Chapter 17: Shadows of the Past and the Endless Horde
Act I: Shadows of the Past
The morning sun was just beginning to crest over the horizon of the Military Academy, painting the sky in hues of pale amber and cold gray. In a secluded corner of the training grounds, Roose and Maria stood in silence. The rest of the team was still waiting for Kai to fully recover. However, before setting out on their very first official group mission, there were unspoken secrets between the two of them that desperately needed to be brought to light.
Roose pulled out a sleek, silver pocket watch. He stared at the ticking hands before speaking in a calm, measured voice. "Maria, the kind of power our Captain Kai is awakening... the Academy's higher-ups are trying their best to keep it buried in the dark. But let's be honest—neither of us are exactly ordinary either. Before we head into today's mission, we need to lay our cards on the table."
Maria checked the edge of her dual daggers, letting out a heavy, weary sigh. "My background isn't a secret, Roose. It's a curse. My family was once part of the 'Phantom Vanguard,' the military's elite stealth unit. But during a past war, their Scholar team was betrayed and framed. I came to this Academy to clear their name. But this Wind Magic inside me... sometimes, it terrifies me."
With a sharp click, Roose snapped his pocket watch shut. "At least your family has a name to clear, Maria. I don't even have that. I was pulled out of a collapsed space-rift zone as a child. My magic isn't elemental; it's Positional Magic. I can read spatial coordinates and swap places by manipulating the alignment of light and shadow. But as for where I truly come from? Even I don't know."
Suddenly, a piercing alarm blared from their wrist communicators. The Commander's voice cut through the static, cold and authoritative:
[Attention Team Kai. The sector is clear. Deploy immediately.]
Act II: The Monster Forest and the Anomalous Space Gate
Within an hour, Team Kai reached the outermost boundary of the Monster Forest—a treacherous territory strictly forbidden to ordinary students. The trees here were a sickening, twisted obsidian black, weaving together to block out the sun and trapping the forest floor in a perpetual, suffocating twilight.
Kai walked at the front. He was now fully healed, his eyes sharper and more focused than ever before. Right beside him was Rick, a newly forged silver metal shield gleaming proudly on his back. Guarding the rear was Bobby, his magical purple left eye scanning the dense perimeter for any sudden spikes in energy.
"Stay sharp, everyone," Kai warned in a low tone. "According to the Commander's briefing, a minor spatial anomaly has been detected in this sector. Our objective is to sweep the cave ahead and eliminate any stray monsters. The Commander believes there are at most one or two low-level beasts. Treat this as a basic trial for our five-man squad."
Yet, the moment they stepped into the deepest recess of the cavern, the atmospheric pressure violently dropped. Embedded directly into the stone wall at the center of the cave was a massive, bizarre structure—The Space Gate.
This was no ordinary monster den. A swirling, violent vortex of purple and dark cosmic energy was rotating continuously before them.
Bobby raised his rifle, peering through his sniper scope. "I see it... it's a Space Gate, alright. However, the portal's energy signature is currently incredibly low and highly unstable. That means no high-level or catastrophic boss monster can squeeze through into our world. Only small, weak pests are slipping through the cracks."
"Well, then this should be a walk in the park," Rick muttered with a cocky smirk.
Act III: The Attack of the Swift Hunters
Right at that moment, a feral, echoing growl reverberated from the darkest corner of the Space Gate.
Tearing through the shadows, a beast emerged. It looked like a grotesque hybrid of a massive wolf and a hound, but its skin was an unnatural, light-absorbing obsidian black. Its frame was incredibly lean, supported by unnaturally elongated hind legs built for terrifying bursts of speed. Its eyes glowed a sinister, blood red. This was a highly intelligent, lightning-fast predator—a Shadow Stalker.
"Just a single beast," Kai said, drawing his blade with an easy fluid motion. "Let's wrap this up quickly!"
The obsidian monster wasted no time. With an unbelievable burst of speed, it lunged straight at Kai, leaving nothing but a trail of distorted black afterimages in the air.
"Rick, front guard!" Kai barked.
"On it!" Rick slammed his massive shield heavily into the ground. A blinding wave of silver light erupted forward—The Aegis Barrier! The Shadow Stalker slammed violently against the energy shield, but the barrier held firm, completely halting its momentum.
Taking advantage of the monster's momentary disorientation, Maria made her move.
"Gale Shroud!" she whispered.
A sudden gust of black wind enveloped her, rendering her completely invisible. In the very next second, she materialized directly above the beast, her dual daggers flashing out to leave deep, bleeding gashes across its back.
As the monster shrieked in agony and attempted to retreat, Bobby lined up his shot from a distance. His left eye flared with a brilliant purple light—The Eagle's Domain. In Bobby's vision, the entire world slowed down to a crawl.
