STATUS: ACTIVE SECESSION & COLLUSION WITH IMAGAWA]

[TARGET CAPTURE VALUE: HIGH TIER LADY OICHI (NOBUNAGA'S STRATEGIC SISTER)]

Inside his administrative bureau at Nagoya Castle, Subaru Ryu's system interface suddenly flared a violent, flashing crimson.

His newly updated physical balance hummed, a sharp intuition gripping his chest as he decoded the alert.

The Yamaguchi clan wasn't just planning to defect to the Imagawa; they were looking to deliver a supreme hostage to Sunpu to guarantee their high status in Yoshimoto's court:

Nobunaga's younger sister, the famously beautiful Lady Oichi.

Late that afternoon, Lady Oichi's small, heavily guarded palanquin was traveling along the quiet bamboo highway between the Atsuta Shrine and the inner ring of Nagoya.

She had been performing traditional prayers for the province's longevity, escorted by a mere dozen local garrison guards.

Suddenly, from the thickets of the bamboo grove, a volley of crossbow bolts ripped through the air, instantly felling the front escorts.

"Form a ring!

Protect Lady Oichi!" the vanguard commander screamed, but before he could draw his blade,

a coordinated wave of over fifty heavily armed rogue samurai—bearing no banners but moving with professional military precision—slammed into the caravan.

At the rear of the ambushers rode Yamaguchi Noriyoshi, his face twisted in a cold, opportunistic grin.

"Do not harm the lady!

Drag her out of the carriage!

With her in our hands, Nobunaga will hand over Narumi Castle on his knees!"

"Release me!

Traitors!" Oichi's voice, sharp and defiant despite her youth,

rang out from the splintered palanquin as two heavy hands dragged her into the mud.

"Move!

To the Mikawa border before Nagoya realizes—"

"You are going nowhere, Noriyoshi."

A calm, chillingly precise voice cut through the rustling bamboo.

Emerging from the southern bend of the road was Subaru Ryu, riding a black stallion, flanked by Takigawa Kazumasu and thirty elite Horoshū cavalrymen.

Thanks to his recent investment of 8 unallocated points into LEAD (55) and DEF (53), Subaru no longer looked like a fragile scholar.

His posture was grounded, and his tactical presence radiated a heavy, authoritative pressure that forced the rogue samurai to hesitate.

"The Chief Strategist?" Noriyoshi spat, his horse backing away.

"How...

how did you calculate this path?"

"Your father's secret letters to Taigen Sessai were intercepted three nights ago," Subaru said, his 91 INT colder than the autumn wind.

"You thought the smoke from Kiyosu had blinded us. But your ledger has already been balanced, Noriyoshi.

Kazumasu, execute the protocol."

"With pleasure," Takigawa Kazumasu muttered, his shadow-like form blurring as he plunged into the enemy formation.

[TACTICAL MODIFIER ENFORCED: ARCHITECT OF THE EMPTY NEST]

[ENEMY MORALE CRIPPLED: -15% OVERALL EFFICIENCY]

[TACTICAL RESOLUTION: SUCCESSFUL HOSTAGE RESCUE]

Subaru's aura anchored the Horoshū cavalry, who systematically cut down the panic-stricken Yamaguchi conspirators.

Subaru himself spurred his horse forward, drawing a short, functional blade to parry a stray spear thrust with his enhanced physical reflexes, before Kazumasu's men completely overwhelmed the remaining kidnappers.

Within minutes, Noriyoshi was thrown into the dirt, heavily bound in iron chains, while Subaru knelt beside the shaken but uninjured Lady Oichi, offering his indigo cloak to cover her torn robes.

When the news of the thwarted kidnapping and the Yamaguchi treason reached the inner chambers of Nagoya Castle, the reaction was not an explosion of Nobunaga's masculine fury, but a silent, terrifying manifestation of feminine malice.

In the master reception hall, Lady Kichō sat on the high tatami dais.

Nobunaga was away inspecting the northern grain reserves, leaving her in full command of the castle's internal security.

The physical reports of the defection lay torn across the floorboards.

Her sharp 92 INT and high political bloodline flared.

The Yamaguchi had not just committed treason; they had violated the domestic sanctuary she had sworn to protect, targeting a innocent woman under her direct watch.

"Bring him in," Kichō commanded, her voice dropping to a terrifying, deathly whisper that made even veteran samurai in the room break into a cold sweat.

Guards dragged the blood-stained, bound Yamaguchi Noriyoshi onto the lower wooden floor.

Despite his chains, the foolish young commander spat onto the wood.

"Kill me then, woman!

My father has already handed Narumi Castle to the Imagawa garrison!

The monk Sessai will aveng—"

"Silence," Kichō cut him off.

She did not rise from her cushion.

She slowly picked up her father's heirloom dagger—the coiled viper blade—and held it up against the candlelight.

"You think your father is safe inside Narumi Castle?" Kichō whispered, her eyes wide, burning with an absolute, venomous madness that mirrored her father, Saito Dōsan.

"You think the Imagawa will protect a rat who sells his own blood for a few extra bags of rice?

You targeted my sister-in-law.

You brought the stench of your petty treachery into my household."

She looked over at Takigawa Kazumasu, who stood silently in the shadows.

"Kazumasu.

Take this piece of filth," Kichō ordered, her voice completely devoid of human warmth.

"Cut off his right hand—the hand that dared to touch Oichi's robes.

Box it nicely in cedar wood, and send it directly to his father at Narumi Castle.

Tell Yamaguchi Noritsugu that if he does not surrender the keys to the castle gates by tomorrow's twilight, I will personally roast his son's flesh and feed it to the stray dogs of Nagoya."

Noriyoshi's face drained of all color, his arrogant bravado instantly collapsing into a pathetic, high-pitched scream as the guards dragged him backward out of the hall.

Subaru Ryu stood at the edge of the room, watching Kichō breathe heavily as she gripped the small dagger.

The system interface before his eyes slowly recalibrated, mapping the brutal efficiency of her internal purge.

[DOMESTIC COUNTER-PURGE EFFECTIVENESS: MAXIMUM]

[YAMAGUCHI REBELLION POTENTIAL: CRIPPLED]

[POLITICAL CONSEQUENCE: THE ODA CLAN'S INTERNAL DISCIPLINE HIGHEST IN SEVEN DECADES]

Kichō turned her sharp eyes toward Subaru, her anger slowly receding into a cold, appreciative exhaustion.

"You did well, Subaru.

If you had been a moment later, the Oda clan's honor would have been dragged through the mud of Suruga."

"Kazumasu shadow's tracks the anomalies, My Lady," Subaru replied softly, bowing his head.

"The Yamaguchi thought the peace window made us weak.

They forgot that a unified Owari means there is no longer any dark corner left for rats to hide."

The internal rot had been cut out with a jagged, merciless blade.

As the night fell, Subaru looked down at the maps of the southern border.

The ninety days of peace were still ticking away, but the blood spilled today proved that the road to Muraki Castle would be paved with absolute, uncompromising terror.
