Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 : New Master.

The forest was silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence—but something deeper. Something that made every sound feel louder than it should be.

Kaelen sat on a thick branch of a towering tree, his back resting against the rough bark. His breathing was slow, controlled, but his body was tired.

The events of the past few days kept replaying in his mind.

The exam.

The results.

The long line of students.

And then—

Nothing.

No S-rank teacher.

No opportunity.

No future.

"…All that effort…"

He clenched his fist.

"…Was it not enough?"

A soft wind passed through the forest, rustling the leaves around him.

Then—

Something changed.

Kaelen's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…What is that?"

A scent.

Strong.

Unusual.

It didn't belong to the forest.

It wasn't soil, or leaves, or animals.

It was something sharper.

Something… intentional.

Curiosity replaced his frustration.

He jumped down from the branch and began moving slowly toward the source.

Each step was careful.

Silent.

The scent grew stronger.

And then—

He saw it.

A small hut.

Hidden between trees.

Almost invisible unless you were looking for it.

"…Someone lives here?"

Kaelen approached cautiously.

Every instinct told him to stay alert.

This place didn't feel normal.

As he stepped closer—

A flash of lightning split the sky.

For a brief second—

Everything turned white.

And in that instant—

A shadow moved.

THUD.

Pain exploded at the back of his neck.

Everything went dark.

Kaelen's eyes slowly opened.

His vision blurred at first.

Then sharpened.

He was lying on the floor.

Wooden.

Rough.

"…Where am I…?"

He sat up quickly.

"Hey! Who's there?!"

"Don't shout in here."

The voice was calm.

Firm.

Close.

Kaelen turned.

A man sat across the room.

Relaxed.

Watching him.

"You…"

Kaelen narrowed his eyes.

"You're the one from outside."

The man tilted his head slightly.

"No."

He smirked.

"You're the one inside my house."

Kaelen paused.

"…Right."

He scratched his head awkwardly.

"Sorry about that."

Then quickly added—

"Are you a ninja?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he observed Kaelen carefully.

"…Your scent," he said finally.

"It's the strongest I've ever smelled."

Kaelen blinked.

"…My scent?"

"Are you a ninja?" the man asked.

Kaelen frowned.

"First answer me—why am I here?"

"I brought you here," the man replied simply.

Kaelen sighed.

Of course.

He leaned back slightly.

"…I couldn't find an S-rank ninja."

The words came out heavier than expected.

"All my hard work…"

He looked down.

"…Feels wasted."

The man watched him for a moment.

Then—

Smiled.

"What if I train you?"

Kaelen froze.

"…What?"

He stood up instantly.

"You're joking, right?"

The man's expression didn't change.

"Then you must be an S-rank ninja!" Kaelen said quickly.

"…Yeah."

Kaelen's eyes widened.

"You are?!"

Hope surged through him.

Stronger than anything he had felt in days.

"Then—please!"

He stepped forward.

"Train me!"

The man raised a hand.

Stopping him.

"Not so easily."

Kaelen stopped.

"You'll have to pass a test."

Kaelen's expression grew serious.

"For the last twenty years," the man continued,

"No one has passed it."

A chill ran down Kaelen's spine.

"…Twenty years?"

For a moment—

Fear crept in.

But then—

He clenched his fist.

This was his chance.

His only chance.

"I'm ready."

The words came out firm.

Without hesitation.

The man studied him.

Then nodded slightly.

"…Good."

Kaelen took a breath.

"What's your name?"

The man smirked faintly.

"Finish the test first."

Kaelen frowned.

"…Seriously?"

"No names."

The man leaned back.

"Not yet."

He reached beside him and picked up a small scroll.

"This is your path."

Kaelen took it.

Unrolled it.

A map.

Simple.

But detailed enough.

"A route through the forest," the man explained.

"There are traps hidden along the way."

Kaelen looked up.

"How many?"

The man smiled slightly.

"Enough."

Kaelen narrowed his eyes.

"You must follow this path," the man continued,

"And return here before sunset."

Kaelen glanced outside.

The sun had already begun to rise.

"…So I don't have much time."

"No," the man replied.

"You don't."

Kaelen rolled up the scroll.

"…Then I'll make it back."

Without another word—

He ran out of the hut.

The forest felt different now.

Every step mattered.

Every movement counted.

Kaelen followed the path on the map carefully.

At first—

Nothing happened.

But he didn't relax.

"…Too quiet."

Then—

CLICK.

Kaelen's eyes widened.

He jumped back instantly.

A set of sharp wooden spikes shot up from the ground where he had just stepped.

"…Traps."

His heartbeat increased.

"This isn't going to be easy…"

He moved forward again.

Slower this time.

More cautious.

The path twisted between trees.

Over roots.

Through uneven terrain.

Every few steps—

A new danger.

Hidden wires.

Falling logs.

Sharp projectiles.

Kaelen dodged.

Blocked.

Jumped.

But the forest didn't stop.

It kept testing him.

Kaelen moved quickly around a cluster of trees.

His focus sharp.

His body tense.

But—

One moment.

Just one.

His foot caught something.

SNAP.

"…!"

Too late.

A shuriken shot out from the side.

It struck his leg.

"—!"

Pain exploded through his body.

He fell hard onto the ground.

Blood began to spread quickly.

"…Damn it!"

He gritted his teeth.

Trying to stand.

But his leg shook.

"…I can't stop here…"

The sun was already climbing higher.

Time was running out.

Kaelen forced himself up.

Step by step.

Each movement sent pain through his leg.

Blood dripped onto the forest floor.

"…I have to keep going…"

But his vision blurred slightly.

Then—

He heard something.

Low growls.

From the distance.

Animals.

Attracted by the smell of blood.

"…Great."

Kaelen looked around quickly.

A cave.

Not far.

He moved toward it.

Limping.

Struggling.

Each step heavier than the last.

Finally—

He reached it.

🕳️ Inside the Cave

The cave was dark.

Cold.

But safe.

For now.

Kaelen leaned against the wall.

Breathing heavily.

"…Focus…"

He tore a piece of cloth from his sleeve.

Carefully—

He wrapped his wound.

Tight.

Stopping the bleeding.

"…I can't stay here long…"

He looked toward the cave entrance.

The forest waited outside.

The path.

The traps.

The test.

And the hut.

"…I will finish this."

His voice was quiet.

But firm.

Despite the pain.

Despite the fear.

He stood up again.

Unsteady.

But determined.

Kaelen stepped out of the cave—

Back into the forest.

Into the trial.

Into the unknown.

"No matter what it takes… I'll pass this test."
