"Grah?"
At that moment, the young prince Garchomp returned to the original sand dune.
Seeing his mate disappear into the cave entrance, he let out a puzzled cry.
The Garchomp leader shot him a cold glance.
What are you looking at? This is all your own fault.
The young Garchomp instinctively shrank his head. Even though his father hadn't said anything, he could clearly feel the anger radiating from him.
After thinking for a moment, however, he simply pretended nothing had happened and flew over to another sand dune.
This time, he switched targets and started trying to flirt with a female Gabite.
Silas honestly thought it was a miracle the other male Garchomp in the clan hadn't beaten him up out of sheer embarrassment.
After all, the Garchomp clan had an almost perfect one-to-one ratio of males to females.
And in most cases, there were actually slightly more powerful male Garchomp than female ones.
After observing carefully, Silas noticed that, excluding the female who was most likely the leader's mate, there were four fewer female Garchomp than males in the clan.
The female Garchomp the young prince had been pursuing earlier was also the only single female Garchomp and she was clearly very popular.
Almost as soon as he left to greet his father, another male Garchomp had immediately approached her.
Perhaps it was simply an unspoken rule of courtship. As the clan's future leader, the young Garchomp hadn't tried to use his status to force his way in. Instead, he simply changed targets.
Unfortunately his new choice was rather baffling.
If both Zero's analysis and Silas's eyesight were correct, the Gabite he was trying to court had only evolved recently and was noticeably smaller than the others.
Standing nearly two meters tall, the Garchomp looked like a giant beside her.
The other male Garchomp hadn't ignored the Gabite during this time either, but the ones they approached all looked like they were close to evolving into Garchomp.
The clan leader understood the strange look in Silas's eyes.
Its expression darkened even further as it looked at its son.
Still, it didn't say anything more.
For wild Pokémon, having multiple mates for themselves or their offspring was perfectly normal.
The larger the number of offspring, the greater the chance that one would eventually surpass its parents.
That way, the clan never had to worry about lacking worthy successors.
The stronger the Pokémon species, the more common this was.
A powerful wild male Pokémon with only a single mate was actually quite rare.
Of course, there were also powerful female Pokémon that had multiple male mates.
For some Pokémon species, females were even stronger fighters than males.
The female Garchomp soon returned from the cave.
Flying over to Silas, she casually dumped the seven or eight Pokémon Eggs she had been carrying.
Several Gible Eggs, deep blue with light blue stripes and white tooth-shaped markings, tumbled across the sand, rolling several times before coming to a stop.
Without even giving them another glance, she simply returned to her resting spot and lay back down.
Silas was completely dumbfounded.
Seriously? That's way too casual.
While Pokémon Eggs were far sturdier than they appeared, most Pokémon handled their eggs with extreme care.
After all, they contained their unborn children.
The Garchomp leader, however, looked as though Silas was making a fuss over nothing and calmly pointed toward the Eggs.
"Grah."
Blaziken translated.
"If you choose one of the hatchlings, you only need the hatchling's own consent. But if you choose an Egg, then you must obtain permission from that Egg's parents."
Silas nodded.
That made perfect sense.
A Pokémon inside an Egg could sense the outside world, but it still lacked the ability to make independent choices.
Naturally, taking an Egg would be much more difficult than taking a hatched Pokémon.
"Zero."
Silas activated his cheat ability once again.
Among the already-hatched Gible, there were indeed several with extremely high potential.
Even so, if possible, he still preferred raising a Pokémon from the Egg stage.
Elite.
Elite.
Elite.
One "Elite" aptitude after another appeared before his eyes.
As expected of a pseudo-legendary Pokémon that had lived and flourished in the Dragon Den for generations.
The Elite aptitude that was incredibly rare in the outside world was merely the minimum standard here.
Compared to other pseudo-legendary Pokémon, Garchomp's evolution requirements weren't especially demanding.
Gabite evolved into Garchomp at Level 48.
That meant that even a Gible with only above-average potential could eventually evolve into a Garchomp.
Of course, it would require many times more effort and several times longer than others of its species.
Zero needed almost no time to analyze the aptitude of Pokémon still inside Eggs, and Silas quickly finished checking all of the Gible Eggs before him.
Unfortunately, none possessed Champion-level potential.
The best one reached only Elite Four-level potential.
Even so, Silas was perfectly satisfied.
For him, improving the rest later was simply a matter of investing enough resources.
"Then I'll..."
Just as he reached out toward the Egg with the highest potential, a sudden roar interrupted him.
"Grah! Grah!"
Silas instinctively turned toward a nearby sand dune.
The young prince Garchomp was howling excitedly.
