Outside, Chibuzor stood beside his car with Olaedo, watching the ambulance move off. As the siren faded into the distance, he turned to her and immediately caught the worried look in her eyes. It made something in his chest tighten.
"She's in good hands," he said gently, opening the car door for her.
Olaedo hesitated, her fingers tightening around the strap of her bag before she finally nodded. "I know. It's just… hard," she whispered, her voice thin with worry.
Chibuzor offered a small smile, quiet, steady, the best he could manage. "It'll be okay. Come on, let's go."
They began to follow the ambulance, its sirens silent but its presence loud enough to sit on both their chests. The early morning air was cool, but the tension in the car felt warm and suffocating.
Classical music played softly through the speakers, a calm melody drifting out through the cracked windows. It should've settled the mood. It didn't.
