Chapter 55 - Ch.55: The Marriage

The name on Andrea's message remained on Raven's phone.

She stared at it without blinking.

Vanessa had gone completely still.

Eleanor noticed immediately.

"Vanessa?"

No answer.

"Vanessa."

She finally looked up.

"That name…"

Raven's voice was low.

"You know him."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

"Who is he?"

Vanessa looked at Raven for several seconds.

Then she said quietly,

"Someone Ellen trusted."

The words settled heavily in the room.

Raven looked back at the message.

"Then tell me everything."

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not tonight."

Raven's eyes hardened.

"You don't get to do that anymore."

"Raven—"

"No."

She stepped closer.

"You spent my entire life deciding what I should know."

Vanessa remained silent.

"I understand why you did it," Raven continued. "I understand you were protecting me. But I'm not a child anymore."

Eleanor gently touched Raven's arm.

Raven took a breath.

"I deserve the truth."

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

For the first time, she didn't argue.

"You do."

She walked toward the sofa and sat down.

"Then you need to understand what happened after Ellen left me."

Raven sat opposite her.

Eleanor remained beside Raven.

Vanessa looked toward the window.

"Ellen believed I had betrayed her."

"She didn't know about the organization," Raven said.

"No."

"She thought you were involved with dangerous people."

"I was."

Raven frowned.

"Dangerous people?"

Vanessa nodded.

"But they were dangerous to my enemies, not to Ellen."

She paused.

"I built the organization because I knew powerful people were watching us."

"Because of me?"

"Because of all of us."

---

Years Earlier

Ellen stood in William Hale's office.

Her pregnancy was still a secret.

She had only recently discovered she was carrying Vanessa's child.

William watched his daughter carefully.

"You're certain?"

"Yes."

"And Vanessa?"

"She doesn't know."

William's expression hardened.

"You haven't told her?"

"No."

"Why?"

Ellen looked away.

"Because I don't know if I can trust her anymore."

William sighed.

"Then you need protection."

"I know."

"There is someone who can provide that."

Ellen looked at him.

"Who?"

"Andrew."

She frowned.

"Andrew?"

"He's respectable. Wealthy. His family has connections."

"I don't love him."

"You don't have to."

William's words were cold.

"You need security."

Ellen placed a hand over her stomach.

"I need to protect my child."

"And that's exactly what this marriage will do."

Ellen closed her eyes.

She hated the idea.

But she was afraid.

Afraid of Vanessa.

Afraid of the people following her.

Afraid of what would happen if anyone discovered the child she was carrying.

Finally, she nodded.

"Arrange it."

---

The wedding was quiet.

There was no romance.

No happiness.

Only an agreement between two families.

Andrew stood beside Ellen and smiled for the cameras.

But Ellen barely looked at him.

Her mind was somewhere else.

With Vanessa.

With the life she had walked away from.

And with the child growing inside her.

---

Andrew was not the husband William had promised.

At first, he appeared charming.

Then the lies began.

Late nights.

Missing calls.

Women.

Ellen eventually stopped asking questions.

She had Raven.

That was enough.

When Raven was born, Ellen's world changed.

She held her daughter against her chest.

A tiny hand curled around her finger.

Ellen smiled through tears.

"My little Raven."

She kissed her forehead.

"You're mine."

But deep down, she knew that wasn't completely true.

Raven belonged to Vanessa too.

---

Vanessa eventually discovered that Ellen had given birth.

She didn't approach her.

Instead, she watched from a distance.

That was when Aunt V was born.

Ellen allowed Vanessa into Raven's life under one condition.

"Never tell her."

Vanessa agreed.

So Raven grew up knowing Vanessa as her mysterious Aunt V.

Vanessa attended birthdays.

School events.

Family gatherings.

She gave Raven gifts.

She listened when Raven talked.

She protected her.

But she never once called herself her mother.

Not publicly.

Not even privately.

Because one wrong word could have put Raven in danger.

---

Present Day

Raven listened silently.

"You loved her the entire time."

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"Yes."

"Even after she married Andrew?"

"Especially then."

Raven frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I knew she didn't love him."

Vanessa looked down.

