Chapter 44 - [44] End of the Match

The gym buzzed with anticipation as the young teams faced off for the second set. The air was charged with energy as Izumi stepped up to the service line for the opening serve. His teammates watched with bated breath, knowing the importance of a strong start.

'This is it, the first serve. I've got to set the tone for the set.'

He took a deep breath, his eyes locked on the opponent's court. He knew that the first serve could set the tone for the entire match.

'Then let's start this set with a bang.'

He sent the ball into the air, and with a fluid and powerful motion, he struck the ball with the perfect amount of topspin. It rocketed over the net, spinning rapidly as it sailed.

Skauaroka's back row players scrambled, trying to gauge the ball's trajectory, but the speed and spin made it a formidable challenge.

The ball's downward trajectory was deceiving, and before they could react, it touched down just inside the back line, kissing the floor with precision.

[1-0]

The crowd erupted in cheers as the referee signaled an "ace.".

"YOSHHHHH!"

"Nice serve" "let's Gooo"

After that Izumi went to serve again but this time Sakuraoka managed to bump it, and it didn't take Ushijima too long to score Sakauaroka's first point

And that was the bringing soon Skauaroka took the lead with Ushijima on the front, overpowering blockers with his incredible strength.

"Touch" yelled Izumi as he managed to gaze the spike.

The ball went back words where Riku received but didn't able to control it and it went twords Izumi instead of Yuki— whom he intended to pass.

'let's see what can I do!' thought Izumi his eyes both on the ball and the sorroundings.

Izumi had something special in mind for this play, a play that could catch the blockers off-guard.

'The blockers have been focusing on Hideki on the left in last couple of plays, I need to keep them guessing'

As Izumi received the pass, he quickly assessed the defense. The opposing blockers were keenly watching Hideki's every move, preparing to jump and block his attack.

Izumi's hands met the ball, and with precision, he set it high and slightly off the net. Hideki readied himself for a powerful approach.

'It's coming'

Hideki made his approach, and as he thought he reached the ball, he realised that the ball's trajectory was different than what he thought. The ball was a little bit forward then he is used to be he swang his hands regardless, but only his fingertip touched the ball.

So when he spiked it, it was more like he tapped it gently over their outstretched hands, into the vacant space in the court.

The opposing blockers, Midori and Ken, leaped to block Hideki's attack, but to their surprise, the ball sailed over their fingertips and landed untouched.

[16-19]

'What just happened? I was sure he was going for the hard spike.'

'I couldn't react in time. Was that a dink?'

The gymnasium erupted in cheers as the ball hit the floor on the opponent's side.

'That's a point!'

The second set proved to be a challenging one for Rixe as Sakuraoka displayed a strong defense and adaptability. While Rixe managed to make some impressive plays and narrow the point gap at times, they couldn't quite catch up to Sakuraoka's lead.

As the set drew to a close, Rixe found themselves facing a 21-25 scoreline, with Sakuraoka securing the victory for that set.

On the sidelines, the Rixe players huddled together, their faces reflecting a mix of determination and concern.

"They've pretty much adapted to all of our attacks," Yuki noted.

"Well, except Miyamura's, that is," Riku added.

"We gotta change some stuff. Coach, what should we do?" Yuki asked, seeking guidance.

Coach Endou stepped forward, addressing the team, "Alright, team, we're in a tight spot, and the Raging Storm has figured out our usual plays. But remember, we've trained for this. We need to adapt, just like we've done in practice."

The team nodded in agreement, ready to regroup and adjust their strategy for the upcoming set, determined to turn the tide in their favor.

"We should try to create more confusion in their blocks. Sets from different angles might do the trick," suggested Izumi.

"But for that, we need to dig Ushijima's spikes effectively and set up strong transition attacks," Yuki added.

"What about mix-ups? We can try mixing our attacks," Riku chimed in.

The team discussed these suggestions and formulated a new strategy.

"Great ideas, team. Yuki, start using quick sets from varied positions. Zaza, focus on disrupting their blocks. Uru, you're our defensive anchor. Keep reading their plays. Riku, change up your attacks and keep them guessing, and Miyamura-Kun, play as you usually do."

As the timeout ended, Rixe's players returned to the court with renewed determination, ready to execute their adjusted strategy. The crowd could feel the shift in momentum, and the game was back on with an air of anticipation.

The beginning of the third set was positive for Rixe, with their new adjustments, they managed to take an early lead.

Izumi played a crucial role in this, thanks to his flexibility in setting. He created numerous opportunities for his teammates to spike, and his deceptive setting techniques confused the opponents' blockers, leading to easier scoring opportunities for Rixe.

However, Sakuraoka quickly adapted to this change in Rixe's strategy. They switched to one-on-one defense, with the center blocker being flexible to support others. This adjustment managed to shrink Rixe's once 6-point lead to just 2, making it a closely contested set.

