"So when you said you can't sing but you try, what did you really mean?" I asked, shifting the topic smoothly. "You get that you can't really force voices, especially in singing, right?" I added, keeping my tone even as I looked toward him.
"As long as I'm following the right rhythm and beats, others are unnecessary," he replied without hesitation. His voice carried evenly.
He didn't linger on the previous topic, he answered directly what I had asked him without insisting.
Suddenly, I noticed differences between him and Xin that were easy to observe even without intention. They appeared simply in the way he responded.
The fact that he didn't insist on something I clearly did not want to discuss stood in sharp contrast to Xin, who would press on when he wanted to know something or when he felt he needed to.
