Sapphire P.O.V
I'm still in shock when I see her here, casually shopping for groceries while I have been looking for her this past week and now, she just suddenly appeared in front of me where I least expected it. Ruby also looks at me with surprise when she recognizes me and look like a deer caught in headlights.
"Wh-where have you been?" I ask her, my voice shaking a little from the emotion that is going through me right now after seeing my missing sister after all these years. She just looks at me for a few seconds before she whispers "Sapphire? Is that really you?" She asks me softly. "Of course it's me. Who else would I be?" I told her. She just looks shocked and honestly, she looks a bit scared to see me, like she should have not met me.
I look at her waiting for her to answer my question. After a few seconds of silence she says, "you have grown taller since the last time I saw you." "Of course, I grew taller it's been years since the last time you saw me," I said trying to keep my emotion from spilling out.
Her face turns sad when I said that and she apologizes to me saying, "I know it was wrong of me to just run away from home all those years ago, but I felt like that was what I had to do to gain my freedom."
"But you could have talk calmly with father and come to a mutual agreement about your marriage," I told her. Her face got even sadder when I mention about marriage. "Let's not talk here. Come and have a drink with me," she says after she looks around as people were looking at us.
We are just standing at the same place and blocking people, so I agreed and after we paid for everything, we went to this small coffee shop that was not that far from the supermarket.
After entering the coffee shop, we walk to the cash register and paid for the drinks before we choose to seat down at the back of the shop, as it is quieter and more peaceful to have a private talk. As a bonus the sofas are very comfortable to sit and relax on. After we settle down, I confronted her. "Ok. Here we are. Now explain."
She took a deep breath before she began to speak. "I don't know what you guys went through after I ran away, and I want you to know that I'm very sorry for causing pain to you and our parents."
"Then why have you never tried to even contact us all these years," you could hear the hurt in my voice when I spoke. "Believe me. I wanted to but my fear of what mom and dad would say stop me from contacting you guys."
"Fine but you could have contacted me! I would not have told mom about where you are," I countered her. "I don't know. I guess I was too occupied trying to make money and then with my marriage and-" I cut her off, "yes your marriage with Ricardo Giovanni." She looks at me with a shock expression. "H-how did you know?" she stammers. "It's a small world and believe it or not he is now my boss," I told her.
"Wow! It is a small world. But how do you know that I was married to him? He didn't tell you, did he?" she ask with a hint of guilt and sorrow in her voice. I just look at her curiously and answered, "No. Of course, he didn't tell. I found out myself when I was doing a background check on him on the internet and imagine my surprise when your name popped up. So, I did a little more research and voila! I found the article about your marriage to him for about a year then you divorce him for some reason."
Her face just showed sadness and guilt again. I was just about to ask her when she asks, "How is he doing right now?" "He's doing good, I guess. I don't see him much as he has a cold attitude that is hard to get along with," I answered. "Yes, he does have that cold exterior but deep inside he is a very caring and loving man," she said with a longing sigh.
"Do you still love him?" I ask her. That question has been on my mind ever since I discovered about their divorce. I look at her expectantly. She looks very troubled, but she said, "I-I do still love him but-" she paused.
"But what?" I ask her. She looks away from me and suddenly her eyes widened. A look of terror crossing her eyes and as fast as she could she got up grabbing her things before she says "I'm so sorry! But I need to leave now. Here give me your number."
I just numbly write my number on a tissue paper and Ruby quickly grabs it. She then hugs me and whisper in my ear. "Take care of yourself. I will contact you later and don't tell Ricardo you ever saw me ok." After that she quickly walks away before I could regain my senses.
I just sat there for a minute in shock before I shook my head and groan. When I came to my senses Ruby is already long gone. I tried searching around the mall for her but I didn't manage to find her.
I can't believe I just let her walk away like that! After all the searching I did to find her and when I found her in the most unlikely place, I just let her walk away before asking her where she lives and what's she is doing right now. I'm worried now as I don't get why she looked so terrified when she saw the clock like she was late for something.
As I thought about it, I went back to the coffee shop to grab the grocery bags that I left behind when I went searching for Ruby. I grab the grocery bags before walking out of the café, thanking the waiter for his help in looking after my grocery bags.
