The night in Italy felt unusually quiet.
Raven stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of Vanessa's villa, staring at the city below.
The lights blurred beneath her tired eyes.
Too many truths had surfaced in too little time.
Vanessa was not simply Aunt V.
She was her mother.
The mysterious masked organization wasn't hunting her.
It had been protecting her.
And Ellen had known far more than Raven had ever imagined.
Eleanor stood several feet away, watching her.
She didn't interrupt.
She knew Raven needed the silence.
Behind them, Vanessa remained near the desk, looking through the old photographs she had kept hidden for years.
Finally, Raven spoke.
"Tell me about her."
Vanessa looked up.
"Ellen?"
Raven nodded.
"I want to know who she was before I lost her."
Something softened in Vanessa's expression.
"She was stubborn."
Raven gave a faint smile.
"That sounds familiar."
Vanessa smiled.
"She was also kind. More than people realized."
She picked up an old photograph.
"Ellen could walk into a room full of people who hated each other and somehow make them listen."
Raven stepped closer.
"What about me?"
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
"You were everything to her."
"And to you?"
Vanessa's eyes met hers.
"Everything."
The answer was immediate.
Raven looked away, fighting the emotion rising in her chest.
"You watched me grow up."
"Yes."
"You watched me become who I am."
"Yes."
"And I called you Aunt V."
Vanessa nodded.
"That was the safest name for you to use."
Raven's voice became quieter.
"Did you ever want me to call you Mom?"
Vanessa looked down.
"Every day."
Raven's eyes filled with tears.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because if the wrong people discovered that I was your mother, you would have become their greatest target."
Eleanor finally stepped closer.
"So the masks…"
Vanessa nodded.
"Were part of the protection."
"The organization belonged to you?"
"Yes."
Raven turned toward her.
"The organization from the beginning?"
Vanessa nodded.
"The same one you thought was trying to take control of Blackwood Heights."
Raven stared at her.
"And those people at the private club?"
"My people."
Raven's expression hardened.
"They knew who I was?"
"Some did."
"Why didn't they tell me?"
"Because they were following my orders."
"What orders?"
Vanessa's gaze softened.
"Never reveal my identity to Raven unless I gave permission."
Raven exhaled slowly.
"All those years…"
Vanessa nodded.
"I was there."
---
Raven walked toward the desk.
She picked up another photograph.
It showed Ellen and Vanessa standing together.
Raven was between them as a little girl.
Vanessa's hand rested gently on Raven's shoulder.
Raven stared at the image.
"You always looked at me like this."
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Like what?"
"Like I was the most important person in the world."
"You were."
Raven looked at her.
"I remember something."
Vanessa immediately became attentive.
"What?"
"You used to sit beside my bed when I couldn't sleep."
Vanessa smiled.
"I did."
"You told me stories."
"Yes."
"And you called me…"
Raven paused.
"Little Raven."
Vanessa's eyes became glassy.
"You remembered."
"Just a little."
Vanessa stepped closer.
"I used to wish you would remember everything."
Raven swallowed.
"I think I finally want to."
---
Eleanor noticed a folder on the desk.
"What's that?"
Vanessa's expression changed.
She reached for it.
"Something Ellen left behind."
Raven immediately took it from her.
"Why haven't I seen it?"
"Because I wasn't sure whether it was safe."
Raven opened it.
Inside were several documents.
Property records.
Names.
Dates.
And eventually, one document bearing the Hale family seal.
Raven frowned.
"What is this?"
Vanessa looked over her shoulder.
"That is the custody agreement."
"Custody?"
"After Ellen died, you were supposed to come to me."
Raven's eyes widened.
"I was?"
"Yes."
Vanessa pointed to the document.
"Ellen arranged it before her death."
Raven read the first page.
Her name was clearly written.
Raven Hale.
Then Vanessa's name.
Vanessa Richard.
Raven's hands trembled.
"You were legally supposed to take care of me?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you?"
Vanessa's expression darkened.
"Because the document disappeared."
Raven looked up.
"What?"
"The original was taken before I could reach it."
"By who?"
"I never found out."
Raven continued reading.
There was a second document attached.
Her eyes narrowed.