"And I knew she was unhappy."

Eleanor asked,

"What about Andrew?"

"He knew Ellen's heart belonged somewhere else."

"And he accepted that?"

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

"No."

Raven's expression hardened.

"What did he do?"

"He cheated."

"I know."

"He had another child."

"Jeff."

Vanessa nodded.

"Jeff was innocent."

Raven looked away.

"He didn't know."

"Neither did you."

Raven looked back.

"No."

Vanessa's expression softened.

"You and Jeff grew up believing you were step-siblings."

Raven nodded.

"But you weren't."

"No."

"You were never related by blood."

Raven swallowed.

"Does Jeff know?"

"No."

Raven's phone vibrated.

A message from Andrea.

Jeff is asking questions about Andrew's old records.

Raven stared at the screen.

Vanessa noticed.

"He's getting close."

"To what?"

"The truth."

---

Across the city, Jeff sat alone in an old office.

A folder lay open in front of him.

He had spent hours going through his father's records.

Something wasn't right.

There were missing documents.

Payments.

Private agreements.

And a name that kept appearing.

Ellen Hale.

Jeff frowned.

"What were you hiding?"

He turned another page.

Then froze.

A birth record.

Raven Hale.

He read it twice.

Then a third time.

His hands began to shake.

There was something strange about the information.

The dates didn't make sense.

The family records didn't match.

Jeff picked up his phone.

He called someone.

No answer.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Jeff answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

"Who is this?"

A distorted voice replied.

"Stop looking into your father's past."

Jeff's expression hardened.

"Who are you?"

"You don't want to know."

The call ended.

Jeff stared at the phone.

Then he looked back at the file.

Someone was afraid of what he would discover.

And that meant he was getting close.

---

Back at Vanessa's villa, Raven stood.

"I need to go back."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

"I'm not hiding."

"You're not hiding. You're staying alive."

Raven looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor stepped forward.

"She's right about one thing."

Raven raised an eyebrow.

"Which one?"

"We don't know who this person is yet."

Raven sighed.

"So what do we do?"

Vanessa looked at the old photograph of Ellen.

"We find out why Ellen trusted him."

"And why he betrayed her," Raven added.

Vanessa nodded.

"Exactly."

Suddenly, Vanessa's phone rang.

She answered.

A masked voice spoke rapidly.

Vanessa's face changed.

"Where?"

She listened.

"Don't move."

She ended the call.

Raven immediately noticed.

"What happened?"

Vanessa looked at her.

"Jeff found something."

"What?"

"The original marriage records."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"And?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"He found a document proving Andrew knew Ellen was carrying another person's child."

Raven froze.

Eleanor looked at her.

"Vanessa…"

Vanessa continued.

"He knew Raven wasn't his."

Raven's heart pounded.

"But Jeff?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"Jeff's records are different."

Raven frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa looked at her.

"It means Andrew knew the truth about Raven's parentage…"

She paused.

"…but he never told anyone."

Raven's voice became quiet.

"Why?"

Vanessa's expression darkened.

"Because he was using the secret to control Ellen."

Raven clenched her fists.

"What did he want?"

Vanessa looked toward the photograph of Ellen.

"Something your mother refused to give him."

"What?"

"The Hale inheritance."

Silence.

Raven's eyes hardened.

"So all of this…"

"Was connected to the Hale empire."

Vanessa nodded.

"And Ellen's death wasn't simply about me."

She looked at Raven.

"It was about what you would inherit."

Raven's expression became cold.

"Then Andrew wasn't just a cheating husband."

"No."

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"He was part of something much bigger."

A message suddenly appeared on Raven's phone.

From an unknown number.

You want the truth about Ellen?

Another message arrived.

Come to the old Hale estate alone.

Raven stared at the screen.

Then one final message appeared.

And bring the woman you call Aunt V.

Raven looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa's expression became deadly.

"They know we're together."

Eleanor stepped closer.

"Then we're not letting Raven go alone."

Vanessa looked at Eleanor.

"No."

Raven reached for Eleanor's hand.

"We go together."

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"Then tonight…"

She picked up her black mask.

"…we stop running."
