Chapter 136 – The Ice Devil Fruit
"There's nothing more to discuss," the masked man said, his tone low and final. "Prepare to die."
Hatake Yusuke brought his hands together, his fingers forming seals at a speed that defied logic.
"Hm? Those hand signs… they're unbelievably fast!" Kakashi activated his Sharingan, but even with its enhanced perception, he could barely track the movement. Each flicker of Yusuke's fingers looked more like a blur than a motion.
What kind of hand signs are those? I've never seen them before… Kakashi thought grimly.
If Yusuke could've heard his brother's thoughts, he would've snorted and said, Of course you haven't. They're completely made up. Looks cooler this way, doesn't it?
Truth be told, Yusuke wasn't using any real technique—he was simply improvising for dramatic effect. He was skilled, yes, but nowhere near as meticulous with seals as Kakashi or other specialists.
"Ice Block: Two-Spine Spear."
Four massive ice spears materialized in the air, their tips gleaming menacingly before they shot forward.
"Hatake Kenjutsu: Fire Blade!"
Kakashi's sword ignited, releasing a fiery shockwave that sliced through the air. The collision created a burst of steam as the flames met ice, but the spears didn't shatter completely. Kakashi cut down the last one just in time, shards of frost scattering across the ground.
"Ice Block: Ice Ball."
Two enormous spheres of ice flew toward him next.
"Black Lightning: Chidori Stream!"
Black electricity erupted from Kakashi's body, radiating outward like a storm. The moment the ice touched the lightning, it vaporized instantly.
"Not bad… Hatake Kakashi of Konoha," Yusuke said coldly.
Inwardly, though, he mused, Hmm, maybe I should ramp it up a little. If I hold back too much, it won't look convincing. He can still handle it.
"Ice Block: Pheasant Beak Blizzard!"
A colossal bird of pure ice took form and soared through the sky. Everywhere its wings passed, the earth froze solid.
"Armament Haki: Hatake Kenjutsu—Crimson Lotus!"
Kakashi swung his blade, unleashing a fiery red slash that expanded into a spinning lotus of flames. The explosion of energy whipped the air into a violent storm, forcing Naruto and the others to retreat.
"T-That guy's insane! He's too strong!" Naruto shouted, eyes wide.
"Y-Yeah… and it's freezing cold! Everything's turning to ice!" Sakura shivered, clutching her arms.
"Let's go help Kakashi-sensei!" Naruto declared, forming a hand sign.
"Shadow Cl—"
"Don't," Toneri interrupted sharply, his tone cutting through the chaos. "This level of battle isn't something we can interfere with."
"What?! So we just stand here and watch?! I can't do that!" Naruto protested.
"If you rush in, you'll only get in the way. Uncle Kakashi hasn't even gone all out yet. The fight's not decided," Toneri said firmly.
"He's right, Naruto," Sakura added. "We have to trust Kakashi-sensei."
"Idiot. If you jump in now, he'll have to protect you—and that's suicide," Sasuke muttered coldly.
"But… wait! Toneri, you're strong, right? You're on Kakashi-sensei's level! Go help him!" Naruto pleaded.
Toneri shook his head. "No. My strength can't compare to his. Uncle Kakashi trained me because I was still lacking in every way."
"Hatake Kenjutsu: Hundred Blossoms Frenzy!"
Kakashi charged, his blade slicing through the air with blinding speed. Each slash bloomed into a fiery arc, hundreds of them scattering like petals.
"Child's play."
"Ice Wall."
A thick barrier of ice rose from the ground, blocking every strike.
"Ittō-Ryū: Lion's Roar!"
Kakashi's sword blazed with chakra as he unleashed a concentrated slash that shattered the ice wall in a single strike.
"Ittō-Ryū: Lion's Elegy!"
He followed up immediately, his sword glowing with raw elemental power.
"Ice Blade: Saber."
Cold mist spilled from Yusuke's lips as he formed a blade of pure frost in his hand. He blocked Kakashi's attack effortlessly, their swords clashing with a sharp crack.
