Taste a Lesson
The front door clicked shut behind me, leaving me alone with the echo of my own steps. It was nearly midnight. On any other night, my father would've been pacing, waiting to interrogate me. But tonight was different. Tonight was my engagement night.
Yet something was already wrong.
From the living room came the low, venomous roar of my father's voice. Underneath it, I heard Lilith's broken sobs, ragged and desperate.
I stood frozen. The cool night breeze and the quiet hum of Dafa's motorcycle seemed like fading memories replaced by the thick, suffocating tension of home.
"...an utter disgrace!" my father's voice thundered. "What were you thinking. Throwing yourself at Lev? While your own sister was about to become his wife?"
"I didn't throw myself!" Lilith cried, her voice cracking. "She didn't want him! Why shouldn't I..."
A sharp crack sliced the air. Everything stilled.
My breath hitched.
