Chapter 56 - Ch.56: The Brother Who Betrayed Her

The old Hale estate stood in darkness.

Raven's black SUV stopped several meters away from the gates.

Eleanor stepped out first.

Vanessa followed.

Raven remained beside the vehicle for a moment, staring at the house where so many of her childhood memories had been created.

It looked smaller now.

Colder.

Almost unfamiliar.

Eleanor reached for her hand.

"You don't have to do this alone."

Raven looked at her.

"I know."

She squeezed Eleanor's hand.

"That's why you're here."

Vanessa watched them quietly.

There was something about the way Raven looked at Eleanor that reminded her painfully of Ellen.

The same trust.

The same vulnerability she rarely allowed anyone to see.

Vanessa looked away.

"Stay close."

Raven nodded.

They entered the estate.

The front door was already open.

Raven immediately reached for the weapon beneath her jacket.

Vanessa stopped her.

"Wait."

She studied the hallway.

"No guards."

"That's worse," Raven muttered.

Eleanor glanced around.

"They want us here."

"Yes."

Raven stepped inside.

The door closed behind them.

---

A light suddenly came on.

Jeff was sitting in the living room.

Raven stopped.

Her expression hardened immediately.

"Jeff."

He looked at her.

"Raven."

Eleanor moved closer to Raven.

Vanessa remained silent.

Jeff looked exhausted.

There were dark circles beneath his eyes, and several files were scattered across the table.

Raven's eyes moved toward them.

"You sent the message?"

"No."

"Then why are you here?"

Jeff stood.

"I found something."

Raven's expression remained cold.

"You've been finding a lot lately."

Jeff looked down.

"I know."

Raven stepped forward.

"Do you remember what you did to me?"

Jeff's expression changed.

"Yes."

"Good."

Eleanor glanced between them.

Jeff swallowed.

"I know you're angry."

"Angry?"

Raven gave a humorless laugh.

"You stole Bella from me."

Jeff looked away.

"You're right."

"You manipulated the situation."

"I know."

"You lied."

"I know."

"You used my trust against me."

Jeff closed his eyes.

"I know."

Raven's voice became colder.

"So don't stand there pretending you're some innocent victim because you've discovered your father's secrets."

Jeff looked at her.

"I never said I was innocent."

"Good."

Silence.

Then Jeff said quietly,

"I did something unforgivable to you."

Raven stared at him.

"And I have to live with that."

Vanessa watched him carefully.

"Then don't expect forgiveness simply because you're finally discovering the truth."

Jeff nodded.

"I don't."

---

Jeff picked up one of the files.

"I found records from before Raven was born."

Raven's expression changed.

"About Ellen?"

"Yes."

He handed her the file.

Raven opened it.

Inside were marriage documents between Ellen and Andrew.

She scanned them.

Then she saw another document.

Her eyes narrowed.

"What is this?"

Jeff pointed to the bottom.

"Read the signature."

Raven did.

Her expression changed.

"Andrew knew."

"Yes."

"He knew I wasn't his daughter."

"Yes."

"And he still married my mother."

Jeff nodded.

"There's more."

Raven turned the page.

A private agreement.

Ellen's name.

Andrew's name.

William Hale's name.

And Vanessa's.

Raven looked at Vanessa.

"What is this?"

Vanessa stepped closer.

Her eyes moved across the document.

Her expression hardened.

"It's the agreement Ellen created before she died."

Raven read aloud.

"'In the event of my death, Raven Hale shall remain under the protection of Vanessa Richard…'"

She stopped.

Her eyes filled with emotion.

"You were supposed to raise me."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

Jeff looked confused.

"Then why didn't she?"

Vanessa answered quietly.

"Because someone altered the agreement."

Jeff looked at the document.

"I found that too."

Raven looked at him.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

He picked up another file.

"But I found something else."

He opened it.

"There were two custody agreements."

Raven frowned.

"Two?"

"Yes."

"The first one gave Vanessa custody."

"And the second?"

Jeff's jaw tightened.

"The second transferred Raven's guardianship to Andrew."

Raven froze.

Vanessa's expression became dark.

"That document is fake."

Jeff looked at her.

"I know."

Raven stared at the page.

"Who signed it?"

Jeff pointed to the bottom.

"William Hale."

Raven's heart sank.

"Again?"

"Yes."

Vanessa shook her head.

"William would never have done this."

Jeff nodded.

"That's what I thought."

Raven looked at him.

"Then someone forged his signature twice."

"Exactly."

---

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa immediately moved in front of Raven and Eleanor.

Jeff reached for the weapon at his waist.

Raven whispered,

"Someone's here."

Footsteps echoed across the second floor.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Then a man's voice called from above.

"You always were stubborn, Raven."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Show yourself."

A man appeared at the top of the staircase.