"He stopped Ame-no-Habakiri… without even flinching?!" Kakashi thought, shocked.
"Frozen Moment."
An overwhelming chill burst outward from Yusuke's body. Kakashi tried to retreat, but frost had already begun crawling up his legs.
"It's over, Kakashi," Yusuke's voice rumbled—low, heavy, and full of power.
But the frozen body before him suddenly dissipated into mist.
"A Shadow Clone, huh? Impressive," Yusuke said with a faint smirk. As expected of my little brother.
"Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu!"
Kakashi's arm shot up from the ground, grabbing Yusuke's leg and pulling him under. He burst from the earth a moment later, pressing his blade to Yusuke's neck.
"It's over. You've lost," Kakashi declared.
Yusuke's eyes narrowed behind the mask. "You're overconfident. Do you really think that was my full power? And one more thing…" He smirked slightly. "Talking so much in the middle of a battle without absolute advantage—that's just foolish."
Kakashi froze for a moment. Those exact words… he'd heard them long ago—from the same man standing before him.
Frost erupted from Yusuke's body. Ice spread rapidly from the tip of Kakashi's sword.
"You've grown strong, Kakashi," Yusuke said quietly. "So let me enjoy this—just a little."
"Ice Age."
A wave of deathly cold exploded outward, devouring everything in its path.
"This is bad… If he keeps this up, everything will freeze over!"
Far away, Tsunade dashed toward the battlefield, the air growing colder with every step. Even from this distance, the chill bit into her bones.
"T-Tsunade-sama! What's going on?!" Shizune cried, running after her.
"If this continues, the entire region could be destroyed! Innocent people will die!"
"But… wouldn't Yusuke-sama already know that?" Shizune asked nervously.
"You don't know him like I do," Tsunade replied, eyes narrowing. "He might look calm and kind… but deep down, he's a battle maniac."
Shizune's eyes widened. "A… battle maniac?"
"Yeah. A true one. He always said no one could defeat him. But that power—it's a curse. He's too strong for this world. Every fight feels empty to him. There's no excitement, no challenge. That's his torment."
"Then… what does that have to do with this?"
"Kakashi's different," Tsunade said. "He's strong—stronger than most Kage. For the first time in ages, Yusuke's actually enjoying a fight. Even though Kakashi's still far beneath him, he's powerful enough to make Yusuke feel something."
"So Yusuke-sama is really that strong…?"
"The word strong doesn't even come close. In this world, he's beyond comparison. If he wanted to, Kakashi would already be dead."
Shizune's breath caught in her throat. "That's… impossible…"
"That's why we have to stop him," Tsunade said, her voice firm. "If he loses control, this entire land will vanish under ice."
Back on the battlefield, Kakashi's expression grew grim. Frost covered everything in sight—the ground, the trees, even the sky itself seemed frozen.
"Ryūō: Hatake Secret Technique—Heaven-Earth Severance!"
Lightning, fire, and earth chakra fused together as Kakashi's sword shone with blinding power, layered with Armament Haki. It was a strike powerful enough to split even a complete Susanoo in one swing.
"Magnificent," Yusuke said, smiling. "You truly are my brother."
"Frozen Mountains and Rivers!"
The world turned white as Yusuke's aura consumed the field. Kakashi's attack tore through the ice, cracking it wide—but it wasn't enough. The explosion sent shards flying, and Kakashi collapsed, exhausted.
"Frozen World."
The sky dimmed. Snow began to fall, slow and silent. Yusuke raised his hand, his power spreading across the battlefield like a living storm. He wanted to push Kakashi further—to draw out every ounce of strength hidden within him.
If not for Toneri shielding the others from afar, Naruto and the rest would have been frozen solid by now.
"You idiot!"
A furious roar cut through the blizzard, shaking the air.
"STOP IT, YUSUKE!!!" Tsunade's voice thundered across the frozen land.
