Chapter 12 - Journey to the Celestial Citadel

The morning of departure arrived beneath a silver sky.

Clouds drifted low over the Legacy Academy, and a cold wind moved through the seven towers like a warning.

Today, the chosen heirs would leave for the Celestial Citadel.

Today, the game of succession truly began.

The central plaza was already filled with students, professors, and noble attendants. At its centre stood the Sky Gate—a massive circular portal built from white stone and ancient silver metal, covered in glowing runes older than the academy itself.

It shimmered like a mirror made of light.

Beyond it waited the floating city above the clouds.

The Celestial Citadel.

A place where rulers were chosen.

And where many heirs never returned.

Aarav stood at the western side of the plaza, dressed in the black formal combat uniform of House Umbra.

Silver lines traced the edges of his coat like living shadows.

Nightfall rested at his waist.

The Royal Signet Ring gleamed softly on his hand.

Students whispered the moment he appeared.

Even now, the title followed him.

The Shadow Heir.

The one who defeated Kaiden.

The return of House Umbra.

But Aarav ignored all of it.

His eyes remained fixed on the Sky Gate.

Behind him, Kael and Seraphine stood like silent guardians.

Though invisible to most, their presence was heavier than armour.

Seraphine spoke first.

"Once you enter the Citadel, every step must be calculated."

Kael added,

"The summit does not begin with battle."

His voice was calm.

"It begins with smiles."

Aarav smirked faintly.

"So politics first. Murder later."

Kael almost smiled.

"Now you understand."

Before more could be said, footsteps approached.

Lyra.

She wore the ceremonial silver-and-black robes of House Bloodmoon, her crescent crest glowing faintly beneath the morning light.

Several noble students stepped aside just from her presence.

She stopped in front of Aarav.

"You're late."

Aarav looked at the nearly empty plaza.

"I'm early."

Lyra folded her arms.

"Emotionally late."

Kael muttered behind him,

"I like her."

Aarav ignored him.

Lyra's silver eyes softened for a brief moment.

Then she handed him a folded black document.

"The list of confirmed heirs attending the Summit."

Aarav opened it.

Names.

Bloodlines.

Ranks.

At the top:

Kaiden Stormborn — First Heir of Stormborn

Below him:

Lyra Moonveil — Crown Princess of Bloodmoon

Riyan Solaris — Third Heir of Solaris

Several other powerful names followed.

Then—

A name near the bottom.

Cassian Solaris — First Prince of Solaris

Aarav's eyes narrowed.

"This one."

Lyra's expression darkened.

"He's the dangerous one."

"Riyan is pride."

"Cassian is patient."

She lowered her voice.

"He's the one the elders trust to remove problems quietly."

Kael's tone sharpened.

"Watch him first."

Aarav nodded slowly.

Another enemy.

Good.

It made things clearer.

Professor Drake's voice suddenly echoed across the plaza.

"All chosen heirs, step forward."

The crowd parted.

Kaiden Stormborn approached from the eastern side, lightning dancing faintly around his sleeves.

Riyan Solaris followed with obvious arrogance, though his eyes still carried resentment from his defeat.

Several heirs from Frostveil, Verdantis, and Ironclad joined them.

And finally—

A man in crimson-and-gold robes descended from the Solaris tower steps.

Calm.

Elegant.

Smiling.

Cassian Solaris.

Even from a distance, Aarav could feel it.

This one was dangerous.

Cassian's gaze passed over the group casually—

Then paused on Aarav.

A smile.

Warm.

Perfect.

Completely false.

He walked forward and extended a hand.

"So this is the famous shadow heir."

His voice was smooth.

"Cassian Solaris. A pleasure."

The entire plaza watched.

A test.

Aarav looked at the offered hand.

Then met Cassian's eyes.

"People who say that usually mean the opposite."

Silence.

Then Kaiden laughed.

Actually laughed.

Even Lyra looked away to hide a smile.

Cassian's own smile never changed.

"Good."

He lowered his hand naturally.

"I prefer honesty."

Kael's voice whispered,

No. He prefers control.

Professor Drake stepped forward before the tension could deepen.

"The portal opens in one minute."

He looked at every heir.

"The Celestial Citadel does not forgive weakness."

"Do not embarrass this academy."

Riyan scoffed.

Kaiden rolled his shoulders.

Cassian simply smiled.

Aarav touched the moon pendant Lyra had given him.

The shadows around the Sky Gate began to tremble.

The portal was activating.

Silver light flooded the plaza.

Runes ignited one after another.

The giant circular gate opened like the eye of heaven itself.

Beyond it—

Clouds.

Floating bridges.

Golden towers suspended in the sky.

And at the centre—

A palace of white stone and black crystal.

The Celestial Citadel.

The crowd gasped.

Even students who had seen it before stood in silence.

Power.

Legacy.

Danger.

It all waited beyond that gate.

Professor Drake raised his hand.

"Enter."

Kaiden moved first.

Of course.

Lightning flashed as he stepped into the portal without hesitation.

Riyan followed, trying to look equally confident.

Other heirs entered one by one.

Cassian paused beside Aarav before stepping forward.

Without looking at him, he said quietly,

"Be careful in the Citadel."

His voice remained pleasant.

"People disappear there."

Then he walked through the portal.

Lyra stood beside Aarav.

"He wasn't warning you."

"I know."

She looked at him.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then she said softly,

"Come back."

Not a strategy.

Not politics.

Just truth.

Aarav's expression softened.

"I will."

She stepped into the portal first.

Moonlight swallowed her form.

Aarav remained alone for one final second.

He looked back once.

At the Legacy Academy.

At the ruined tower that was no longer ruined.

At the battlefield where his return had begun.

Then he walked forward.

The moment he crossed the Sky Gate, the world changed.

Weight vanished.

The air became thinner.

The sky opened around him.

For one breathtaking second, he was standing among clouds.

Floating islands drifted in the distance.

Ancient dragons circled far above like living legends.

Bridges of crystal connected towers suspended in the heavens.

And before him stood the Celestial Citadel.

Magnificent.

Beautiful.

Terrifying.

The capital of legacy itself.

As the heirs gathered on the arrival platform, a line of royal guards stood waiting.

At their centre stood an old man in white robes with golden eyes.

His presence was heavier than anyone Aarav had met.

Even Kaiden straightened slightly.

The old man spoke.

"Welcome, heirs."

His voice was gentle.

But absolutely.

"I am Lord Regent Alistair."

"The keeper of the Legacy Summit."

His golden gaze swept across them all.

Then stopped on Aarav.

For just a moment.

Longer than the others.

Interesting.

Then he continued.

"Three trials await you."

"Politics."

"Power."

"And truth."

His voice lowered.

"Most heirs survive only one."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Then Alistair smiled faintly.

"Welcome to the Celestial Citadel."

Behind the grand palace, far above the floating city, hidden behind divine chains and ancient runes—

Something ancient opened one crimson eye.

And for the first time in centuries…

It smiled.

The heir of Umbra had arrived.