[17-15]

"To the right!" yelled Riku while waiting for the ball to come toward him.

Listening to his call, Izumi set the ball to him a little bit close to the net. With a well-timed jump, Riku smashed the ball but was blocked by Sakuraoka's middle blockers.

'Shit.'

Izumi reacted quickly, saving the ball from touching the ground. Yuki set the ball back to Izumi, who, with a half-jump, sent the ball towards the right corner of Sakuraoka, scoring a point.

[18-15]

"Thanks for the save there," Riku said.

"No worries, let's focus on the next point," replied Izumi.

"They were able to block me this time. Looks like they've caught up to our strategy again," Riku observed.

"Yeah, so let's be a little defensive and try to hit them with quick counters," Izumi suggested.

"Agreed," Riku responded.

And they did hit them with counters, bringing the score to [22-21].

It was Yuki's turn to serve, and he precisely sent the ball to the back row of Sakuraoka, where they managed to pass the ball to their setter, Kouhei.

"Tanukai-Kun" called out Kouhei

As Kouhei set the ball to the left hitter, Izumi was already in the air with his arms up, ready to make a crucial block.

*Thwack*

And that was a block.

[23-21]

"Nice block!" The crowd cheered as Rixe's players celebrated their successful defense.

Next, it was Riku's turn to serve, but Sakuraoka managed to get a point back.

With a well-executed set from Kouhei, Ushijima unleashed a powerful cross-court shot from right to left that left Rixe's defense in shambles.

[23-22]

"Don't worry, gather up, guys. We will take the next point," Izumi encouraged his teammates, keeping their spirits high.

Next, it was Kouhei's turn to serve for Sakuraoka. He stepped up to the service line with determination, and the gym fell silent, anticipating his serve.

*Whiirrrl!*

Kouhei's serve was powerful and well-placed, making it challenging for Rixe to receive. The ball sailed over the net and landed perfectly inside Rixe's court.

The Rixe players made an effort to receive the serve, but it resulted in a shaky pass, creating an opportunity for Sakuraoka to launch a swift attack.

"Watch out, guys!" Izumi shouted, trying to prepare his team for what was coming next.

Sakuraoka seized the chance, and Ushijima, as their primary attacker, approached the net with a determined look in his eyes. Kouhei set the ball perfectly for him, and Ushijima jumped, ready to spike it.

The Rixe blockers jumped to defend, but Ushijima's powerful spike proved challenging to stop. The ball thundered down and hit the floor on Rixe's side, scoring a point for Sakuraoka.

[23-23]

In the heat of the game, it was now again Kouhei's turn to serve. And he send the ball twords Hideki.

With anticipation hanging in the air, Hideki prepared to pass the ball towards Yuki. But little did he know, Kouhei had something up his sleeve – a devious spin that caught Hideki off guard.

'shit'

Hideki muttered under his breath as he struggled to control the ball. Despite his best efforts, it slipped through his fingers, making its way back to Sakuraoka's side.

'damn it's going to there side'

However, Izumi, wasn't about to let that happen without a fight.

With a jump resembling that of a determined rabbit, Izumi found himself right by the ball. His thoughts raced as he pondered what he could do in this crucial moment.

"Let's see what I can do form here" he thought with fierce determination. With all the strength he could muster, Izumi swung at the ball, sending it hurtling through the air.

*Bam* *bam* *thud*

The ball made contact with the opponent's middle blocker's hands, then gracefully descended onto Sakuraoka's side of the court.

[24-23]

"Rixe— Match Point"

The crowd erupted in cheers as the scoreboard told the tale of their hard-fought victory. The players shared triumphant smiles, knowing that every point brought them closer to their goal.

As the score stood at [24-23] in favor of Rixe the anticipation in the gymnasium was electric. Rin who was watching form the stands (second floor balcony of the gym) her feet, urging Rixe to secure the match.

'This is it. Concentrate,Izumi. A powerful, accurate spike is what we need.'

Izumi took a deep breath and stared at the court with unwavering determination. He'd trained for moments like these, and he knew that it all came down to this final attack.

The ball, set by Yuki was in the perfect position. The blockers of Skauaroka were ready to leap, their hands poised for a potentially game-saving block.

The entire gym seemed to go quiet for a split second. Izumi's powerful legs propelled him into the air. With incredible speed and precision, he swung his arm and sent the ball rocketing towards the opponent's court.

'We can't let this through!' though ran across the brain of the blockers.

They jumped in unison, creating a formidable wall of hands and arms. It was a crucial moment in the match, and the outcome hinged on their defense.

'This is it. One last spike'

With remarkable timing, Izumi executed a cross-court spike with breathtaking accuracy.

The ball whizzed past the blockers, just inches over their fingertips, leaving them stunned and unable to react in time.
