Chapter 29 - Ch 29: Lucky Charm

"What we do?" The girl posed a simple question to David as they walked the crowded streets of the Southern Capital.

Most of the people wore simple clothes as they went on their ways, followed by their slaves who happened to be quite cheaply dressed. David wouldn't call their dresses better than the rags he himself was wearing - it was just that bad.

Among the murmurs of the crowd, peddlers had made ground for themselves at the roadside as they hawked their products and urged people to buy them.

"Oh come here, children! Here, take this lucky charm. It can bring so much luck to you that you can even free yourself from that mark of slavery." A man with a green hat on his head shouted as David passed by him.

Hearing the peddler's lucrative words, the girl stopped as she turned to look at the small stall.

"You telling truth?" She asked, a little sceptical. Seeing the look in her eyes, the shopkeeper assured her.

"Don't worry, girl. My green hat never lies and so don't I." The man waved his arms around, as if proudly declaring something.

David stared weirdly at the man sitting on a piece of sack. Was there some other significance of a "green hat" in the Windsor Kingdom?

Or...was it the same from what he knew back on Earth?

"Man, that incident must have really done a number on his mental health." In a rather sorrowful tone a passerby whispered as he directed his gaze at the peddler.

'Ahh I see...so he is just coping up with his betrayed love.' David couldn't help but become a bit remorseful at the man's condition.

There was a reason why he never seeked love while on Earth. Call it his insecured ass, but the more he saw how people cheated on each other, the more his faith on a concept called "true love" faded away.

Even though he did see some wholesome couples from time to time, his pessimism won over his optimistic side. Just as it had always been.

And thus, he strictly avoided any relationship.

'Its not like I don't want love; it's just that I fear...I am afraid when it comes to such stuffs. But guess I shall never know...afterall this world isn't exactly the type where I would even consider companionship.'

Shaking away his depressing thoughts, David waved at the nameless girl.

"Let's go. We need to find somewhere to rest for the night."

"B-but the charm....not buy it?" The girl looked at him pleadingly, making him sure she was rather convinced that the item the peddler had been selling was genuine.

David almost laughed at such an absurdity.

In a cheerful voice, he asked, "Want to see something interesting?" as he went done on his knees and picked up the item the peddler had been insisting as a "lucky charm".

'Woah...this is made of moulded and solidified mud.' He smirked slightly as he felt the texture of the so called charm.

Then from the roadside, he dug up a bit of soil and handed it to the nameless girl, who stared at it in confusion.

"What I do?"

To which, David glanced at the peddler as he replied.

"Oh, I was simply giving you your lucky charm."

The peddler appeared to panic as he rapidly shook his head. "No, the charm isn't made of plain soil. It has been specially picked up from the Heavenly Land of Blessings!"

The man's voice echoed in the sudden stillness around them. Curious, David glanced around him.

Everyone had halted in their path as they all looked at the peddler with sudden anger. One of them stepped forward, rotating his wrist and glaring at the peddler who was moving backwards seeing the crowd gather around his little shop.

"I can understand that you weren't well for over few months. Your wife cheated on you....we understand. You suddenly started selling weird things and EVEN wore a green hat...we understand. But how dare you sell your puny, stained items under the name of Light of the Blessings?!"

David crouched downwards as a wild swing passed above his head and struck the panicked peddler's lower jaw.

More people came near and neither of them looked to be following the path of non violence. Quickly crawling out of the mass of the angry mob, David yanked away the nameless girl from the chaotic place.

"Why they beating him?" The girl asked him in raspy breaths once they were out of danger.

"I have no idea. They got angry the moment he muttered that Heavenly name...maybe it's something sacred for them." David contemplated.

It was almost night and the streets were getting darker. Few dim, flickering lights reduced the darkness of the night. It didn't quite light up the streets but to David and the nameless girl, who had been surviving in the forest for the last so many years in pitch darkness, this was no problem.

They walked in the empty streets and narrow alleys, trying to find somewhere for shelter.

David's eyes took in the faint fluorescent lights coming from the oil lamps from inside the wooden houses, which were mostly one storeyed.

'So electricity is there...but nothing powerful or organised to transmit it to all the households...hmm.' As someone who had seen humanity's incredible progress in the 21st century, watching this world felt as if he was witnessing the era of Industrial Revolution but with prehistoric elements.

It was bizzare but so was the presence of magic and supernatural elements.

"Umm..." The nameless girl who had been walking with him made a hesitating whisper as she poked at his shoulders.

"What is it?" David asked, still looking around him cautiously.

"Can you...teach me?"

David's eyebrows rose as he glanced sideways, although his raised brows weren't visible in the darkness.

Generally it was the girl who always helped him. So it was surprising to him that she had asked his help. "In what?"

"English. I speak like you." Her index finger jabbed at his neck.

David grimaced, caressing his neck. "You are too strong. Don't carelessly poke me."

She giggled seeing his reaction. David sighed as he answered her. "Of course, I shall help you learn the language. Don't hesitate to ask me if you want some help. Afterall we are on our own here...nobody else is going to come help us if we get into some serious trouble."