As I walk, I thought about why she didn't want me to tell my boss that I met her, not that my boss wants to know anyways, as he has threaten me that if I talk about her again to him, I will get suspended from work with no pay.
I keep mulling over this during the drive home. I'm also confused with what she said. If she still loves him then why divorce him. I can tell from her expression that she still genuinely loves him. The thoughts keep spinning around my head until I arrived home. I then park the car in my parking spot. I got out of the car juggling the grocery bags locking the car as I carry them to my house.
I made my way to the front door unlocking it before entering the house and locking it once I'm inside. "I'm home!" I said loudly so that Beth would know that I'm home. I didn't hear a reply so I just shrugged, she must still be sleeping or engrossed with a programmed on the TV.
I put the house and car keys in the bowl that is near the door before grabbing all the grocery bags and carrying them to the kitchen to put them where they belong. It took several minutes before everything was done. I check the clock on the wall and its already time for lunch, so I decided to make macaroni and cheese as that is one of my all-time favorite foods.
So, I prepared all the necessary ingredients that I need for making the macaroni before heating up the stove. I hum a song that is stuck in my head since I heard it in the car while cooking. Once all the cooking is done, I set the table for two, and then I walk to the living room as I can hear noises coming from there.
I was not surprised when I see Beth laying sprawled on the couch watching the TV. I shook my head and loudly told her that lunch is ready so that she can hear me over the noise of the TV. I chuckle when she jumps up when I spoke as she was too engross with watching the TV that she didn't even hear me enter the living room.
She looks at me sheepishly before getting off the couch and walking to the kitchen. "Wow! The macaroni looks good. Thanks for the meal," she says before digging in. I just nodded at her and began to eat my portion of the macaroni.
We eat in comfortable silence until Beth broke the silence with a question. "So, what's bothering you on this lovely afternoon." I look at her not knowing how she can always know when something is bothering me or if I'm upset about something.
I smile thinking I how lucky I am to have a friend like her. I'm not sure how to explain about what transpired during my grocery shopping so I replied, "Oh. It's just that something happened when I went shopping for grocery." The expression she gave me was quite funny that I laugh.
"I know something happened to make you look this troubled," she says trying to get the truth out of me. I took a deep breath before I told her, "You will never believe it." "Try me," she challenges. "Ok. I met Ruby today while I was doing my grocery shopping at the mall," I told her and to my surprise she chokes on her food. I quickly went to her and pat her back to help her and gave her water once she finishes coughing.
"Are you ok?" I ask her. "Yeah, I'm fine but did you seriously just met your sister today? While doing grocery shopping of all things," she replies. I nodded, "I was surprised to. I could not believe my eyes! I thought I was seeing things but when I call my her out, she looks up and I saw my sister's face. She didn't look that much different than she did a few years ago. She's just looks skinnier now compared to before."
"Damn. Then what happen?" she asks eagerly. "Nothing much we talk for a bit until she suddenly had to leave and ask me for my number and told not to tell my boss that I met her before she rushes out of the café.
I was shocked when she left in a hurry that I missed her. I tried looking for her but couldn't find her. I didn't even get to ask her all the question that I have been meaning to ask. I also think she is in some sort of trouble, but she left before I could find out what it is," I groan to Beth.
"It's ok. She has your number, doesn't she?" Beth asks. I just nodded my head. "Then I'm sure that she will contact you sooner or later," she assures me. I am not sure if she will ever contact me but all I could do was agree with what Beth said and continue eating my macaroni until its finish before walking to the sink and washing the plates and utensils.
"Ok! Why don't we have a marathon of twilight today. I'm sure you need something to do to get rid of your troubled thoughts for today and just relax," she suggests. I thought about it for a few seconds and just nod my head. I needed to relax after today's events, and I have been meaning to rewatch twilight for a while now.
Beth squeals and got out of her chair running to the living room to no doubt get everything ready for our movie marathon. I just sighed grab her plate and utensils, putting them in the sink to wash it, and then I walk to the living room sitting down on the couch besides Beth as I wait for the movie to start.
