Ava stared at her phone long after the line had gone dead, her hand trembling so violently she had to set the device down before she dropped it. The silence in the room became suffocating, thick with the sharp sting of unfinished words and the ghost of a voice she desperately needed to hear.
Behind her, Damian didn't move. He watched her like he was assessing her every move and reaction.
"Who was that?" His voice was low and calm. That alone made her pulse spike.
"I...I don't know," she said, forcing her voice to sound steady, but her breathing betrayed her. "Probably a mistake."
He stepped closer, closing the distance she had created between them, his eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her feel stripped bare.
"You answered that call like you were expecting it," he said quietly.