Blaziken's voice echoed in Silas's mind through Aura.
"It looks like that Gabite just gave him an Egg."
Even through Aura communication, it couldn't hide its disbelief.
Silas blinked.
That was fast.
"Good grief that was fast?"
Then he quickly realized what had happened.
That Garchomp had probably been with the Gabite for quite some time already, and the Egg just happened to be laid now.
Even so, it was completely beyond his expectations.
The shameless simp had suddenly turned into a complete creep. Who could have seen that coming?
If Garchomp was considered the adult stage, then a newly evolved Gabite would naturally still be the equivalent of a teenager.
So calling that Garchomp a creep wasn't exactly unfair.
Then again by that logic, wouldn't Nidoking and Nidoqueen be even worse?
Silas quickly pushed the thought out of his mind.
A Gabite that was most likely to have Elite-level potential, with a small chance of Elite Four potential, paired with a Garchomp that most likely had Elite Four-level potential, with a small chance of Champion Level potential.
The Egg produced by those two would most likely end up somewhere around Elite Four potential.
Ignoring the excited Garchomp leader, who had already hurried over to look at yet another grandchild, Silas quietly picked up the Gible Egg with Elite Four-level potential.
However, with the clan leader absent, the selection process couldn't continue.
Left with no choice, he carried the Egg over to the sand dune where the newly laid Egg rested.
The father-and-son Garchomp pair were happily staring at the tiny Egg.
For a pseudo-legendary clan, even with a fairly large population, producing seven or eight Eggs in an entire year was already considered very productive.
And those Eggs still required time to hatch.
The Eggs Silas had just examined represented nearly every Egg laid by the clan over the past year.
Compared to Pokémon species that produced offspring in large numbers, pseudo-legendaries truly had an incredibly low reproduction rate.
Take Caterpie, for example.
Give one enough food and mates, and within two months an entire forest could easily be overrun by who-knows-how-many generations of its descendants.
"I've decided..."
Silas raised the Egg in his hands, about to speak.
At that moment, the blue interface projected by Zero flashed briefly across his vision.
"Grah?"
Seeing Silas holding an Egg high above his head, the Garchomp leader looked puzzled.
What's he doing? Is he about to smash the Egg?
"It's nothing, it's nothing."
A broad smile suddenly spread across Silas's face.
"I was just wondering whose child is this Egg?"
"Grah."
The young prince Garchomp proudly pounded his chest.
Mine.
"I see."
Silas nodded thoughtfully.
"In that case, I'd like to choose it as my future partner."
"Grah?"
"Grah??"
"Blaze?!"
The two Garchomp and Blaziken all cried out in confusion.
Because the Egg Silas was pointing at wasn't the one he was holding.
It was the newly laid Egg beside the Gabite.
"That's right."
Silas spoke calmly.
"I'll choose this one."
"It was laid the moment I arrived. I'd say the two of us are destined to meet."
Well that was certainly true.
The instant he arrived, a Gible Egg with Champion-level potential had been laid.
If that wasn't fate, what was?
According to Zero's analysis, the Gible inside that Egg possessed Champion-level aptitude.
At that moment, Silas suddenly felt that the young prince Garchomp truly deserved to inherit leadership of the clan.
Just look at the quality of his offspring.
Two Eggs in one year.
One with Elite Four-level potential.
One with Champion-level potential.
That level of efficiency was simply unbelievable.
If he kept producing offspring like this, it might not be long before the Dragon Den's Guardian changed from Dragonite to Garchomp.
The Garchomp leader didn't immediately object.
After all, according to the Guardian ancestor's instructions, this human Trainer was destined to leave with a Gible no matter what.
Compared to the Egg Silas was already holding, the leader actually preferred letting him take this newly laid one instead.
Even though it possessed Champion-level strength, it still couldn't determine the potential of a Pokémon while it was still inside an Egg.
Still, no matter how it looked at it, the offspring of the young prince and his official Garchomp mate should have been superior to one born from a Gabite.
"Grah!"
This time, however, the young prince Garchomp was the one protesting.
That's my child!
It may not be my first, but it's still precious!
Without another word, Silas pulled out a pile of materials that were highly beneficial to Dragon-type Pokémon.
He had traded for them at Blackthorn Gym during the week before the Rising Dragon Ceremony.
"Grah!"
The young prince Garchomp immediately hugged the entire pile into his arms.
He even remembered to give a portion to the Gabite.
Then, without the slightest hesitation, he pushed the newly laid Egg toward Silas.
The corner of Silas's mouth twitched.
He finally understood where that female Garchomp had learned her attitude from.
He could only say one thing, well played.
