One moment, my father had the upper hand. He had looked so sure of himself… so dangerous that he made me proud. But in the next minute, all of that shattered, and in the place where a brave man once stood, a man who was visibly afraid now replaced him.
His face fell. His body sagged and his eyes— hollowed out and deep— wouldn't stop staring in my direction like he was about to lose something precious. And for some reason, something about that look… something about the way he watched me carefully, made my chest ache.
His lips pressed into a thin line as he watched me with a fear so raw, it made my insides tremble. And when he spoke up, his voice had lost its power… its authority. He was pleading.
"Darius…" he drawled softly, calmly. "That's your sister right there."
"She is not my sister!" He screamed back, his voice seeping into my ear. "She may be your daughter but she's not my sister!"