Raven's blood ran cold.

Vanessa's entire body stiffened.

Eleanor whispered,

"Who is that?"

Vanessa's voice was barely audible.

"Andrew."

Raven stared at the man.

Andrew smiled.

"It's been a long time."

Raven's expression became murderous.

"You're supposed to be dead."

"I was supposed to be many things."

Andrew slowly walked downstairs.

Jeff stepped forward.

"Dad."

Andrew looked at him.

"Jeff."

"You knew."

Andrew smiled.

"Knew what?"

"That Raven wasn't your daughter."

Andrew looked toward Raven.

"I always knew."

Jeff's expression hardened.

"You lied to everyone."

"I protected what belonged to me."

Raven's voice cut through the room.

"I never belonged to you."

Andrew looked at her.

"You belonged to the Hale inheritance."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You never loved Ellen."

Andrew laughed.

"No."

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

"But Ellen loved you."

Vanessa's expression darkened.

"And you hated that."

"I hated what you represented."

Andrew descended the final step.

"You were the reason Ellen could never truly be mine."

Raven clenched her fists.

"You married her anyway."

"She was pregnant."

The room went silent.

Andrew looked at Raven.

"And I knew exactly who her mother was."

Eleanor's eyes widened.

"You knew Vanessa was Raven's mother?"

Andrew nodded.

"I knew from the beginning."

Vanessa's eyes became deadly.

"Then why didn't you expose me?"

"Because I had something better."

"What?"

"Leverage."

Andrew smiled.

"Ellen loved Raven more than she loved herself."

Raven's expression hardened.

"So you used me."

"Yes."

"And my mother?"

"She was trapped."

Vanessa stepped toward him.

"You destroyed her."

Andrew shrugged.

"She destroyed herself when she chose you."

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

Raven stepped between them.

"Don't."

Vanessa looked at her.

Raven's voice was cold.

"This is my fight too."

Andrew smiled.

"Just like Ellen."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"What happened the night she died?"

Andrew's smile disappeared.

"You really want to know?"

"Yes."

He looked at Vanessa.

"She arrived too late."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"I know."

Andrew continued.

"Ellen was already dying when Vanessa found her."

Raven's breathing became uneven.

"But you were there."

Andrew didn't answer.

Raven stepped closer.

"You were there."

Jeff looked at his father.

"Dad…"

Andrew ignored him.

Raven's voice became louder.

"You were there when my mother died."

"Yes."

Eleanor moved closer to Raven.

Raven's hands trembled.

"Did you kill her?"

Andrew stared at her.

Before he could answer, Jeff stepped forward.

"Dad."

Andrew looked at him.

"Stay out of this."

Jeff shook his head.

"No."

Andrew's expression hardened.

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

Jeff looked at Raven.

"I betrayed her once."

Raven's expression changed.

Jeff continued.

"I stole Bella from her. I lied to her. I made choices I regret every day."

He looked back at Andrew.

"But I'm not going to stand here and watch you destroy what's left of her family."

Andrew laughed.

"You think you're a hero now?"

"No."

Jeff's voice became firm.

"I know exactly who I am."

He turned toward Raven.

"And I know what I did to you."

Raven said nothing.

Jeff looked down.

"I'm sorry."

Raven's expression remained guarded.

"Sorry doesn't fix it."

"I know."

"Then don't ask me to forgive you."

"I won't."

He stepped aside.

"But I'll help you finish this."

Raven studied him.

For the first time, she saw something different in Jeff.

Not innocence.

Not redemption.

Just accountability.

She didn't forgive him.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But she understood that he had finally chosen a side.

---

Andrew suddenly pulled a weapon.

Vanessa moved instantly.

A shot rang through the room.

Raven pulled Eleanor down.

Glass shattered.

Jeff fired back.

Andrew disappeared behind the hallway.

Vanessa turned toward Raven.

"Stay here."

Raven shook her head.

"No."

Vanessa looked at her.

Raven's eyes were cold.

"You taught me how to survive."

She reached for her weapon.

"Now let me use it."

Vanessa stared at her daughter.

Then a small, proud smile appeared.

"Just like Ellen."

Raven nodded.

"Let's finish what she started."

From somewhere upstairs came Andrew's voice.

"You're too late."

Raven looked toward the staircase.

"What did you do?"

Andrew laughed.

"You should ask what I did to Ellen."

The lights suddenly went out.

Then a recording began playing through the estate.

Ellen's voice.

Frightened.

Whispering.

"Vanessa… if you're hearing this…"

Raven froze.

Her mother's voice filled the darkness.

"…then they already know aj. Wbout Raven."

Vanessa's eyes widened.

And Ellen continued:

"The person you trust most is the one who betrayed us."

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Raven slowly looked at Vanessa.

And for the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