BANG!
A solitary bullet erupted from his sniper rifle. Instead of flying straight, the bullet caught the wind currents swirling inside the cave, curving unnaturally through the air before drilling right into the monster's skull. The Shadow Stalker instantaneously turned to ash, scattering into the wind.
"Flawless coordination," Kai remarked, sheathing his sword. "Mission accomplished. Let's head back to the Academy and report."
Act IV: The Deadly Ambush & Clashing with the Horde
Just as the team began to let their guard down, Roose suddenly screamed out. The hands of his silver pocket watch were spinning erratically like a compass caught in a magnetic storm. His positional magic was picking up a catastrophic distortion in the surrounding space.
"Wait... something is horribly wrong!" Roose's voice turned pale with terror. "The Space Gate's energy... it's overloading!"
CRACK!
Without warning, the purple vortex violently ruptured, expanding to twice its original size. From the absolute darkness of the cave and the dense woods outside, hundreds of glowing red eyes began to ignite. One... five... ten... twenty... they were countless!
Before the team could even process the threat, a massive horde of obsidian Shadow Stalkers poured out of the portal. Within seconds, the only exit out of the cavern was entirely cut off.
"Form a defensive circle! Don't let them break our formation!" Kai roared, his blade instantly crackling alive with volatile, electric-blue lightning.
Five monsters leaped simultaneously at Rick. Gritting his teeth, Rick channeled every ounce of his energy to lock his shield into the stone floor. The beasts' razor-sharp claws raked savagely against the metal shield, but Rick's new magical reinforcement absorbed the brunt of the kinetic shock. "Kai! I can't hold them off forever! There are too many of them!" Rick yelled, sweat pouring down his face.
Kai blurred into motion, throwing himself into the thick of the horde with godlike speed. Every slash of his lightning-clad sword sent blue sparks flying, reducing monsters to dust instantly. But the nightmare was endless—for every single beast he cut down, two more crawled out of the flashing portal.
From the rear, Bobby fired continuously. His purple magical bullets tracked and pierced the skulls of the beasts with absolute precision, but the sheer, blinding speed of the horde forced him to constantly swap positions to avoid getting mauled.
Maria and Roose executed a seamless tag-team combination. Maria used her shadow form to disorient and blind the oncoming beasts, while Roose triggered his positional magic to forcefully swap the coordinates of the monsters, causing them to crash into one another.
Yet, despite their coordination, their energy levels were depleting rapidly. The cavern walls trembled under the weight of the monsters' deafening screeches. This was no longer a routine trial. It had transformed into a brutal, bloody battle for survival.
Act V: Military Intelligence & The Backup Squad
Meanwhile, inside the Main Control Room of the Military Academy, a sudden red alert began to flash violently. On the main monitors, the live bio-signals and energy levels of Team Kai were dropping into the danger zone.
"What is happening out there? Why is the Space Gate's energy reading spiking like a volcano?!" the officer on duty shouted in panic.
The heavy steel doors of the control room were kicked open, and the Head Officer stepped inside, his expression dark with immense worry and fury. "I told you fools to keep a constant eye on that specific Space Gate! Team Kai has walked straight into a trap!"
"Sir, due to severe magnetic interference in that sector, all communications are completely dead! We cannot establish a link!" a technician stammered in fear. "But the scanners indicate... they are completely surrounded by hundreds of Shadow Stalkers!"
The Head Officer slammed his fist onto the tactical table. "We don't have a single second to waste. Team Kai is the most talented squad our Academy has produced in years. We cannot lose them! Deploy the Elite Backup Squad immediately!"
The Head Officer's booming, authoritative voice echoed across the base's intercom:
"Captain Jane! Take your elite squad and fly to Sector 4 of the Monster Forest right now. Team Kai is caught in a deadly ambush. You must extract them alive at all costs. Move out, now!"
Armed with heavy military weaponry, the elite backup squad boarded high-speed stealth choppers, roaring into the stormy skies toward the forest. However, the atmospheric turbulence over the canopy was severe—it would take them critical minutes to arrive.
Back inside the collapsing cavern, Team Kai was fighting with the very last drops of their blood. The electric-blue lightning on Kai's sword was beginning to sputter and fade. Hairline fractures were rippling across Rick's silver shield once more.
"They're coming... Roose, can you feel it?!" Rick gasped, his arms shaking from the pressure.
"Yeah! The military has sent a backup squad! I can feel the vibrations of the choppers in the upper airspace!" Roose shouted, using his spatial magic to detect the incoming forces.
"Then we hold this ground until they get here!" Kai roared, gathering the final remnants of his strength into the edge of his blade as he charged headfirst back into the terrifying sea of red eyes. "Team Kai! Fight until your very last breath!"
