Chapter 39 - Ch.39: The Vance Brothers

Eleanor's arms remained around Raven for several seconds before she finally pulled away.

Raven studied her face.

Something was different.

Eleanor was trying to hide something.

Raven knew her well enough now to recognize it.

"You're still worried," Raven said.

Eleanor looked away.

"My mother told me something tonight."

Raven's expression immediately became serious.

"What?"

Eleanor hesitated.

She remembered her mother's warning.

Don't tell Raven yet.

But she also remembered Raven's promise.

Trust me.

"My father and my uncle were involved with people connected to the Blackwood Circle."

Raven went completely still.

She had suspected Mark.

She knew about Adrian.

But hearing Eleanor say it made everything feel different.

"Did your mother tell you anything else?"

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"She said they were involved years ago."

"Did she say what they were doing?"

"No."

Raven studied her.

"Did she mention my mother?"

Eleanor's silence was enough.

Raven's jaw tightened.

"She did."

"Yes."

Raven looked away.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Eleanor reached for her hand.

"I don't know what my family did, Raven."

"I know."

"I don't want you to think I'm part of it."

Raven immediately looked at her.

"I don't."

"You're not angry?"

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't angry."

Eleanor's heart sank.

"But not at you."

Raven squeezed her hand.

"Whatever your father and uncle did, it isn't yours to carry."

Eleanor's eyes softened.

"Thank you."

Raven leaned closer.

"But Eleanor…"

"Yes?"

"If your family knows something about my mother, I need the truth."

"I'll help you find it."

Raven nodded.

"Together."

---

Across town, Mark Vance sat in his private study.

Adrian stood beside the bar, pouring himself a drink.

Neither man had spoken since Sofia confronted them earlier.

Finally, Mark broke the silence.

"She told Eleanor."

Adrian slowly turned.

"What?"

"Sofia told her about the Circle."

Adrian's expression darkened.

"You were supposed to handle Sofia."

"I did."

"Clearly, you didn't."

Mark slammed his hand against the desk.

"Don't speak to me like that."

Adrian stared at him.

"You're forgetting who protected you when Ellen Hale died."

Mark's face changed.

"Careful."

"You're forgetting who moved the properties."

"I said careful."

"And you're forgetting who ordered the surveillance."

Silence filled the room.

Mark looked toward the door.

"Keep your voice down."

Adrian smiled coldly.

"After all these years, you're finally afraid?"

Mark stared at him.

"I am not afraid."

"You should be."

Adrian placed his glass down.

"Raven has opened the basement."

Mark's expression changed.

"She found it?"

"Yes."

"Does she know?"

"Not everything."

Mark exhaled slowly.

"And Eleanor?"

"She knows enough to become a problem."

Mark walked toward the window.

For years, he had believed the past would remain buried.

He had helped make sure of it.

But Raven had returned.

And now his daughter was in love with the very woman whose family he had helped destroy.

"This cannot continue," Mark said.

Adrian looked at him.

"What are you suggesting?"

Mark turned.

"Separate them."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"And if they refuse?"

Mark's voice became cold.

"Then we remind Raven what happens when she gets too close to the truth."

---

Back at the Vance estate, Sofia stood alone in the hallway.

She had heard everything.

Her face was pale.

She knew exactly what Mark and Adrian were capable of.

And she knew something they didn't.

Eleanor was no longer the frightened little girl they could protect with lies.

She had become powerful.

Independent.

And, more importantly—

she had Raven.

Sofia looked toward the window.

She could see Raven's car disappearing into the distance.

"I'm sorry, Eleanor," she whispered.

"I should have told you years ago."

---

Raven drove home in silence.

Her thoughts were racing.

Mark.

Adrian.

Ellen.

The Blackwood Circle.

The basement.

Eleanor.

She couldn't ignore the connection anymore.

Her phone rang.

Andrea.

Raven answered.

"Tell me."

"We searched further into Mark Vance's history."

Raven's grip tightened around the steering wheel.

"And?"

"He wasn't simply a business associate of your mother."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"What was he?"

Andrea paused.

"According to the records, Mark and Adrian both had positions within the Blackwood Circle."

Raven's heart dropped.

"Both of them?"

"Yes."

"What's their connection to my mother?"

"We're still investigating."

Raven stared ahead.

"And the masked woman?"

Andrea went quiet.

"We found something."

"What?"

"There are records suggesting she worked directly with Mark and Adrian."

Raven's blood ran cold.

"Who is she?"

"We don't know."

Raven ended the call.

She had spent years believing Jeff was the man responsible for destroying her life.

Now she was beginning to understand that Jeff had only been a piece of something much larger.

And Mark Vance had been there.

Adrian Vance had been there.

Her mother had trusted them.

Or perhaps she had been forced to work with them.

Raven didn't know.

But she would.

---

The following morning, Eleanor walked into Vance Capital Holdings.

Sebastian was waiting for her.

"Good morning."

"Morning."

He handed her a folder.

"Your nine o'clock meeting is ready."

Eleanor nodded.

Then stopped.

"Sebastian?"

"Yes?"

"Did anyone ask about me yesterday?"

He hesitated.

"One person."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Eleanor's expression changed.

"What did they look like?"

Sebastian lowered his voice.

"Older man. Expensive suit. Very calm."

"Did he give a name?"

"No."

Eleanor's phone suddenly vibrated.

She looked down.

A message from Raven.

I need to see you.

Eleanor smiled faintly.

Then another message arrived.

And Eleanor... don't trust anyone in your family until I know what's happening.

Her smile disappeared.

She stared at the screen.

For the first time, Raven was warning her about her own family.

And somewhere in the Vance estate, Mark and Adrian were already making their next move.

To be continued…
