Raven and Alara moved quickly to the right, their boots running over charred paper and warped floorboards as heat blew off the walls around them. They moved eight feet ahead, then dropped behind another bookshelf for cover. The moment their backs touched the bookshelf, a surge of fire chased after them. Flames flew out, hitting Raven she was badly burned across her right arm. Searing heat tore into her skin, and the smell of burning flesh filled the air as Raven suffered second and third-degree burns.
Through the smoke and flames, they saw the source of Ravens burns. A man in a lawn gardener's uniform complete with a faded green apron and a ridiculous straw hat, walked towards them like some deranged suburban net nanny. He held a flamethrower in his arms, laughing like a lunatic.
"Hahaha! Time to burn the wicked weeds to the ground!" he shouted, sweeping the flame thrower in wide arcs, igniting overturned books and furniture into flames.
But as the tear gas Raven let loose earlier finally reached him, he started to cough and wheeze as he breathed it in. His eyes started watering, making his aim became erratic.
Raven aimed and fired. Her AK-203 once into the man's left kneecap. The bullet tore through the man's kneecap, as he collapsed onto one knee with a scream.
"You bitches! I can't believe I got hit by on the job! I've never been hit by a weed before on an extermination job!"
The man twisted his flamethrower, sending streams of flames in every direction as he tried to maintain control of it in his arms.
Raven gave a mental command to one of her drones. The drone, moved unseen behind him, opening a hatch on its underside and firing a dart into the man's back. A second later, the dart unleashed a violent burst of electricity. The man convulsed violently, twitching and jerking as the high-voltage current raced through his body. He dropped the flamethrower, twitching and screaming on the floor.
Alara looked over at Raven with concern saying. "You tazed him instead of shooting him dead. You just want that flamethrower, don't you admit it."
Despite the burns stretching along her right forearm, Raven's tone was calm. "Guilty. I'm not going to risk blowing up the fuel tank. That flamethrower is primo technology. I need it for study."
Alara chuckled responding. "Fair enough."
Raven issued another silent command. The drone shot out a magnetic grappling hook from its underside as it grabed onto the flamethrower's metal frame and began to pull it towards Raven. As she grabbed it and stored it into the system space for later study.
Alara in an act of vengeance, raised her rifle. She aimed at the bookshelf behind the man and shot out its support legs. The entire burning bookshelf fell onto his body.
The man screamed as the fire began to consume him. "AHH! You bitches! You won't meet a good end! Adam! Kill these bitcheeees—!"
Then Raven heard a familiar sound heading in their direction.
"Incoming!" she yelled, instincts kicking in. She ordered her drone to intercept the object. The drone turned midair and flew directly into the missiles path.
Boom.
The explosion ripped through the air, sending waves of pressureized heat through the smog clogged chamber. The explosion destroyed nearby bookshelves. Raven and Alara were thrown backwards, crashing into a marble support pillar, then falling to the ground.
Raven and Alara climbed to their feet, coughing. Both held their AK-203s.
Two more grenades flew through the smoke.
"Watch Your Left!" Raven yelled, eyes tracking the grenade.
The first grenade hit a pile of burning books and exploded in a thunderous explosion. The second grenade came flying towards them.
Raven swung her rifle like a bat and smacked the grenade away. It bounced once then.
Boom. The blast sent debris flying. A bookshelf, now little more than splinters, came crashing down in their direction. Raven threw herself in front of Alara, raising her injured arm to break the impact.
