Chapter 37 - Ch.37: The Name in the File

Raven remained completely still after Andrea's words.

Someone connected to her mother's inner circle had ordered the surveillance.

She looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor was still standing across from her, her confession hanging between them.

Because I fell in love with you.

Raven had imagined hearing those words from Eleanor.

Just not like this.

Not while the past was suddenly closing in around them.

"Send me everything you have," Raven told Andrea.

"I will."

"And Andrea?"

"Yes?"

"Don't make a move yet."

There was a brief silence.

"Understood."

Raven ended the call.

Eleanor watched her carefully.

"Is it bad?"

Raven slipped her phone into her pocket.

"It might be."

"Because of me?"

Raven immediately shook her head.

"No."

Eleanor stepped closer.

"Then because of your mother?"

Raven's expression changed.

"How much do you know?"

Eleanor hesitated.

"Not enough."

Raven studied her.

"And that's what scares me."

Eleanor reached for her hand.

Raven looked down at their fingers.

"You don't have to tell me everything today," Eleanor said softly. "But don't shut me out."

Raven looked into her eyes.

"I won't."

For a moment, the tension disappeared.

Raven leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss against Eleanor's forehead.

"I believe you."

Eleanor smiled faintly.

"Good."

---

Later that evening, Raven returned to Apex Raven Global.

Jane was waiting in her office with a thick black folder.

"Andrea sent this."

Raven took it.

"Did she say anything?"

"She said you should look at it alone."

Raven frowned.

She opened the folder.

The first pages contained financial records.

Then surveillance reports.

Then photographs.

Raven turned another page.

Her mother's name appeared repeatedly.

Ellen Hale.

Raven's fingers froze.

There were records dating back more than ten years.

Meetings.

Payments.

Properties.

Names.

Then she saw one particular name highlighted in red.

Mark Vance.

Raven stared at it.

Vance.

Eleanor's family.

Her heart began pounding.

"No…"

Jane noticed her expression.

"What is it?"

Raven didn't answer.

She turned another page.

There was a photograph.

Ellen Hale standing beside Mark Vance.

They were outside the same building Raven had just searched.

And behind them stood the mysterious masked woman.

Raven stared at the photograph.

Her mother's secret wasn't just connected to Eleanor's family.

It went back years.

Before Raven had even known Eleanor existed.

Jane spoke carefully.

"Raven?"

Raven closed the folder.

"Get Andrea."

---

Andrea arrived twenty minutes later.

Raven placed the photograph on the desk.

"What does this mean?"

Andrea studied it.

"We're still verifying the records."

"Who is the woman?"

"We don't know."

"And Mark Vance?"

Andrea looked at Raven.

"We found several financial transfers between his company and an organization associated with your mother's network."

Raven's expression hardened.

"Why didn't I know about this?"

"Because the records were buried."

"By who?"

"We don't know."

Raven stood.

"Find out."

Andrea nodded.

Then Raven added,

"And nobody tells Eleanor."

Andrea looked at her.

"Raven—"

"I said nobody."

She wasn't protecting Eleanor from the truth.

She was protecting her from a truth that hadn't been verified yet.

But deep down, Raven knew something had changed.

The woman she loved might be connected to the mystery surrounding her mother.

And she didn't know whether that connection would bring them closer—

or tear them apart.

---

Across the city, Eleanor sat in her father's old study.

She had been thinking about Raven all evening.

About the way Raven had looked at her after she confessed.

There had been surprise.

Fear.

But not rejection.

Eleanor smiled.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from her mother.

Sofia:

Darling, are you free tomorrow? I want you to come home for dinner.

Eleanor frowned.

Her mother rarely sounded that serious over text.

She replied.

Eleanor:

Of course. Is everything okay?

The response came several minutes later.

Sofia:

There are things about your father's past that I think you're old enough to know.

Eleanor's smile disappeared.

Her father's past.

She stared at the message.

For some reason, Raven immediately came to mind.

Then another message appeared.

Sofia:

And Eleanor... please don't tell Raven.

Eleanor's heart stopped.

She slowly lowered the phone.

Why would her mother mention Raven?

And what did her father have to do with her?

---

The following morning, Raven received a call.

Andrea's voice was unusually quiet.

"We found something."

Raven sat upright.

"What?"

"The person who ordered the surveillance."

"Who?"

Andrea hesitated.

"We traced the payment to an old account."

"And?"

"It belonged to someone who worked closely with Sophia Hale."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Give me the name."

Andrea took a breath.

"Dr. Adrian Vance."

Raven froze.

"Vance?"

"Yes."

"Who is he?"

Andrea's voice lowered.

"Eleanor's uncle."

Raven stared into the distance.

Eleanor's uncle.

A member of her mother's inner circle.

The man connected to the surveillance.

The same family that had apparently shared secrets with Sophia Hale.

Raven slowly stood.

"Find everything on Adrian Vance."

Andrea replied,

"Already working on it."

Raven looked toward the photograph of her mother on her desk.

Then toward the city.

For the first time, she wondered whether falling in love with Eleanor had been a coincidence.

Or whether their families had been connected long before they ever met.

And somewhere in the Vance family home, Sofia was preparing to tell Eleanor a secret that could change everything.

To be continued…
