"Maura?" Zane called, his voice strained with frustration and confusion at her presence.
He was certain she had left the previous day.
Maura stepped closer, stopping just short of him, a deliberate gap between them. "You left me alone to fend for myself, knowing how vulnerable I am."
Zane rubbed his temples lightly before replying. "That wasn't the case. So, how are you feeling now?"
Maura studied him quietly, noticing the same conflict clouding his face as the day before. Even the question he asked—though laced with genuine concern—carried no warmth.
It sounded cold and distant.
Still, she wasn't going to rush things.
Wearing a gentle smile, Maura replied, "I'm better now. But I have to return since I have no place to stay in this new city. You promised to make me feel safe here."
Right. He was supposed to arrange accommodation for her, but he'd been distracted—by Selina.
Before he could say a word, Maura's voice grated further on his already thin patience.
