Chapter 35 - Ch.35: The Distance Between Them

Eleanor barely slept.

The photograph remained on her phone.

Raven without her mask.

You know who she is.

Now ask yourself why she came back.

The words had been designed to make her doubt everything.

But they had done something else.

They had reminded Eleanor of the first time she saw Raven's face.

The night at the penthouse.

Raven had been vulnerable.

Not the ruthless CEO everyone feared.

Not the mysterious woman behind the mask.

Just Raven.

And Eleanor had fallen for that woman.

She wasn't going to let an anonymous message change that.

Still, there was one thing she couldn't ignore.

Raven had never told her the truth.

And Eleanor had never told Raven that she already knew.

They were both keeping secrets.

---

The next morning, Eleanor arrived at Vance Capital Holdings earlier than usual.

Sebastian was already waiting outside her office with a stack of files.

"You look tired."

"I didn't sleep well."

He frowned.

"Is everything okay?"

Eleanor forced a smile.

"Just a lot on my mind."

Sebastian studied her for a moment but didn't push.

"Your nine o'clock meeting was moved to ten."

"Good."

"And there's something else."

Eleanor looked up.

"What?"

"Someone called asking for you."

"Who?"

"They wouldn't give a name."

Eleanor's expression changed.

"What did they say?"

Sebastian hesitated.

"They said they wanted to discuss your relationship with Raven."

Eleanor went still.

"Did they leave a number?"

"No."

"Good."

Sebastian nodded.

Eleanor walked into her office and closed the door.

She stared through the glass wall for several seconds.

Someone wasn't just watching Raven.

They were trying to get to her.

And that frightened her more than she wanted to admit.

---

Across the city, Raven sat in her office.

Andrea stood before her.

"We found the security company."

Raven looked up.

"Who owns it?"

"A holding company registered outside Illinois."

"Who owns that?"

"Three shell corporations."

Raven sighed.

"Keep going."

Andrea placed another file on the desk.

"We followed the money."

Raven opened it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

One name appeared.

Vance.

Raven's expression changed.

"Eleanor?"

Andrea shook her head.

"No."

Raven looked at her.

"Then who?"

"We haven't confirmed it yet."

Raven closed the file.

"Find out before anyone else does."

Andrea nodded.

But she didn't leave.

"There's another problem."

Raven looked up.

"What?"

"Jeff."

Raven's eyes hardened.

"What about him?"

"He's been moving money."

"Where?"

"Blackwood Heights."

Raven leaned back.

"How much?"

"Enough to make us concerned."

Raven's expression became cold.

"Keep watching him."

Andrea nodded.

"And don't touch him."

"Not yet?"

"Not yet."

Raven's eyes moved toward the photograph of her mother on the desk.

"Jeff knows something."

---

That afternoon, Eleanor received a message.

Raven:

Are you free tonight?

Eleanor stared at the screen.

Her heart softened despite everything.

She typed.

Eleanor:

For you? Always.

The reply came quickly.

Raven:

I'll pick you up at eight.

Eleanor smiled.

Then hesitated.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.

She could ask Raven.

She could ask about the photograph.

About her identity.

About why she came back.

But something stopped her.

She wanted Raven to tell her herself.

Not because someone had forced the truth out of her.

Eleanor placed the phone down.

"Tonight," she whispered.

"Tonight I'll ask."

---

Eight o'clock came.

Raven arrived exactly on time.

When Eleanor stepped outside, Raven's expression immediately softened.

"You look tired."

Eleanor smiled.

"So do you."

Raven opened the car door.

"Long day."

"For both of us."

Raven looked at her.

There was something different in Eleanor's voice.

Something she couldn't quite identify.

"Is something wrong?"

Eleanor shook her head.

"Not yet."

Raven frowned slightly.

"What does that mean?"

Eleanor smiled.

"I'll tell you later."

Raven didn't push.

She simply started the car.

---

They drove through the city in silence for a while.

Eleanor watched Raven's hands on the steering wheel.

She remembered their first kiss.

The hill.

The stars.

The way Raven had told her she'd never brought anyone there before.

Eleanor wondered how much of that had been true.

"Raven?"

"Yes?"

"Do you trust me?"

Raven glanced at her.

"With my life."

Eleanor's heart tightened.

"Then why don't you tell me things?"

Raven went quiet.

"What things?"

"Things about yourself."

Raven looked back at the road.

"I've told you a lot."

"Not everything."

"No."

Eleanor swallowed.

"Why?"

Raven's fingers tightened slightly around the steering wheel.

"Because some parts of my life aren't safe."

Eleanor looked at her.

"Are they dangerous?"

"Yes."

"Would knowing them put me in danger?"

Raven didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Yes."

Eleanor looked away.

The answer confirmed what she had feared.

Raven was protecting her.

But she was also shutting her out.

---

Raven eventually pulled into a quiet private parking area.

Eleanor looked around.

"Where are we?"

"Somewhere we can talk."

They stepped out of the car.

The night air was cool.

Raven turned toward Eleanor.

"You've been different since yesterday."

Eleanor's heart raced.

"Have I?"

"Yes."

Raven stepped closer.

"Tell me what's wrong."

Eleanor looked into her eyes.

She wanted to ask.

She wanted to tell her everything.

Instead, she whispered,

"I'm scared."

Raven immediately softened.

"Of me?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Eleanor looked away.

"Of losing you."

Raven's expression changed.

She reached for Eleanor's hand.

"You're not losing me."

Eleanor looked back at her.

"Promise?"

Raven squeezed her hand.

"I promise."

For a moment, Eleanor almost told her.

Then her phone vibrated.

Both women looked down.

Unknown number.

A single message appeared.

Ask her about the night her mother died.

Eleanor's face went pale.

Raven noticed.

"What is it?"

Eleanor locked her phone.

"Nothing."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Eleanor."

"It's nothing."

But Raven knew her too well.

Something was wrong.

And somewhere in the darkness, someone was watching them.

Someone who knew exactly which secrets to reveal.

To be continued…