"This one says the agreement was cancelled."
Vanessa nodded.
"That document is a forgery."
Eleanor stepped closer.
"How do you know?"
"Because Ellen never cancelled the agreement."
Raven looked at the signature.
"But it looks real."
"It isn't."
Vanessa pointed toward the bottom.
"The seal."
Raven examined it.
"What about it?"
"It was William Hale's private seal."
Raven's expression changed.
"My grandfather?"
"Yes."
"But if it has his seal…"
"Someone had access to it."
Silence filled the room.
Raven looked at Vanessa.
"Are you saying my grandfather was involved?"
"No."
Vanessa's answer was firm.
"William loved Ellen. He loved you. I don't believe he would have taken you away from me."
"Then who used his seal?"
"That is what I've spent years trying to discover."
Raven closed the folder.
"Who knew about the custody agreement?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"Ellen."
"Obviously."
"William."
Raven nodded.
"Anyone else?"
"Andrew knew Ellen had made arrangements."
Raven's expression tightened at the mention of Andrew.
"But he didn't know everything."
"Jeff?"
"No."
Vanessa shook her head.
"Jeff was a child. He knew nothing about what was happening."
Raven looked down.
She had spent years believing Jeff was her stepbrother.
Now even that part of her childhood felt complicated.
But Vanessa noticed her expression.
"Raven."
She looked up.
"Jeff isn't your enemy."
"I know."
"He is not responsible for Andrew's choices."
"I know."
Vanessa reached for her hand.
"You don't have to carry everyone else's sins."
Raven squeezed her fingers.
"I just wish people had told me the truth."
Vanessa's eyes softened.
"So do I."
---
Later that evening, Raven stood alone on the balcony.
Eleanor joined her.
"You okay?"
Raven looked at the city.
"No."
Eleanor leaned against the railing beside her.
"Want to talk?"
Raven shook her head.
"Not yet."
Eleanor nodded.
She didn't push.
After a moment, Raven reached for her hand.
"Stay."
"I wasn't planning to leave."
Raven smiled faintly.
Then her phone vibrated.
Andrea.
Raven answered immediately.
"Tell me."
Andrea's voice was tense.
"We found something."
"What?"
"The original custody agreement."
Raven straightened.
"You found it?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
Andrea hesitated.
"Inside an old Hale storage facility."
Raven's eyes narrowed.
"Who had access?"
"That is the problem."
"Why?"
"Because the facility was sealed after Ellen's death."
Raven's grip tightened around the phone.
"Who opened it?"
Andrea was silent for several seconds.
Then—
"Someone used William Hale's private access code."
Raven froze.
"William is dead."
"I know."
"Then who has his code?"
"We don't know."
Raven looked toward Vanessa through the glass doors.
Vanessa had heard enough to understand something was wrong.
Andrea continued.
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
"The security footage from the night the file disappeared…"
Raven waited.
"Someone was wearing a silver mask."
Raven's eyes immediately moved toward Vanessa.
Vanessa's expression changed.
"No."
Raven lowered the phone.
"What?"
Vanessa walked toward her.
"That mask belonged to my organization."
Eleanor looked between them.
"Then someone inside your organization took the document."
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Yes."
Raven's voice became cold.
"Find them."
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
"I will."
"No."
Raven stepped closer.
"We will."
For the first time, Vanessa smiled.
Not Aunt V's careful smile.
Not the smile of a mysterious woman hiding in the shadows.
A mother's smile.
"My daughter."
Raven's eyes softened.
Then the phone vibrated again.
A message from Andrea appeared.
I found the identity of the masked person.
Raven opened it.
Her expression immediately changed.
Eleanor noticed.
"Who is it?"
Raven slowly lifted her eyes.
She couldn't speak.
Vanessa took the phone from her.
The name on the screen made Vanessa go completely still.
A name from Ellen's past.
A name Vanessa had believed was dead.
And beneath the name was one final message:
He knows Raven is your daughter.
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
"Get Raven out of Italy."
Raven stared at her.
"Why?"
Vanessa looked toward the dark horizon.
"Because the person who betrayed Ellen…"
She paused.
"…has finally found you."
To be continued…
